GENERAL OBJECTIVES
1、本单元在本册教材中的地位和作用:本单元通过由“讨论.旅游”引起的故事、地理描述以及任务要求，学生可以了解世界地理知识，学习各大洲、大洋、沙漠、河流等的名称，描述主要地区的一些基本特征，同时也复习、掌握打电话的交际用语。
2、本课在本单元中的地位和作用:本课向学生介绍世界地理知识，学习各大洲、大洋、沙漠、河流等的名称，描述一些基本地理特征，所以本课在本单元占有很重要的位置。

KEY STEPS
Step1?Ask the class what they know about the world, including the continents, population, oceans, deserts, islands and rivers by showing a map of the world. The class can answer in English or Chinese .then ask how many continents the world has ? Seven ! Can you point to them? Ask the volunteers to answer.
Step2?Come to “Think About It”. 1. Which part of the world do you live in? 2. What do you know about the place where you live ? 3. How many people are there in the world ?
Step3?Let the students listen to the tape with the questions of Lesson50: 1. How many oceans or continents are there in the world? 2. How many people are there in the world? 3. Where do all the people live? 4. How big are the world’s oceans? 5. How many deserts does the world have? 6. What’s the world’s biggest island? 7. What’s the world’s longest river? Then check the answers by asking the volunteers to answer.
Step4?Listen to the tape again , and follow to read loudly.
Step5?Explain the language notes with some examples. For examples:
1. increase by “增加了” The rate of inflation has increased by 2%. 通货膨胀率以增长了 2%.
increase to “增加到” The population has increased to1.8 million now. 人口现在已增加到 180 万。
2. be good for “对……有好处 Sunshine is good for your plants. 你的花草要多晒太阳。

3. three-quarters 意为“四分之三”。 Quarter 是名词， 意思是“一刻钟， 四分之一”。 类似词还有 half,表示“二分之一”。
