(2019·安徽六安一中期末考试)
Soft winds blew throughout the Windy City today. We welcomed the winds, as it was another hot day in Chicago. The wind blew, bringing us some coolness—and making the weather not that hot. But it was a beautiful summer day with a blue sky.
Chicago is a great city for eating, and we have enjoyed tasting the different foods. Last night, we tried one of the city's most famous foods:deep?dish pizza. Chicago claims credit for the rich and cheesy thick?crust pizza, covered with a sweet tomato sauce. We topped it with olives and green peppers.
We were touring the city, mainly looking for delicious local foods. Today, we enjoyed a Polish specialty at lunch:pierogis, an Eastern European dumpling?like dish, filled with foods like potatoes, cheese, mushrooms, cabbage and meat. Polish immigrants started settling in Chicago in the 1850s, and the city has one of the largest Polish communities in the US.
We took a break from exploring the city to talk with some of you!Ashley and Caty logged onto the Internet for Talk 2 us. We spoke to an English teacher in Tokyo, Japan, and a graduate student in India.
Meanwhile, Adam searched for some locations around the city to shoot some videos. He chose a spectacular (壮丽的) spot:Navy Pier, Chicago's most?visited attraction. The winds from Lake Michigan kept visitors cool, and the view of the Chicago skyline never failed to impress. In fact, the view made all of us head over heels!
Our time in Chicago has come to an end. Tomorrow, the true journey begins, as we pass through Illinois and into Missouri. Springfield, the home of Abe Lincoln, and St. Louis, the“gateway to the West”, wait for us.

(2018·湖北黄冈中学期末考试)
Being lonely in the crowd might seem ridiculous. But according to a recent survey, the situation is all too common. Loneliness and other anxiety problems—worrying about life's pressures—can even lead to self-murder.
An article in China Daily gave no reason for this other than the usual blame on the post?80s generation. According to a high?level official, young people suffering from discouragement are mostly spoiled (宠坏的) and have not been taught to be independent, responsible and express a “thank?you”. Well, how do you like that?First, I don't think China's youth are exactly spoiled. They certainly have more things than their parents did, but a lot of money spent on them is for their education including various extra classes.
Discouragement and anxiety are now the fastest growing challenges in modern society. We sense a lack of close friends who we can talk to honestly and openly. In 1985, a US study found that one in ten people did not have such a friend. In 2006, it was one in four. It's easy to see the connection between loneliness and discouragement. But what actually causes this increasing loneliness?
Surely, with Internet social networking sites such as Renren, we have more friends than ever. But a new study has shown that the more time teenagers spend in front of computers, the less close they are to friends and family. WeChat or QQ may be fun but it lacks meaning, compared to personal connections in the real world.
And then there are those endless online games popular with young Chinese but increasingly there are more interesting choices. For example, new sports such as skateboarding are catching on (流行起来) in bigger cities, as is playing music in a band. These creative hobbies are done in a group and thus friendship can be stronger. Hopefully young people will also be drawn out of the Internet cafes and interactive (互动的) computer games that in fact fail to recreate a real interactive experience.
【语篇解读】 在人群中仍感到孤独已成为一种常态,文章就该现象分析了孤独产生的原因并提供了一些解决方法。

6.What does the writer think of the Internet social networking sites?
A.Open but ridiculous.
B.Honest and responsible.
C.Real and fun.
D.Interesting but meaningless.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第四段中的“WeChat or QQ may be fun but it lacks meaning, compared to personal connections in the real world.”可知,社交网站可能很有趣,但是并没有什么意义,故选D。

A.To stay long in Internet cafes.

Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
Grandpa Nybakken loved life—especially when he could play a trick on somebody. At those times, his large Norwegian frame shook with laughter while he pretended innocent surprise, exclaiming,“Oh, forevermore?! ”“But on a cold Saturday in downtown Chicago, Grandpa felt that God played a trick on him, and grandpa wasn't laughing.
Grandpa worked as a carpenter. On this particular day, he was building some boxes for the clothes his church was sending to an orphanage abroad. On his way home, he reached into his shirt pocket to find his glasses, but they were gone. He remembered putting them there that morning, so he drove back to the church. His search proved fruitless.
Suddenly, he realized what happened. The glasses had slipped out of his pocket unnoticed and fallen into one of the boxes, which he had nailed shut. His brand new glasses were heading for China! The Great Depression was at its height, and Grandpa had six children. He had spent twenty dollars for those glasses that very morning.
“It's not fair,” he told God as he drove home in frustration. “I've been very faithful in giving of my time and money to your work, and now this.”
Several months later, the director of the orphanage was on vacation in the United States. He wanted to visit all the churches that supported him, so he came to speak on Sunday night at my grandfather's small church in Chicago. Grandpa and his family sat in their usual seats among the small congregation (教堂会众).
“But most of all,” he said,“I must thank you for the glasses you sent last year.“Even if I had the money, there was simply no way of replacing those glasses. Along with not being able to see well, I experienced headaches every day, so my coworkers and I were much in prayer about this. Then your boxes arrived. When my staff removed the covers, they found a pair of glasses lying on the top. “After a long pause, he continued,”Folks, when I tried on the glasses, it was as though they had been custommade just for me! I want to thank you for being a part of that!”
The people listened, happy for the amazing glasses. But the director surely must have confused their church with another, they thought, there were no glasses on their list of items to be sent overseas.
But sitting quietly in the back, with tears streaming down his face, an ordinary carpenter realized the Master Carpenter had used him in an extraordinary way.

Welcome to your future life!
You get up in the morning and look into the mirror. Your face is young-looking. In 2035, medical technology is better than ever. Many people could live to be 150, so at 60, you're not old at all. And your parents could have an anti?aging treatment. Now, all three of you look the same age!

Saving Money While Traveling
There are a lot of matters to think on before going out on a trip. If you fail to plan the trip properly, then money will simply let itself loose from your pocket. Moreover, if you haven't planned a road map of your tour, then confusion is quite inevitable (必然的). __1__
Package tours. Tours and travel agencies have attractive offers for tourists wanting to spend a couple of days on trips. __2__Once you have accepted the package tour, all your expenses during the travel will be greatly reduced. You can save a lot in lodging (住宿) and traveling.
Inexpensive lodging. Never choose expensive lodging if your tour is a low?budget one. People tend to spend a lot booking luxury hotels(豪华旅馆), and save little to enjoy other activities during the trip. This idea is absolutely not wise when spending limited money on the trip is your main aim. Moreover, the expenses increase quickly when your kids are with you. __3__ You can use the money saved on good food and amusement.
__4__ The peak season is the time when rates are sky high due to the increase of millions of tourists who can afford to spend a lot of money. You, not being among this crowd that can spend generously, must book your holidays during the off season.
A guide map. Make a guide map about the places to visit, expenses of travel and the activities to try. While planning you should also estimate(估计) your total expenses. Calculate the maximum amount and try to spend less than that. __5__ Refer to the guide map while traveling and follow the money?saving travel tips as much as possible.
