B
A substitute teacher crunch has forced Chicago area school districts to raise sub pay, to use parents as subs and even to seek out teachers from moonlighting police and fire department ranks. The crunch also means good subs are getting harder to find, some say. “It’s not only a quantity problem but a quality problem,” said Barbara Radner, director of DePaul University’s Center for Urban Education, which serves as expert partner to 31 academically troubled Chicago public schools. “We’re getting to the bottom of the talent pool and it’s empty,” she said. And a bad sub, Radner explained, can move a class backward by confusing students.
Radner said Chicago’s sub shortage is at “crisis” levels and the worst she’s seen in 15 years, although city school officials say West Side schools seem to be affected the most. Using the Chicago system’ssubstitute teacher center is like engaging in “Russian roulette”, Radner said. “Every sixth sub you get could be a total blowup.” Increasingly, she said, principals in schools she works with say they can’t get subs, or the subs they get leave midday because they can’t handle the job. Chicago school officials are recruiting police officers and firefighters to sub in high-crime areas that some subs refuse to enter. A sub recruitment push is also planned on college campuses — among graduate and doctoral students who may find the part-time work attractive, Schools Chief Executive Officer Paul Vallas said.
Teachers often leave detailed lesson plans for subs if they know in advance they will be off, and keep “emergency plans” on file for unexpected absences, such as an illness. But Radner said emergency plans can amount to “a recipe for baby-sitter.” Carolyn Martin said her daughter’s last sub at Bolingbrook’s Tibbott Elementary in Valley View District 365 was so unpleasant that she may demand to sit in the classroom next time there’s a problem sub. “The last time they had a sub, the substitute teacher had to call the principal into the room,” Martin said, “This is a third-grade classroom, and the lady couldn’t even handle it”.
Demand for subs is high because of several factors, school officials say. For starters, those who hold sub certificate may not be using them because they have found better-paying jobs in today’s booming economy. “Six or seven years ago,” Schaumburg District 54 Associate Supt. Kenneth Cull said, “I used to have 30 real estate agents sign up for sub work because they had college degrees and business was slow. I don’t have that anymore.” Sub pools have been further consumed by several waves of early teacher retirements and increased student enrollments — both of which have meant more subs are being hired as full-time teachers.
58. What is troubling the Chicago school districts?
A. People in unrelated areas find jobs in school teaching.
B. Quality of regular and sub teachers needs improving.
C. Students suffer greatly from unprofessional teachers.
D. Chicago area is in bad need of qualified sub teachers.
59. From the second paragraph, we learn ________.
A. the sub crunches before were not as bad as the present ones
B. many principals quit their jobs as they can’ t handle the situation
C. police officers are sent to the high-crime areas to keep order
D. six out of ten substitute teachers come from college campuses
60. According to Radner, the emergency plans________.
A. are most effective in mending the situation
B. are detested by most parents
C. are resisted by most students
D. do not efficiently meet the situation
61. Which of the following is NOT a factor that leads to the shortage of qualified subs?
A. Many certified teachers quit their teaching positions for other professions.
B. Sound economic situation attracts many candidates from teaching positions.
C. There are more students admitted to schools than ever before.
D. Many teachers retire earlier from their positions than they should.

C
For famous photojournalist Sir Don McCullin, the landscape has changed since the days when dozens of printed pages were devoted to his photo stories, leading him to declare, “Photojournalism is dying.” According to Sir Don McCullin, newspapers and magazines are much more interested in the wealthy, the glamorous and celebrities. They don’t want suffering people in their newspapers. Photojournalism hasn’t lost its way but it’s been conveniently pushed aside. Shrinking editorial budgets, increasing competition and mistrust of the Press are just some of the factors impacting photojournalism. But the power of photography endures and technology is allowing photographers more creative freedom than ever before. The world is hungry for visual storytelling, but will photojournalism survive?
We spoke to photojournalists working in this industry about the state of affairs today, and asked their opinions about photojournalism in the digital age.
IlvyNjiokiktjien
“Assignments have changed, so people don’t need to go somewhere for months to work on one project. When Don McCullin’s pictures were making it into the newspaper, his images would be the news. Now if I take a picture at Nelson Mandela’s funeral, for instance, there are 300 other photographers there. There are so many images that you are never going to really shoot an iconic image. You’re not the only one there — there are your colleagues and there are people with cellphones. I don’t think a single image will ever lose its power. Single images, to me, are so strong — I can look at a single image and never forget it. But there are new ways of storytelling — with cellphones, with interactive online experiences and virtual reality. Therefore, it’s important to see what matches the story.”
Jér?meSessini
“I think now we are freer than before because of technology. Besides, we don’t care about the newspapers like people did before. We get free from the newspapers, so we are able to tell stories in the way we want to tell them. In my opinion, pictures can express emotions — I believe more in emotions than in rationality. I don’t want to tell people, ‘this is like this’, or ‘like that’. I want them to first feel something from the pictures, and then ask some questions. They will have to find the answers by themselves.”
Magnus Wennman
“When I started, press photography was a pretty old-school profession, but today it’s completely different. It’s not about the technique any more. It’s about telling stories, and you have endless opportunities to tell stories by means of pictures. If you are engaging in storytelling, I would say your future is very bright. Photojournalism is more democratic. As a matter of fact, nowadays we can see people shooting with their cellphones anywhere. Photojournalism is no longer the privilege of those working at newspapers. The new generation of photojournalists should work in a completely different way. As you see everywhere, visual storytelling is getting more and more important. If you’re good at that, you’re going to survive.”
Daniel Etter
“A lot of people have been declaring that photojournalism is dead and, somehow, it’s still around. It’s still alive, and it’s still kicking — maybe not quite as hard as in Don McCullin’s days, but it’s still important. It doesn’t have the impact it once had, and it will never have that impact again. I always believe photography plays a role, but if there are better ways of telling visual stories, I’m fine with that. The biggest problem we are running into now is how to make others believe us. Look at how really basic facts are in question nowadays. To make our work a reliable source of information is our biggest challenge. I haven’t figured out a way to make news more trustworthy — the only thing we can do is do good work. That means doing research and trying to represent events in a fair way.”
62. What does Ilvy want to say with the example of Nelson Mandela’s funeral?
A. Great news like this is always attractive.
B. Taking a satisfying picture is really difficult.
C. Too many people take up photojournalism.
D. Popularity of cellphones threatens photojournalism.
63. What idea do Sessini and Wennman share?
A. Good pictures are worth all the hard work.
B. It’s better to let the picture itself tell stories.
C. Technology is photographers’ greatest enemy.
D. Photojournalism will be the first to be kicked out.
64. What does the underlined sentence mean?
A. Photojournalism enjoys great popularity nowadays.
B. Photojournalism is really a promising career in the future.
C. Everyone can report news stories using photos taken by themselves.
D. Photojournalism has lost its appeal for those working at newspapers.
65. What can we learn about Etter?
A. His talent was once questioned.
B. He is optimistic about his future career.
C. He will resign from his job sooner or later.
D. He is seeking suitable ways to tell visual stories.

第二节 七选五阅读(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,从短文后的选项中选出可以填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Charisma
Are leaders born or made? Many leaders throughout history—such as Gandhi, Churchill, Napoleon, and Martin Luther King—seem to have a special quality that made them powerful and persuasive. We can identify that quality as charisma, but can we explain it?
Charisma means a natural ability to attract other people and make them admire you. It is a complex mixture of social and emotional (情感的) skills. 66 Richard Wiseman, a famous psychologist, points out that there are three key qualities of a charismatic person: they feel their own emotions strongly;they inspire strong emotions in other people; and they are unaffected by the influences of other charismatic people.
You needn’ t worry if you don’ t have these qualities. 67 Wiseman says that when you come upon someone who is charismatic, you can copy his or her body language and facial expressions without realizing it. This is called mirroring, and it works partly because people’ s behavior influences their emotions. 68 He proves his point by giving the example of smiling back at someone who smiled at you. Your smiling back suggests that you accept the goodwill from the other person and hope to give it back to him.
69 For example, if you stand up straight and raise your chest, you are more likely to feel confident and inspire others to feel confidence in you. Another expert says that the most charismatic people are usually good listeners. They give others the impression of being focused and modest.
Charisma plays a large part in success because it is linked to self-confidence. 70 One successful leadership coach points out that you need to come by your skills and techniques naturally, she warns—if the personality you project is not real, you may come across as insincere.
A. This type of physical presence can be used to great effect.
B. Today there is growing evidence that charisma can be learned.
C. Charismatic persons should be active and sensitive to their surroundings.
D. It needs to be recognized that charisma is more than just being positive.
E. It helps to make strong personal connections and communicate effectively with others.
F. But it is worth noting that charisma can’ t be a pretended ability although it can be learned.
G. He adds you’ re unaware of picking up others’ gestures, but you know it makes you feel good.

第七部分 写作(满分25分)
Jatin and his younger sister, Neha, lived with their parents in a poor neighborhood. Their mother was very sick and their father was struggling to find a job, and they had only a little money with which to buy food. As they had not paid the rent for several months, the landlord was breathing down their necks (盯着他们).
One day, Jatin took Neha’s shoes to a shoe repairman to be fixed, but he lost them on the way home. It wasn’t until he got home that he realized he had lost the shoes. He was afraid that his parents would be angry and disappointed, so he begged his sister to keep it secret. Neha agreed and the two decided to share Jatin’s running shoes. Neha’s school hours were in the morning, so she would wear them first. After school, she would rush back and give them to Jatin. He could then run to his school, which began in the afternoon. Although he ran as fast as he could, Jatin often arrived late and was warned by the school.
A long distance race was going to be held for the boys in the city. When Jatin learned that the third prize was a new pair of shoes, he decided to take part. He ran home excitedly and promised his sister that he would win her the new shoes.
The day of race arrived. Jatin had a strong start, but halfway through the race he began to get tired and his legs began to ache. Getting more and more exhausted he thought only of Neha and his promise to her. Dreaming of the new shoes he would win for his sister gave him strength, and he stayed right behind the two fastest runners, determined to finish third. Suddenly, as the finish line drew near, another runner collided(碰撞) with Jatin from behind and Jatin crashed to the ground.

M: Dolphins are cool, but sharks are way better. They are so fast in the water and they can grow to be some of the biggest fish in the world.

M: Hi, I’ve just checked in. Is food still being served?
W: I’m sorry sir, the restaurant is just closing. It is open from 6:00 p.m. to 10:00 p.m. However, room service is available until 11:00 p.m., so you have an hour to order.
Text 6
W: Good morning. I’m afraid we don’t have your favorite today. Our supplier didn’t deliver any.
M: What other types do you recommend?
W: Well, the lady sitting over there used to order the same Brazilian coffee you have. Then one day she tried Italian and she’s been having it every day since.
M: Hmm, I’ll try that then, but I don’t think I’ll be changing permanently. It’s my weekly treat after a tough morning at the office.
W: It’s good to try different things. I went to a French restaurant once and tried snails. I didn’t think I’d like them but they were great.
Text 7
M: What was the last thing you bought?
W: Let me think — was it a Superman toy for my dog? No, it was an ice cream maker.
M: Do you ever save money?
W: No. I’m always overdrawn at the bank.
M: Your mom and I have always taught you to manage your money wisely. Has none of that sunk in?
W: Live for today. That’s what I say. Who knows what will happen tomorrow?
M: We know — simply because we have lived longer. You should save up and use money wisely instead of wasting too much on clothes and things you don’t need.
W: Maybe you’re right…but the shopkeepers can be so persuasive.
M: Of course, it’s their job. It is your responsibility to look after your own interests.
Text 8
W: I really miss my mother’s roasted chicken.
M: Why don’t we go visit her?
W: I wish we could. It’s been five years since we went to Mexico City for Christmas.
M: Well, I have a surprise. I bought plane tickets for October 28th. We’ll be there for a week.
W: Really?
M: Yes, dear.
W: I can’t believe it! We’ll be there for the Day of the Dead on November 2nd, too! That’s a very important holiday for my family, you know. We visit the tombs of my grandparents and then have a family dinner in honor of our ancestors.
M: I remember. You’ve told me about it many times.
W: But you haven’t experienced it yet. I’m so happy that you’ll be there, too. Oh, Paul, thank you!
M: Well, pack your bags. We’re flying to Mexico City from Madrid on the 28th, but we leave New York on the 22nd.
W: Wonderful! We can visit our college friends there.
M: Exactly.

Text 9
W: Where is the best place to learn how to swim? I am afraid of the ocean, and there are no lakes around for me to practice in.
M: Why don’t you just come over to my house? I swim in my backyard all the time.
W: That sounds great! Which day do you want me to come over? I am busy with a family party this weekend, but I am free on Sunday afternoon. I also have Wednesday and Thursday free.
M: I have football team practice on Wednesday and a game the next day. I don’t know about Sunday though. Isn’t it supposed to be a thunderstorm then?
W: I think I heard about that bad weather coming this way. Maybe we should plan to go swimming sometime next week instead. If it is going to rain on Sunday, would you want to come to my house and watch a movie instead? My parents have a large collection of films.
M: That sounds fun. Do they have anything funny or action-filled to watch?
W: They have a lot of history movies, but there are ones to make you laugh too. I’m sure we will find something that we both can enjoy.
M: OK, well, I will send you a message later this week about it.

Text 10
M: Frank Whittle was a British Royal Air Force officer who invented the jet engine. He was born in a humble house in Coventry, England, on June 1st, 1907. His father was a clever engineer who passed on his skills to his son. Whittle became adventurous, developing an early interest in planes. He joined the Air Force and was taught about aircraft engines, gaining experience in the engineering workshops. He was excellent in his studies and became a pilot. During study time, he had the ideas that led to the creation of the jet engine, and he was given the legal right of ownership of his design in 1930. His studies earned him a place on a further course at CambridgeUniversity, where he graduated with a first class degree. His first engine was tested in 1937. Official interest grew but it was many years before it came into use. Whittle’s invention was of great importance. It increased the speed of planes dramatically and jet engines are now used by nearly every airline in the world. Whittle held many important jobs and became a hero in his country. He later married an American woman and moved to the United States, where he became a professor. He died at his home in Maryland on August 9th, 1996.
