A
William Butler Yeats,a most famous Irish writer,was born in Dublin on June 13,1865.His childhood lacked the harmony(和睦) that was typical of a happy family.Later,Yeats shocked his family by saying that he remembered “little of childhood but its pain”.In fact,he inherited (继承) excellent taste in art from his family—both his father and his brother were painters.But he finally settled on literature,particularly drama(戏剧) and poetry.
Yeats had strong faith in the coming of new artistic movements.He set himself the fresh task in founding an Irish national theatre in the late 1890s.His early theatrical experiments,however,were not received favorably at the beginning.He didn't lose heart,and finally enjoyed success in his poetical drama.
Compared with his dramatic works,Yeats's poems attract much admiring notice.The subject matter includes love,nature,history,time and aging.Though Yeats generally relied on very traditional forms,he brought modern sensibility to them.As his literary life progressed,his poetry grew finer and richer,which led him to worldwide recognition.
He had not enjoyed a major public lift since winning the Nobel Prize in 1923.Yet ,he continued writing almost to the end of his life.Had Yeats stopped writing at age 40,he would probably now be valued as a minor poet,for there is no other example in literary history of a poet who produces his greatest works between the ages of 50 and 75.After Yeats's death in 1939,W.H.Auden wrote,among others,the following lines:
Earth,receive an honoured guest:
William Yeats is laid to rest.
Let the Irish vessel(船) lie
Emptied of its poetry.

Limericks (五行打油诗) are usually witty or humorous, and have five lines: the first two rhyme, the two in the middle rhyme,and the last line rhymes with the first two lines.Here is how to write a limerick.
Pick what you would like your limerick to be about.It could be about mice,a tree,a person,or whatever.
________Don't end it with something you can't rhyme—like “orange”.Start it like “There once was a man who ate limes(酸橙)” or something like that.
Your next line has to rhyme with the first line.If you use “There once was a man who ate limes”, your second line could be like “He ate them all the time” or “And sampled various wines”.Your limerick would now be like There once was a man who ate limes/And sampled various wines.
The third and fourth lines have to be related to the first part of your limerick,but are not with the same rhyme.They could be like,He wouldn't touch a tomato/It tasted too much like potatoes or something along those lines.
The fifth line must rhyme with the first two lines.Your last line could be like “And potatoes, you know,do not shine” or something like that.
Your entire limerick would be kind of like this: There once was a man who ate limes/And sampled various wines/He wouldn't touch a tomato/It tasted too much like potatoes/And potatoes,you know,do not shine.
If you don't like your limerick,you can always go back and change it.It's not permanent.

HOW TO READ A POEM
There's really only one reason why poetry has gotten a reputation for being so “difficult”:It demands your full attention.__1__
Follow Your Ears. It's okay to ask “What does it mean?” when you are reading a poem. But it's even better to ask “How does it sound?” __2__ Even if you can't understand a single thing about a poem's “subject” or “theme”, you can always say something—anything—about the sound of the words.
__3__ OK, we're not saying you have to shout it from the rooftops. If you're embarrassed and want to lock yourself in the attic (阁楼) and read the poem in the quietest whisper,go ahead. But reading aloud is really an effective way to understand a poem, because reading even part of it aloud can totally change your perspective on how it works.
Read in Different Places.Just like music, the experience of poetry changes depending on your mood and the environment. Read in as many different places as possible: at the beach, on a mountain, in the subway. __4__
Think Like a Poet. Here's a fun exercise. Go through the poem one line at a time, covering up the next line with your hand so you can't see it. Put yourself in the poet's shoes: __5__If you start to think like this, you'll be able to appreciate all the different choices that go into making a poem.

A
No poem should ever be discussed or analyzed, until it has been read aloud by someone, teacher or student. Better still, perhaps, is the practice of reading it twice, once at the beginning of the discussion and once at the end. All discussions of poetry are, in fact, preparations for reading it aloud, and the reading of the poem is, finally, the most telling “interpretation” of it, suggesting tone, rhythm, and meaning all at once. Hearing a poet read the work in his or her own voice, on records or on films, is obviously a special reward. But even those aids to teaching cannot replace the student and the teacher reading it or, best of all, reciting it.
I have come to think, in fact, that time spent reading a poem aloud is much more important than analyzing it, if there isn't time for both. I think one of our goals as teachers of English is to have students love poetry. Poetry is a criticism of life, and a heightening (提升) of life. It is an approach to the truth of feeling, and it can save your life.
I am not saying that every English teacher must teach poetry. Those who don't like it should not be forced to put that dislike on anyone else. But those who do teach poetry must keep in mind a few things about its essential nature, about its sound as well as its sense, and they must make room in the classroom for hearing poetry as well as thinking about it.
