Module 1 British and American English
Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading and Speaking
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
American and British people use different greetings. In the USA the commonest greeting is “ Hi!”. In Britain it is “ Hello !” or “How are you?”. “Hi!”is creeping (不知不觉地进入) into British English, too. When they are introduced to someone, the Americans say, “Glad to know you.” The British say,“How do you do?”or “Pleased to meet you.” When Americans say “Goodbye”,they nearly always add “ Have a good day.” or “Have a good trip.” to friends and strangers alike. Britons are already beginning to use “Have a good day.”
The British usually use “got” in the sense of “have”. The Americans hardly ever do. American English:Do you have a car, room, etc. ? Yes,I do. British English:Have you got a car, room, etc. ?Yes,I have.
Many American words ending in “or”,e.g. honor, labor are spelt in British English with an “our”,e.g. honour, labour. Many verbs in American English with “ize”or “izing”forms,e.g. organize, realizing are spelt in British English with “ise”or“ising”,e.g. organise, realising. In American English,“practice”is used both for the verb and noun. In British English, the verb is spelt“practise”,and the noun “practice”. In American English, one writes“traveler”,while in British English, one writes “traveller”.
It was once predicted that British and American English would become separate languages finally. But the opposite has happened. The links between the two countries are so strong that linguistically (语言上地),and probably culturally too, they are closer together than ever.

Ⅰ.七选五
What's the biggest problem with memory skills?__1__ There are many memory skills that work well, but you'll forget them when you need them most—unless you make using them a habit. So when you take the time to learn a technique, use it until it becomes automatic. Here are some for you to have a try.
Use a story?list. As a child,I went to a party. There was a game that involved looking at a table covered in fifteen various items. __2__ Finally, one boy won the prize by remembering all fifteen items. Later,I learned why he won. His father taught him a simple trick that none of us other kids knew. The skill is to tie the items together in an imaginative story.
__3__ When you learn a person's name, for example, tell yourself,“Remember that”. This signals your unconscious(潜意识的)mind to rank this input as more important.
Know why you want to remember something, and how you'll remember it. To remember a person, for example, ask why they'll be important to you in the future, imagine where you'll see them next, and connect that to anything you notice about them. Seeing the importance of remembering really helps. __4__
Do you ever forget where you put your keys? You have probably tried retracing (追溯) your steps,at least doing it in your imagination. __5__ When you set the keys on the chair, see yourself walking in and setting the keys on the chair. You won't forget where they are.
There are many more of these memory tricks. If you want them to be useful, though, don't just read about them. Make one or two memory skills a habit and start today.
A. Tell yourself to remember.
B.Where can you pick up these skills?
C.The answer is remembering to use them.
D.It is not easy for us to learn memory techniques.
E.We had to write down as many items as we could remember.
F.Additional connections can set the memory more firmly in your brain.
G.This can work well, but even better is to prevent the forgetting beforehand.

Section Ⅲ Grammar
Ⅰ.阅读理解
A
A person's name is very important. Some names also have special meanings in popular American expressions.
An average Joe was walking down the street and was lost. An average Joe is a common person—either male or female. He did not know Jack about where he was going. By this,I mean he did not know anything about where to find things in the city.
So average Joe asked John Q. Public, also a common person—male or female, for directions to the nearest bank.
“Jeez Louise,” said John Q. Public. This is an expression of surprise. “Jeez Louise, don't you know that all banks are closed today? It is Saturday.”
“For Pete's sake,I do not believe you,” said average Joe. This is also an expression used to show a feeling like surprise or disappointment. He was being a doubting Thomas, someone who does not believe anything he is told.
At that moment,Joe Blow, also an expression for a common man,was walking down the street with a woman. Now this Joe Blow was not walking next to a plain Jane, meaning a woman who is neither ugly nor pretty. She is simply plain. No,the woman with Joe Blow was a real Sheila—a beautiful woman.
Average Joe asked the woman. “No way,Joe,many banks are open on Saturdays,” she answered. This is a way of saying “no”.
Average Joe did not know either of these two people from Adam. That is,he did not know them at all. But he followed their directions to the nearest bank.
When he arrived,he walked to the desk of the chief bank employee. Now this man was a true Jack of all trades. He knew how to do everything.
“I am here to withdraw some money so I can pay my taxes to Uncle Sam,” said average Joe. Uncle Sam represents the United States government. The banker produced some papers and told average Joe to sign his John Hancock at the bottom. A John Hancock is a person's signed name—a signature. Historically,John Hancock was one of the signers of the United States Declaration of Independence. Hancock had a beautiful signature and signed his name larger than all the others.
As average Joe left the bank he began to sing. But sadly, average Joe was not a good singer. He was a Johnny One Note. He could only sing one note.

Ananya Vinay spent 45 minutes and 21 rounds going back and forth with 14?year?old Rohan Rajeev,of Edmond,Okla. But Rohan finally misspelled the word “marram”,and Ananya went on to win after coolly spelling two more words correctly. The winning word of this year was “marocain”. Ananya will take home more than $40,000 in cash and prizes.
Formed in 1925,the Spelling Bee is the nation's largest and longest?running educational contest(竞赛). It aims not only to encourage children to perfect the art of spelling, but also to help widen their knowledge of the English language. Participants cannot be older than fourteen nor can they be past the eighth grade. To qualify for the Bee,a speller must win a regional(地区的)contest.
Ananya's win was the first single victory in three years at the Bee,with the contest previously ending in a tie since 2013.The bee added a test this year to break the situation. Ananya is the 13th Indian?American to win the bee in a row. She stood out as a newcomer last year. Her score on the written spelling and vocabulary test would have been high enough to make the top 50,but she missed a word “multivalent”on stage. As a sixth?grader, she could have come back for two more years, but she failed. Now,she'll return only to help present the trophy(奖杯)to next year's winner.
Among the other standout spellers this year was the youngest contestant ever,6-year-old Edith Fuller, from Tulsa,Okla. But she was sent home in tears despite spelling all of her words correctly.
