Module 4 Sandstorms in Asia
Section Ⅲ Grammar
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
(2018·杭州二中高一期末)
A sandstorm refers to a high amount of wind occurring in sandy areas, usually in deserts, where the wind speed is able to lift the top layer (层) of sand from the ground, and push it in every direction. The sand involved in the sandstorm can reach heights of about 3.05 m~15.24 m.According to Sun Landong,a meteorologist with the Lanzhou Meteorology Observatory, visibility (能见度) was less than 100 metres in Minqin,a Gansu county near Inner Mongolia because of sand. When visibility drops to less than 1 kilometre,it is called a sandstorm.
It is very dangerous to experience a sandstorm.Sand can get into the nose, eyes, mouth and lungs. If you happen to be caught in a sandstorm, you must protect yourself by wearing masks and so on.
If you're driving when such a storm approaches,it's advised that you pull off the road, since it's difficult to continue driving. This is also important since vehicles can fail during sandstorms and you could end up stuck on the road.
Most sandstorms occur in spring, and during the daytime. Many of the areas around the Persian Gulf and the Sahara are related to the most serious storms.Since it's a natural phenomenon (现象),it can't be entirely controlled. In areas that are natural desert regions, you can't always prevent a sandstorm. There's much evidence that the planet Mars has dust storms, and clearly,no human intervention (介入) is responsible for such.Though it can move whole sand dunes and destroy crops,a sandstorm is not without advantage.

At a farm off Narrow Lane near Lexington,Kentucky,US,old?fashioned houses look over the little red barn (畜舍).The farm is mostly empty now.Jim Mahan and his family, who lived there for generations, have moved to a different plot of land in northern Fayette County. As land is sold, houses go up where there once were fields.
But during the summer, the barn is filled with city kids who have come to enjoy the farm. They're members of the Fayette County Livestock (FCL) Club, which showcases (展示) various skills. The barn is where they look after the animals.“A lot of Lexington kids don't know anything about farm life,” said Adria Meier,17,who has looked after goats and sheep for three years.“There is so much to learn.”
The dozen or so children who take care of their goats and sheep at the little red barn must take a six?hour class before they get an animal. They pay for their own animals but get special club programs, such as one that provides vet(兽医) care.
Mahan lets the group use the barn for free, and the kids spend up to three hours a day there during the summer. But as his land gets sold,he doesn't know whether the club can continue. What makes the FCL Club special is that most of the kids can't just walk out their doors and take care of their animals. Most are driven to the barn by their mothers, who usually hang around and chat as their kids feed and exercise the animals.
There are valuable lessons learned along the way.For instance, don't cut wool off your goat when there is wind, and sheep are social animals and will cry loudly when separated.“Tending to animals helps teach us responsibility.Unlike learning to shoot an arrow, caring for an animal isn't something you can simply abandon,” said Carly Playforth,16,of Lexington.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
We all know the characteristics of a sandstorm—strong winds, sand in the air, poor visibility(能见度).But what else do you know about it?Do you know for example, that the first sandstorm of 2009 hit North China's Inner Mongolia in late February?
Sandstorms are today a special treat of life in northern China because of desertification and the retreat (后退) of northern grasslands. They usually occur between February and May.
Fortunately, sandstorms this year should be fewer than in past years in northern China, according to the National Meteorological Center.
And the chances of sandstorms hitting Beijing are small, because recent rain has stopped drought (旱灾).Tree planting,as well as other measures taken by the government, has also helped decrease the chances of sandstorms in the city.
Sandstorms can be dangerous. However, there are measures you can take to protect yourself from harm.
?Wear a mask.Cover your nose and mouth with a mask that can keep out of sand,or use a wet handkerchief.
?If you are driving and the storm is far away from you,you may be likely to drive faster than it.If it looks like you will be caught in the storm, stop and wait it out.
?Take cover. If there is no shelter, then lie down.Keep eyes, nose and mouth covered.Cover your head with your arms or a backpack to protect yourself against flying objects.
If you are caught in a desert sandstorm, take the following actions.
?Mark your direction before lying down.It is easy to get lost in a desert.
?Keep plenty of water at hand.If you get lost, you need water to keep your life until you find your way or help arrives.
?Stay together if traveling in a group.Lock arms if caught in a sandstorm.
The most useful measure would actually be to prevent sandstorms. To make this goal come true, people should plant trees, and stop desertification.
Today, the straight?line distance between Tian'anmen Square and a desert called Tianmo in Hebei Province is only about 80 km.If desertification is not stopped, environmental protection experts say,it will probably not be long before Beijingers can catch a camel to work.

When I was younger,I was too shy to the point where I could not even make eye contact (接触) with people I didn't know.If someone greeted me in the hallway (走廊),I would lower my head and hurriedly pass.
Funnily enough, this would not have been such a big deal if I had connected with their values and interests. However, everyone in my school was much wealthier than me,and focused on partying and fashion which were contrary to my interests.Although I had a few acquaintances (熟人),no one seemed to understand me,unable to share my sometime dark humor and interest in science fiction.
Halfway through ninth grade,I was once again thrown into a school of strangers.Making friends was difficult, and I sat alone at lunch for the rest of the year.In tenth grade, however,I took part in my school's theatre program, where I met some of my closest friends. The theatre forced me to overcome my shyness and taught me to speak up for myself.Furthermore, pretending to be someone else gave me a sense of previously unknown confidence.
Although I have a lot going for me right now,I will never forget the struggles I had to overcome when I was younger. This is why, whenever I see someone struggling or standing by themselves,I always invite them to sit with my friends and me.I may not be able to give them my full attention all the time, but the main point is to let them know someone recognizes their existence and is willing to connect with them.
