Unit 5 Section I Warming Up & Reading
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
The first people in Canada crossed the Bering Strait from Asia. In the north the Inuit lived by hunting seals, walruses (海象) and whales. They also hunted caribou (北美驯鹿). On the west coast people hunted deer, bear and beaver (河狸). They also fished. On the plains people lived by hunting buffalo. In the east people grew crops of beans, squash (南瓜), maize (玉米) and sunflower seeds.
The first Europeans to reach Canada were the Vikings. In 986 a Viking called Bjarni Herjolfsson was blown off course by a storm and he spotted a new land. However he sailed away without landing. In 1001 a man named Leif Eriksson landed in the new land, which he named Vinland (it was part of Canada). However Eriksson did not stay permanently. Later the Vikings did establish a colony (殖民地) in North America but they abandoned it because of conflict with the natives.
However after the Vikings Canada was forgotten until the end of the 15th century. In 1497 the English king Henry Ⅶ sent an Italian named John Cabot on an expedition across the Atlantic to Newfoundland. Cabot discovered rich fishing waters off the coast of Canada.
Then in 1534 and in 1535~1536 a Frenchman named Jacques Cartier (1491~1557) sailed on two expeditions to Canada. On 10 August 1535 (St Lawrence's Day) he sailed into the St Lawrence River, which he named after the saint.
However no permanent European settlements were made in Canada until the early 17th century. In 1603 a Frenchman named Samuel de Champlain (1567~1635) sailed up the St Lawrence River. In 1604 he founded Port Royal in Acadia (Nova Scotia). In 1608 Samuel de Champlain founded Quebec. (The name Quebec is believed to be an Algonquin word meaning a narrow part of a river). In 1642 the French founded Montreal. The new colony in Canada was called New France. By 1685 the population of New France was about 10,000. By 1740 it was 48,000.

I picked up my two best friends and we were off on a road trip. I had just returned to America from a year abroad in China. So, naturally I wanted to take a trip to Canada.
Montreal, the second largest city in Canada, is a four-hour drive from my home in New Hampshire. We felt a thrill as we crossed the border into Canada. It was the first time I had ever driven across an international border. We turned on the radio to try and find some Canadian stations.
After dropping off our bags at our hotel, we were immediately walking down the famous St Catherine's Street. While we walked, two things surprised us: how cold it was and how well everyone dressed. The streets of Montreal are like a fashion show. Both men and women look like they stepped out of the pages of a magazine.
All of that fashion has to keep them warm since Montreal is so cold. Last year it broke the record for the most snowfall in North America. To hide from the cold we went into a small diner because we wanted to order Poutine, a very popular snack in Montreal. It is French fries covered in cheese and brown gravy (肉汁). It is delicious.
However, we had a hard time ordering the dish since the official language of Montreal is French. It is actually the fifth largest French-speaking city in the world. But since the rest of Canada speak English, plenty of people were there to help.
We spent the rest of the weekend going to many historical churches and monuments in Montreal. But at night we'd head to the very modern dance clubs and bars. Montreal is a city that sits between the past and the future and the traveller can choose whichever direction he wants to go.

Ⅰ.七选五
Some people just know how to start a conversation with anyone, in any place. If you're not one of these lucky types, don't worry. 1
Remark on the surroundings or occasions. If you're at a party, for example, you could comment on the food or the music in a positive way like this: “I love this song.” or “The food is great.”
2 For example, “How is the wine?” or “Who do you know here?”Most people enjoy talking about themselves so asking a question is a good way to get a conversation started.
3 For example, “I really like your purse. Can I ask where you got it?” or “You're really doing well in this. Can you show me how to do it?”
Remark on anything you have in common. People would like your saying “My daughter went to that school, too. How does your son like it?”
4 Don't say something that obviously causes offence and avoid heavy subjects such as politics or religion. Stick to light subjects like the weather, surroundings, and anything you have in common such as movies or sports teams.
Listen effectively. 5 You can't concentrate on what someone's saying if you're thinking about what you're going to say next. The key to effective communication is to focus fully on the speaker and show interest in what's being said. Nod occasionally, smile at the person, and encourage the speaker to continue with “yes” or “uh huh”.
A.Choose subjects you're interested in.
B.Use a praise to create a good atmosphere.
C.Keep the conversation going with small talk.
D.It is not the same as waiting for your turn to talk.
E.Ask specific questions that are related to the drinks.
F.Ask a question that requires more than just a yes or no answer.
G.Here are some ways to have a conversation with someone new.

5.解析:选D 本段内容强调倾听的重要性,根据本空后一句表达“当你在思考接下来要说什么的时候,你就不会专心听别人讲话”,言外之意,我们不要等着机会去说话,而要专心去听,故选D项。

Among the international students in Canada who are struggling to find a job there after graduation, some eventually make it with relative ease. They're the ones who've already built up much internship(实习) experience while still attending university,as their majors offer a co-operative program.
Co-op programs, a feature (特色) of Canadian university programs, allow academic studies to be combined with work experience.During school years, students get to network with employers, gain internship experience in relevant fields, and earn academic credits that count toward their degree or diploma.
Co-op programs are available in most comprehensive universities, like the University of Waterloo, Wilfrid Laurier University and York University. These programs are not only open to students majoring in business but also to many science and art majors.Statistics show that nearly 30 percent of recent foreign applicants have chosen majors that also subscribe to the Co-op program.“It's easy to understand,” said a senior education counselor. He noted that working opportunities are provided by employers that build bridges with the university and most of them are well-known companies or local government organizations. Moreover, the average salary for interns is as high as C$30,000 to C$40,000 a year.
Students can choose to work during vacations or term-time freely. The required duration of the internship for undergraduates ranges from eight to twelve months, or four to six months for graduate students.“The programs also benefit those students who want to apply for immigration,” added the counselor.“That's because the policies of many provinces in Canada require a certain length of work experience of the applicants.”

In our everyday lives we meet situations in which we take many things for granted. We only treasure things when they are gone. This is a sad truth of human nature. One day, I found myself as a witness to a similar situation.
One evening, I left work and boarded the train. After entering, I noticed something unusual. The center of the car had a few empty seats while both ends were crowded with people standing.I didn't pay much attention and sat down on one of the empty seats.I sensed a funny smell. It wasn't long before I noticed a homeless person sleeping on three seats in front of me.He was bleeding from his nose. Why wasn't anyone helping him?
His clothes were torn and he was giving off a strange smell.Along with the smell, his eyes were dull, watery, and red.Occasionally he scratched himself and people looked at him as if he had committed a crime. As the train stopped at stations and more people came in they covered their noses and faced away from him.All the seats around him were empty.
Suddenly, he began to swear at the people around him.A plain-clothes police officer who looked like a construction worker took out his certificate and showed it to the homeless man.The officer, not wanting to touch the homeless man, told him his rights and directed him to exit the train. As the officer walked the man out of the train, the homeless man turned around and said “MY HOME!” and started crying.
A man doesn't value things until they are gone.If he didn't have a home, at least he had freedom. Now he has neither. No one wants to help someone who won't help himself.
