Unit 2 Section Ⅰ Warming Up & Reading
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
People need to relax and enjoy themselves. One way they can have a good time is to watch a baseball game or another sports event. Even thousands of years ago, groups of people gathered to watch skilled athletes.
Over 2,000 years ago in Greece, certain days in the year were festival days. These were holidays when people stopped work and enjoyed themselves. They liked to watch athletes take part in races and other games of skill.
The most important festival was held every four years at the town of Olympia. It was held in honour of the Greek god Zeus. For five days, athletes from all parts of the Greek world took part in the Olympic Games. At the Olympic Games, people could watch them box, run, jump and so on. There was a relay race between two teams of men in which a lighted torch (火炬) was passed from runner to runner. The Olympic Games were thought to be so important that cities which were at war with one another had to stop fighting. People were allowed to travel to the games freely. Thousands of people came to Olympia from cities in Greece and from its colonies (殖民地) in Africa, Asia and Italy. They met as friends to cheer their favourite athletes and to enjoy themselves.

I love to read before I go to sleep. It usually makes me feel calm. But a big part of this depends on what I read. I love to read Oor Wullie and The Broons. Very often I'm smiling before I go to sleep.
I decide to write about this in a blog because I find that so many of us go to sleep with stress. Before we go to sleep, we may run over the day in our minds, and worry about tomorrow. We also may watch the news on TV, read the news on our smart phones or tablets, or even answer work emails. But the news is rarely proclaiming (宣告) all the good that's happening in the world and work emails make us feel that we're still at work. All these things may leave us a stressful sleep.
Oor Wullie and The Broons are not the only things I ever read at night. I sometimes read novels but, with the odd exception, I mostly avoid anything that is too mentally taxing or stimulating late at night unless it's something that inspires me or is clearly helpful in my life.
And even if I do read something mentally stimulating, when I feel myself getting tired I lay that book down and pick up a trusty old Oor Wullie or The Broons for the last 10 or 15 minutes. Doing this makes my mind quiet and helps ensure I get a peaceful night's sleep. Reading about Wullie or Maw and Paw Broon is like a comfort blanket for me.
I'd suggest you find light-hearted reading as a comfort blanket at bedtime, especially if you find yourself stressed or depressed a lot of the time, or if you find difficulty winding at the end of a day. It is the thing that can gently turn your attention towards lightness and ease.
If your material makes you laugh, then you may feel even better. Several studies show that laughter boosts happy chemicals in the brain, it strengthens the immune system, it's good for the heart, and it is most definitely good for mental health. It even helps us improve our relationships.
And if you do happen to pick up a copy of Oor Wullie or The Broons, I hope you find it just as entertaining as I do.

You've decided your child is spoiled, and you want to do something about it. Is it too late? Not necessarily. Here are four tips from an expert for getting your child to behave well.
1 You've spoiled your child by giving him or her too much for too little. You can correct this by helping your child to learn to work harder for rewards and to understand that not all good behavior is rewarded. 2 For example, at first, insist that your daughter put a few toys away before she gets a snack, and gradually increase the amount of work required for each reward.
Don't overreact(反应过度) to crying. When children don't get what they want, their natural behavior is to cry. If you react every time your child cries, you may be denying(拒绝给予) him or her an important chance to learn something. 3
Prepare for a fight. At the beginning, children's demands will increase when they find out parents are not going to give them the new toys they want. When it happens, be careful not to give in just because the child shouts. 4
Stick with the program. Your child will probably be upset when you begin making changes. 5 It means the requirements are getting stricter and that your child is adjusting(适应).Remember:give it time, and don't give up.
A.Cut down on rewards.
B.That's not necessarily a bad thing.
C.Start out making changes slowly.
D.Rather, wait until the child calms down.
E.Don't try to reason with him or her about the situation.
F.There is little doubt that things will get worse before they get better.
G.As a parent, you need to know when to comfort a child and when to simply walk away.

A fresh and gentle wind on your face, soft sand under your feet and blue waters as far as the eye can see. Is there any other Olympic sport that is played in such pleasant conditions as beach volleyball?
“I've gone to a lot of beautiful places, and met a lot of beautiful people. That wouldn't have happened if I had been playing another sport,” said Randy Stoklos, America's most famous beach volleyball player.
The sport began as a four-a-side game on beaches in Southern California in the 1920s. The first recorded two-man game took place there in 1930, and the first tournament was held in Los Angeles 18 years later. The winners were awarded a case of Pepsi. In the 1950s, women started playing and the sport soon spread to Europe and South America. Yet at that time, beach volleyball was more an entertainment show than a sport, with beauty contests included. The Association of Volleyball Professionals was founded in 1983 and beach volleyball developed into a fast, athletic sport. Its world-wide popularity won beach volleyball a place at the 1996 Olympics in Atalanta, where 24 male teams and 16 female teams took part. At present, the US and Brazil are the best in the world at beach volleyball.
The game came to China in the early 1990s and there have been national tournaments since 1994. It became an official event at the Eighth National Games in 1997. China's You Wenhui and Wang Lu finished ninth in the women's beach volleyball world championships in Brazil.

It's good to make mistakes, and here is why.
First of all, mistakes are a clear sign that we are trying new things. It's always good to try new things because when we are trying new things, we are growing. If we never try anything new, how can we improve? The simple answer is, “We can't”.
Another good thing about mistakes is that when we are making them, we are learning. Consider this—Edison failed 10,000 times before he perfected the light bulb. When asked how it felt to fail that many times, he said that he had learned 10,000 things that didn't work.
When we make a mistake, we are much closer to success. Because every time we make a mistake, we eliminate one of the things that keep us from success.
But all this doesn't mean that we should go through life without considering the consequences of a mistake. Instead, when we try something new, we have to be willing to set some reasonable limits so that in the event that it doesn't work out the way we want it to, we will be in a position to try again. We all have limited resources—in the form of time and money—so we shouldn't blow them all on one approach to a problem. It's best that we realize it probably won't be perfect for the first time and allocate these resources appropriately so we can learn, make corrections, and try again. Only by accepting and using our mistakes in this way can we make significant advances in our lives.
There is an old saying that goes, “If you're not making mistakes, you're not trying hard enough”.So go forth and make mistakes.
