Module 3 Body Language and Non?verbal Communication
Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading and Vocabulary

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
People can communicate with one another not only through verbal communication but also through nonverbal communication;moreover, the latter plays an important role.
Usually body language occurs unconsciously.Yet the body language we use decides to a large extent the quality of our communication. It follows that therefore it would be good to become conscious of our own and others' body language. We can learn to use our body language for a purpose. It is important to note that body language has different meanings in different cultures. How we can interpret body language depends on the situation, the culture, the relationship we have with the person as well as the gender (性别) of the other. This means that there is not one signal that has the same meaning all over the world.Body language is also interlinked with spoken language and a whole pattern of behavior from a person. As well as that, various body language signs can combine each other to make a particular meaning clear or strengthen the meaning of what we communicate.
Body language is known as nonverbal behavior which conveys (传递) information through gestures, actions and facial expressions.People communicate with each other by their body language in the ways of nodding, waving, eye contacting, shrugging and so on.According to the research results of psychologists, these ways can express what the verbal language cannot directly.
How we get across to someone is decided only for a small part by the words we speak. The person on the receiving end of our body language will have a feeling or impression that is often difficult to describe, difficult to put into words or difficult to prove what actually was communicated.Haven't we all said at times, “I have a feeling he/she likes me”, or something like,“I doubt if what he/she is saying is really the truth”.This type of feeling is called intuition (直觉).Body language plays a big role in intuition as it gives us messages about the other person that we can interpret at an intuitive level. It is therefore necessary to get to know our own body language first. We should learn about it so that we can recognize it in others as well as in ourselves.

What's your opinion about finding good friends? Speaking from my past experience, it is very difficult to find good friends that you can trust but once you have found them, they are worth keeping forever! Therefore, I think friendship is the most important relationship that anybody could have.
The qualities I look for in a friend are a good sense of humor and sensitivity.A friend would have to be strong?minded and highly spirited.I think that these qualities are the key qualities to look for in a good friend.
Even the best friends can still have arguments between themselves, though usually about more serious topics, rather than the usual childish arguments. Some matters can seriously affect friendship. If one of your friends started experimenting with harmful and dangerous drugs, what would you do? A good friend would try to help as much as possible, while a bad example of a friend would simply shrug and turn a blind eye.
Not only the bad things affect friendship—good activities do too, such as bonding with one another, not just by going out on a night with them, but by spending quality time with them and talking to each other. This is a key aspect of a good friendship.
Good friends do not always have to be in the same age group as you.I have a good friend and she is 47 years old and I am 16.
Unfortunately, some people lose contact with their friends as they grow older, which is a sad way to lose a good friend.
I think friendship is one of the most important things in life because if you have no friends you will have no happiness.

Module 3 Body Language and Non?verbal Communication
Section Ⅱ Integrating Skills & Cultural Corner

Ⅰ.七选五
Cats are the most popular pets among Americans. 1 Some cats like to catch small birds, like canaries (金丝雀).If someone looks very proud or satisfied with himself or herself, we say he or she looks like “the cat that ate the canary”.
2 So if you “play cat and mouse” with someone, you change between different kinds of behavior when dealing with another person. For example, a child might offer something sweet to her little brother and then take it away when he reaches for it.
One old and funny expression describes something that is the best.Americans might say that something is “the cat's miaow (喵)”. 3 Sometimes people sleep for a short time during the day. This is called “a cat nap”.If you tell about something that was supposed to be a secret, we say you “let the cat out of the bag”. 4 Then someone might ask if “the cat has got your tongue”.
Have you ever watched children in a classroom when their teacher leaves for a few minutes? 5 It means people sometimes misbehave when there is no supervision (监督).You may have heard this expression: curiosity killed the cat. This means being too concerned about things that are not your business might cause problems.
A.When the cat is away, the mice will play.
B.Sometimes you are not able to speak or answer a question.
C.Sometimes, a cat likes to play with a small animal it catches.
D.A cat will often catch a small animal and present it to its owner.
E.You may have known that cats spend most of their time sleeping.
F.So it is not surprising that there are many expressions with the word, “cat”.
G.The saying “that looks like something the cat dragged in” describes something in bad condition.

Section Ⅲ Grammar

Ⅰ.阅读理解

Communication is a part of our everyday life.Humans are social beings and we need to live with other people. When we communicate, we can make use of both spoken and written language. But are they enough? The answer is NO.Sometimes we have to communicate by using body movements instead of words. This is called body language.
Body language is very important in our lives for several reasons.
Firstly, it makes our communication more colourful. It's really hard to imagine a conversation without any body language involved. How dull and boring it will be to just talk without any gestures, facial expressions or any other body movements!Body language makes our talking more lively and interesting.
Secondly, it makes our communication more effective.Sometimes a gesture or a facial expression can make us more easily and quickly understood.Take a good speaker for example:his or her body movements will help him or her leave a deeper and stronger impression (印象) on listeners.
Finally, sometimes we have to use body language. On some occasions (场合), we are not allowed to speak loudly.Examples of this are in the library or in the quiet classroom. Then body language will be quite necessary. Also, when we meet someone in the street, there is no need for us to stop for a long chat, so a nod or a wave may be OK.

Northern Europeans spend a lot of time in their cold and cloudy winters planning their summer holidays. They are proud of their healthy color when they return home after the holiday. But they also know that a certain amount of sunshine is good for their bodies and general health.
In ancient Greece people knew about the healing (治疗) powers of the sun, but this knowledge was lost.At the end of the nineteenth century a Danish doctor, Niels Finsen, began to study the effect of sunlight on certain diseases, especially diseases of the skin.He was interested not only in natural sunlight but also in artificially (人造地) produced rays.Sunlight began to play a more important part in curing sick people.
A Swiss doctor, Auguste Roller, made full use of the sun in his hospital at Lysine.Lysine is a small village high up in the Alps. The position is important: the rays of the sun with the greatest healing power are the infra?red (红外线的) and ultra?violet (紫外线的) rays; but ultra?violet rays are too easily lost in fog and the polluted air near industrial towns.Dr.Roller found that sunlight, fresh air and good food cure a great many diseases. He was particularly successful in curing certain forms of tuberculosis with his “sun?cure”.
There were a large number of children in Dr.Roller's hospital. He decided to start a school where sick children could be cured and at the same time continue to learn. It was not long before his school was full.
In winter, wearing only shorts, socks and boots, the children put on their skis after breakfast and left the hospital. They carried small desks and chairs as well as their school books.Their teacher led them over the snow until they reached a slope which faced the sun and was free from cold winds. There they set out their desks and chairs, and school began.
Although they wore hardly any clothes, Roller's pupils were very seldom cold. That was because their bodies were full of energy which they got from the sun. But the doctor knew that sunshine can also be dangerous. If, for example, tuberculosis is attacking the lungs, unwise sunbathing may do great harm.
Today there is not just one school in the sun. There are several in Switzerland, and since Switzerland is not the only country which has the right conditions, there are similar schools in other places.

解析:选B 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“He decided to start a school where sick children could be cured and at the same time continue to learn.”可知,建立学校是为了让孩子们能够一边学习一边得到治疗。故选B项。
8.What can be inferred from the last paragraph of the passage?
A.“Sun?cure” schools are becoming popular everywhere.
B.Switzerland is the only country where “sun?cure” schools are popular.
C.Proper conditions are necessary for the running of a “sun?cure” school.
D.“Sun?cure” schools are found in countries where there is a lot of sunshine.
解析:选C 推理判断题。A项犯了以偏概全的错误,文章没有提到阳光学校在世界各地都很受欢迎;根据“there are similar schools in other places”排除B项;根据“since Switzerland is not the only country which has the right conditions”可知,修建阳光学校需要适当的条件,故选C项。
