While famous foreign architects are invited to lead the designs of landmark buildings in China such as the new CCTV tower and the National Center for the Performing Arts, many excellent Chinese architects are making great efforts to take the center stage.
Their efforts have been proven fruitful.Wang Shu,a 49-year-old Chinese architect, won the 2012 Prizker Architecture Prize—which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture—on February 28.He is the first Chinese citizen to win this award.
Wang serves as head of the Architecture Department at the China Academy of Art (CAA).His office is located at the Xiangshan campus (校园) of the university in Hangzhou,Zhejiang Province. Many buildings on the campus are his original creations.
The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities. Many visitors were amazed by the complex architectural space and abundant building types. The curves (曲线)of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.
Wang collected more than 7 million abandoned bricks of different ages.He asked the workers to use traditional techniques to make the bricks into walls, roofs and corridors. This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素).
Wang's works show a deep understanding of modern architecture and a good knowledge of traditions.Through such a balance,he had created a new type of Chinese architecture, said Tadao Ando, the winner of the 1995 Pritzker Prize.
Wang believes traditions should not be sealed in glass boxes at museums.“That is only evidence that traditions once existed,”he said.
“Many Chinese people have a misunderstanding of traditions. They think tradition means old things from the past.In fact, tradition also refers to the things that have been developing and that are still being created,”he said.
“Today, many Chinese people are learning Western styles and theories rather than focusing on Chinese traditions. Many people tend to talk about traditions without knowing what they really are,”said Wang.
The study of traditions should be combined with practice.Otherwise, the recreation of traditions would be artificial and empty,he said.
5.Wang's winning of the prize means that Chinese architects are ________.
A.following the latest world trend
B.getting international recognition
C.working harder than ever before
D.relying on foreign architects
根据第二段中的“Wang Shu,a 49-year-old Chinese architect,won the 2012 Pritzker Architecture Prize—which is often referred to as the Nobel Prize in architecture—on February 28.”
6.What impressed visitors to the CAA Xiangshan campus most?
A.Its hilly environment.
B.Its large size.
C.Its unique style.
D.Its diverse functions.
根据第四段中的“The style of the campus is quite different from that of most Chinese universities.”和“The curves(曲线)of the buildings perfectly match the rise and fall of hills, forming a unique view.” A项“Its hilly environment.”(丘陵环境)曲解文意;B项和D项属无中生有。
7.What made Wang's architectural design a success?
A.The mixture of different shapes.
B.The balance of East and West.
C.The use of popular techniques.
D.The harmony of old and new.
根据第五段中的“This creation attracted a lot of attention thanks to its mixture of modern and traditional Chinese elements(元素).”
8.What should we do about Chinese traditions according to Wang?
A.Spread them to the world.
B.Preserve them at museums.
C.Teach them in universities.
D.Recreate them in practice.

Five simple things that are actually complex
The proof for“1+1=2”is over 300 pages long.
__1__ In the early 20th century,Bertrand Russell wanted to prove that mathematics worked,so he decided to start with the simplest concept and prove 1+1=2.However,it took the mathematician and philosopher 372 pages of complex sums.
Defining the word “the” is really difficult.
The word “the”is one of the most common words in English.__2__ For example, why do we say,“I have the flu”,but not “I have the headache”?In the Oxford English Dictionary, there are almost two dozen different ways the word can be used in a sentence correctly.
Yawning.
Some people say we yawn to keep us alert by taking in oxygen. However, various experiments have shown that yawning actually cools down the brain.__3__ As for why yawning is contagious(感染性的),no one knows that either.
Left and right have been confusing philosophers for years.
Would you explain the concept of left and right in terms of your relative position to a well-known landmark(地标性建筑)?__4__ It's a question that has been puzzling philosophers for years because, without a point of reference,it's difficult to define what left and right actually are.
__5__
You'd think that the reason we enjoy things is because it feels good in some way,but it's only half the story. There's a famous experiment where wine experts were fooled into thinking a cheap bottle of wine was an outstanding one just by switching the labels.Their enjoyment of the product wasn't based on appreciation of wine—it was based on the fact that they were told it was good wine.
A.What you feel may not be the truth.
B.We enjoy things for reasons other than enjoyment.
C.But what if you were talking to one who couldn't see?
D.We all know that one plus one equals two,but do you know why?
E.In fact, there is no universally agreed theory for why we actually yawn.
F.Maybe you'd refer to the move of the Earth or something comparably huge.
G.Most of us have probably never stopped to think about how strange a word it actually is.

5.解析:选B 根据本段列举的例子及最后一句“Their enjoyment of the product wasn't based on appreciation of wine—it was based on the fact that they were told it was good wine.”

She is widely seen as proof that good looks can last forever. But,at over 500 years of age, time is catching up with the Mona Lisa.
The health of the famous picture, painted by Leonardo Da Vinci (莱昂纳多·达·芬奇) in 1505,is getting worse by the years, according to the Louvre Museum (卢浮宫博物馆) where it is housed.
“The thin, wooden panel on which the Mona Lisa is painted in oil has changed shape since experts checked it two years ago,” the museum said.Visitors have noticed the changes but repairing the world's most famous painting is not easy.Experts are not sure about the materials the Italian artist used and their current(现在的)chemical state.
Nearly 6 million people go to see the Mona Lisa every year, and many are attracted by the mystery of her smile.“It is very interesting that when you're not looking at her,she seems to be smiling, and then you look at her and she stops,”said Professor Margaret Livingstone of Harvard University.“It's because direct vision(视觉)is excellent at picking up details, but less suited to look at shadows.Da Vinci painted the smile in shadows.”
However, the actual history of the Mona Lisa is just as mysterious as the smile.Da Vinci himself loved it so much that he always carried it with him, until it was eventually sold to France's King Francis I in 1519.
In 1911,the painting was stolen from the Louvre by a former employee, who took it out of the museum hidden under his coat.He said he planned to return it to Italy. The painting was sent back to France two years later.
During World War II,French hid the painting in small towns to keep it out of the hands of German forces.
Like many old ladies, the Mona Lisa has some interesting stories to tell.

A water lily painting,Water Lily Pond, by Claude Monet, the French impressionist artist, was sold for more than $80 million on Tuesday, breaking the auction (拍卖) record for himself.Water Lily Pond was part of a four-work collection of water lily paintings that Monet put up for sale during his lifetime.
The four paintings of Monet's water lily garden were signed and dated by the artist in 1919.One of the other paintings is at the Metropolitan Museum of Art in New York, while another was sold at auction in 1992 for $12.1 million and is in a private collection now.The final painting in the series was cut into two before World War Ⅱ.
“After a fierce bidding battle between a number of buyers in the room and on the telephone, the painting finally was sold to a collector for $80.4 million, setting a new world record price for the artist at auction,” said Olivier Camu, a scholar of impressionist art.
The last record for a Monet work was set in May when Le Pont du Chemin de fer à Argenteuil was sold for $41.4 million.
The painting sold on Tuesday was bought at a 1971 New York auction for $320,000.It has not been exhibited since then.
Monet's later works had unique characteristics, especially Les Grandes Décorations, another good example, which was bedded in Musee de I'Orangerie in Paris five months after Monet's death in 1926.
Monet created his water lily garden in Giverny,France. He selected different water lilies in an effort to get as many different colored flowers as possible, specially creating the garden as a base for his paintings.
