Every January, more than 3, 000 people take part in one of the most difficult races on Earth: the Tough Guy Competition in the UK. The participants run, swim and climb around the 15 km course. But this is no normal race. These runners have to crawl through tunnels, run across a field of nettles (荨麻) and jump over fire. What's more, the competition takes place in January when temperatures are freezing. People travel from throughout the world to participate in it.
The competition is quite dangerous and every year there are accidents. Injuries like broken bones and cuts are quite common. One-third of the participants do not complete it. Runners have to be very athletic and most people train all the year to prepare for it. There are similar events, but this is the first one in the world. Many people do the competition because it is so famous. Every year the organizers change the events and add new things. This means that the competition stays thrilling and challenging, so people go back year after year.
First, the participants run 1 km along a muddy road. Next, they crawl under low nets on the ground. After the nets, the runners jump off a high platform into a lake and swim for 1 km. Then, they reach the field of fire. Here, the runners run across a field and jump over small bonfires (篝火). Next, the participants must crawl through a long tunnel which is partly under water. Finally, the runners run 2 km through nettles before they reach the finishing line.

In ancient Egypt, the pharaoh (法老)treated the message runner like a prince when he arrived at the palace if he brought good news. However, if the exhausted runner had the misfortune to bring the pharaoh unhappy news, his head was cut off.
Shades of that spirit spread over today's conversations. Once a friend and I packed up some peanut butter and sandwiches for an outing. As we walked light?heartedly out of the door, picnic basket in hand, a smiling neighbor looked up at the sky and said, “Oh boys, a bad day for a picnic. The weatherman says it's going to rain.” I wanted to strike him on the face with the peanut butter and sandwiches. Not for his stupid weather report, but for his smile.
Several months ago I was racing to catch a bus. As I breathlessly put my handful of cash across the Greyhound counter, the sales agent said with a broad smile, “Oh, that bus left five minutes ago.” Dreams of head?cutting!
It's not the news that makes someone angry. It's the unsympathetic attitude with which it's delivered. Everyone must give bad news from time to time, and winning professionals do it with the proper attitude. A doctor advising a patient that needs an operation does it in a caring way. A boss informing an employee that failed to get the job takes on a sympathetic tone. Big winners know, when delivering bad news, they should share the feeling of the receiver.
Unfortunately, many people are not aware of this. When you're tired from a long flight, has a hotel clerk cheerfully said that your room isn't ready yet? When you have your heart set on the roast beef, has your waiter merrily told you that he just served the last piece? It makes you as a traveler or diner want to land your fist right in their unsympathetic faces.
Had my neighbor told me the upcoming rainstorm with sympathy, I would have appreciated his warning. Had the Greyhound sales clerk sympathetically informed me that my bus had already left, I probably would have said, “Oh, that's all right. I'll catch the next one.” Big winners, when they bear bad news, deliver bombs with the emotion the bombarded (被轰炸的) person is sure to have.

Brazil Enjoys Carnival
You may have heard the music and seen dancing from the other side of the world when Carnival took place in Rio, Brazil. On Feb. 5, the festival officially began, lasting until Feb. 10.So why does this colorful, energetic event continue to excite people from all over the world?
Carnival is a crazy six?day celebration that happens around 40 days before the Christian festival of Easter. It happens at the hottest time in summer in Rio and marks the time before the start of Lent, a time when Christians are supposed to give up doing things they like. Those who take part in Carnival make the most of this chance to have fun by enjoying themselves as much as possible. They dance, wear colorful costumes and have a great time.
Carnival time has a soundtrack of samba music, a type of music that is completely Brazilian. During Carnival, the 14 best samba schools in Rio are each given the chance to show off their music and dancing, joined by 200 to 400 drummers (鼓手).
And it's not just Rio locals who entertain the crowds. According to Lonely Planet, some of the schools are “open to travelers who may be passing through town and are prepared to practice for weeks, learning a song, buying a brightly?colored costume and wearing it in front of tens of thousands of people”.
At the end, judges decide who brings the best dance moves, looks, words and heart to Carnival. And the winner is the pride of Brazil.
Overall, Carnival is about having a good time. Millions of people on the streets come to cheer on the amazing performers and join the street parties.
Would you like to go to Carnival in the future? Will you try to find ways to include its spirit of dancing and play in your everyday life? The party seems to get bigger, better, and more colorful every year.

“He said he was here to get my free haircut, ” Shelton told The Gaston Gazette about his young customer. “I said, ‘Brother, you're a VIP today.’ And I brought him to the front of the line.”
The story of Kamarian's free haircut and his friendship with the barber began in August, when the boy, a day before starting the fourth grade, first visited Next Level Barbershop, where Shelton works.
As Shelton cut Kamarian's hair that day, the pair struck up a quick friendship. “There was just something about him. I could tell for his age he was super mature and he was a great dude (男人).” Shelton was inspired to make Kamarian a promise: give the kid free haircut for life. Kamarian's end of the deal is to earn good grades in school.
Last week, Kamarian marched in with his first report card of the school year. He had fulfilled his end of the bargain, as promised, and Shelton—who Kamarian now calls “Uncle Mike”—kept his words. “As long as you keep your grades right, I will keep you looking right, ” shelton told the boy.
Kamarian's mom, Cameron Fox, said she was extremely proud of her son. The single mom said she was also grateful to Shelton for acting like a father figure to the boy. “I just appreciate his open arms and making us feel welcome, and giving Kamarian something to look forward to, ” Fox told ABC News. “It's just awesome.”
