Parents who smoke often open a window or turn on a fan to clear the air of second?hand smoke, but experts now have found another smoking?related threat to children's health:third?hand smoke.
That's the expression which is used to describe the invisible yet poisonous gases that stick to smokers' hair and clothing and other things in the room. These gases stay long after smoke has been cleared from the room.Young children can get them on their hands, especially if they're playing on the floor.
“Everyone knows that second?hand smoke is bad, but they don't know about this, ”said Dr.Jonathan P.Winickoff, the lead author of the study at Harvard Medical School.
“When their kids are out of the house, they might smoke.Or they smoke in the car. They think it's okay because the second?hand smoke isn't getting to their kids, ”Dr.Winickoff continued.“We needed an expression to describe these poisons that can't be seen.”
Third?hand smoke is what one smells when a smoker gets in an elevator after going outside for a cigarette, or in a hotel room where people smoked.“Your nose isn't lying, ”he said.“The smell is so bad that your brain is telling you, ‘Get away.’”
But far fewer people realized the risks of third?hand smoke.Since the expression is so new, the researchers asked people if they agreed with the statement that “breathing air in a room today where people smoked yesterday can harm the health of children”.Only 65 per cent of non?smokers and 43 per cent of smokers agreed with that statement.
“The central message here is that simply closing the kitchen door to take a smoke is not protecting the kids from the effects of that smoke,” said another doctor.“There are substances in the third?hand smoke, and they are a cancer risk for anybody of any age who comes close to them.”
The fact that third?hand smoke is harmful will most probably lead to a strict smoking ban at home.

A.If people smoked in a room, you can tell it.
B.Your nose sometimes gives wrong information.

It was a terribly rainy wet winter day. While I was walking from the library after getting my university applications for the next year at the end of my lunch break, a man was walking towards me with two huge boxes of brochures(小册子).
I thought,“What on earth is that man trying to do?Carry all those things?” Then all of a sudden he dropped them all!It was a terrible mess with hundreds of brochures all over the path in front of me!“Oh, no,” I thought. The man sat down and started trying to pick all of the brochures up.I couldn't believe how many people passed by without even caring at all.
I thought, “I'm not going to be one of those people who don't care about this man.I'm going to help him.” So, even though it was the end of my lunch break from work and I would be late if I stopped to help him, I didn't mind.If I explained what happened, I was sure my boss wouldn't mind too much. So, I helped him pick them all up.Then I asked if he would like a hand in carrying a box to where he went.He said yes gratefully.
I carried one of the heavy boxes. The box I had to carry was very heavy—as I'm quite a petite(娇小的) girl but I didn't complain.I just helped him with a big smile across my face.We got there and he thanked me very much for helping him out.He also gave me one of these lovely brochures about all the walks in and around the Bay of Plenty.

Some teens believe drugs will help them think better, and be more popular. These days, drugs can be found everywhere. Many teens are tempted(诱惑)by the excitement or escape from reality that drugs seem to offer.
Drugs are chemicals that change the way our bodies work. When you put them into your body, drugs find their way in your blood and are taken to parts of your body, such as your brain.
The effects of drugs can be different depending on the kind of drug taken, how much is taken, how often it is used, how quickly it gets to the brain, and what other drugs or food are taken at the same time.Although drugs can make you feel good at first, they can finally do a lot of harm to the body.
There are many kinds of drugs available, and there are many reasons for trying them regularly.People take drugs just for pleasure they believe they can bring.Often it's because someone told them that drugs would make them feel good or that they'd have a better time if they took them.
Many teens use drugs because they're unhappy or think drugs will help them escape their problems. The truth is that drugs don't solve problems—they simply hide feelings and problems. When a drug wears off, the feelings and problems remain, or become worse.Drugs can ruin every aspect of a person's life.

Linda Evans was my best friend like the sister I never had.We did everything together—piano lessons, movies, swimming, horseback riding. When I was 13, my family moved away.Linda and I kept in touch through letters, and we saw each other on special times—like my wedding and Linda's.Soon we were busy with children and moving to new houses, and we wrote less often. One day a card that I sent came back, stamped “Address Unknown”.I had no idea how to find Linda.
Over the years, I missed Linda very much.I wanted to share happiness of my children and then grandchildren. And I needed to share my sadness when my brother and then mother died. There was an empty place in my heart that only a friend like Linda could fill.
One day I was reading a newspaper when I noticed a photo of a young woman who looked very much like Linda and whose last name was Wagmans—Linda's married name.“There must be thousands of Wagmans.” I thought, but I still wrote to her.
She called as soon as she got my letter.“Ms.Tobin!” she said excitedly, “Linda Evans Wagmans is my mother.”Minutes later I heard a voice that I knew very much, even after 40 years, laughed and cried and caught up on each other's lives. Now the empty place in my heart is filled. And there's one thing that Linda and I know for sure:We won't lose each other again!
