When going through major life changes, like changing careers, I would change the people with whom I spent the most time. We've all gone through periods when the people in our lives have changed—graduation, moving to a new city, getting a new job, joining a new club, etc. I don't think I need to convince you just how much influence other people can have over your identity. If you've ever experienced a major switch in your people environment, then you know that you change as well.
Most people don't make these choices consciously though. You might consciously decide to spend more time with a certain friend, or you may ask someone out on a date to begin a new relationship. But few people choose their existing friendships deliberately.
There's no “getting rid of people”. People are always dropping into and out of each other's lives. Associations grow into friendships, and friendships fade into associations. You don't get rid of anyone. The truth is that in order to make room for new people and new experiences, you may need to loosen up some of your existing connections.
What about loyalty? Shouldn't you always be loyal to your friends? Once you have a close friend, even if their influence on you is slightly harmful, shouldn't you stick by them?
Loyalty to a friend sometimes means having to let go. It means being loyal to their highest and best self as well. If someone is destroying his health by smoking, for example, you aren't showing loyalty by smoking right along with him. True loyalty sometimes requires that you break damaging connections, get yourself back on solid ground, and then decide what you can really do to help your friend.
It can take a lot of courage to tell someone, “I'm sorry, but I can't have you in my life anymore.” But even though this might seem like a selfish act at times, it's often the best thing for the other person too. If a relationship is holding you back in some way, understand that it's also hurting the other person. For example, if you work for a violent boss, your acceptance of that situation is considered to be silent approval, encouraging your boss to continue to behave violently.

Daniel Anderson,a famous psychologist, believes it's important to distinguish television's influences on children from those of the family.“We tend to blame TV,”he says, “for problems it doesn't really cause, overlooking our own roles in shaping children's minds.”
One traditional belief about television is that it reduces a child's ability to think and to understand the world. While watching TV, children do not merely absorb words and images. Instead, they learn both explicit and hidden meanings from what they see. Actually, children learn early the psychology of characters in TV shows. Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them, explaining new words and ideas. Yet, most parents use an educational program as a chance to park their kids in front of the set and do something in another room.
Another argument against television is that it replaces reading as a form of entertainment. But according to Anderson, the amount of time spent watching television is not related to reading ability. TV doesn't take the place of reading for most children;it takes the place of similar sorts of recreation, such as listening to the radio and playing sports. Things like parents' educational background have a stronger influence on a child's reading.“A child's reading ability is best predicted by how much a parent reads,” Anderson says.
Traditional wisdom also has it that heavy television?watching lowers IQ scores and affects school performance. But here, too, Anderson notes that no studies have proved it. In fact, research suggests that it's the other way around.“If you're smart young, you'll watch less TV when you're older,” Anderson says. Yet, people of lower IQ tend to be lifelong television viewers.
For years researchers have attempted to show that television is dangerous to children. However, by showing that television promotes none of the dangerous effects as conventionally believed, Anderson suggests that television cannot be condemned without considering other influences.
5.By watching TV, children learn ________.
A.images through words
B.more than explicit meanings
C.more about images than words
D.little about people's psychology
根据第二段的“Instead, they learn both explicit and hidden meanings from what they see.”
6.An educational program is best watched by a child ________ .
A.on his own
B.with other kids
C.with his parents
D.with his teachers
根据第二段的“Furthermore, as many teachers agree, children understand far more when parents watch TV with them...”
7.Which of the following is most related to children's reading ability?
A.Radio?listening.
B.Television?watching.
C.Parents' reading list.
D.Parents' educational background.
根据第三段倒装第二句“Things like parents' educational background have a stronger influence on a child's reading.”
8.What is the main purpose of the passage?
A.To advise on the educational use of TV.
B.To describe TV's harmful effects on children.
C.To explain traditional views on TV influences.
D.To present Anderson's unconventional ideas.

When I first learn to write in English, I ran into many difficulties. The main problem was in that I always thought in Chinese and tried to translate anything into Chinese. My teacher advised me to keep my diary. I follow her advice and put down 100 words or so each day. Soon I began to enjoy talk to myself on paper as I was learning to express me in simple English. One day I wrote a little story and showed to my teacher. She liked it very much and reads it to the class. All said the story was a good one. Their word were a great encouragement to me.

Following the crowd may not always be in a person's best interest. But new research suggests that teens who get along with their friends may end up healthier as adults.
Scientists have known that close friendships help boost health. That's true for both teens and adults. The finding inspired Joseph Allen, a psychologist at the University of Virginia, and his team to study whether experiences during teen years would influence adult health.
So they followed 171 teens, starting when the kids were just 13. They interviewed each one every year for five years, and also spoke to these teens' closest friends, who provided additional information about the quality of their friendships. The same 171 people were interviewed again at ages 25, 26 and 27. This time, the questions surveyed each person's overall health. When the researchers analyzed the data, they found a strong connection between a teen's behavior and adult health. Teens who had close friends grew up to be the healthier adults. Whether teens held back their feelings or expressed them to close friends also influenced later health. Those who held back their feelings were more likely to be sick as adults. The connection held up even after the scientists accounted for other possible influences on health. Weight, family income and drug use were all examined. So were mental health issues, such as anxiety and depression. And in these people, such other factors did not explain adult health as well as teen friendships did.
Getting along with the crowd may have benefits, says Allen, but there are also drawbacks. Teens who are more independent tend to do better at school and work. And peer pressure may lead some kids to engage in risky behavior, such as smoking, drinking or using drugs. Dealing with it is an ongoing challenge, Allen acknowledges. “Finding the right balance is the key. Teens shouldn't lose heart for not finding this easy.”And, he adds, “Parents need to be understanding about the pressures teens face.”

We have most friends at the age of 26 after having spent the first quarter of our lives building up our friendship circle,a new research has claimed.
The research into friendship shows that our social circle peaks at 26 years and 7 months, at which we typically have five close friends. Women are most popular at 25 years and 10 months, with men hitting the highest friendship point a little later at 27 years and 3 months.
The research, by Forever Friends, shows that about a third of adults meet their closest friends while at school, with about a fifth saying they meet them at work.
Social networks such as Facebook and Twitter now also play a major role in building new friendship. The research points out that 25 to 34?year?olds make 22 friends via Facebook, compared to 18 to 24?year?olds who make 12, and 35 to 44?year?olds who make just four.
Forever Friends' relationship coach Sam Owen says:“It is no coincidence that over a third of us meet our best friends at school. It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot. As adults we can often forget how powerful these small things are and how the little things can make a difference.”
Later in life we find ourselves losing friends. Over half of us lose friendship through moving, while 36% say that over time they grow apart from close pals. Having children also causes 19% to drift away from childhood friends.
With growing pressures being put on friendship these days, it's important to make time for our friendship.
5.How many friends can a 20?year?old college student make via Facebook?
A.4. B.12.

根据第四段最后一句中的“...via Facebook,compared to 18 to 24?year?olds who make 12”可知,通过脸谱网年龄在18到24岁的人可以交到12个朋友,故B项正确。
6.In Paragraph 5,the author is trying to tell the readers ________.
A.how important making friends is
B.that friendship is not easy to keep
C.how much has been done to keep friendship
D.that friendship at school is important
根据第五段Sam Owen所讲的话的第二句“It is a key time in our lives when friendship is growing through sharing notes, giving gifts, seeing each other regularly and laughing a lot.”
7.The underlined phrase“drift away from”in Paragraph 6 means “_____”.
A.make sense of B.lose contact with
C.feel sorry for D.make up with
根据倒数第二段的第二句“Over half of us lose friendship...apart from close pals.”及画线词所在句“Having children also causes 19% to...childhood friends.”
8.This passage is most probably taken from ________.

Public opinion may have some say in who is considered “beautiful” on the outside, but inner beauty takes on a whole other meaning. 1 . Learn what beauty means to you and have the confidence to live by your own rules starting today.

Have confidence in who you are. In addition to stressing your character strengths, you can apply other ways to feel more confident. 3 . This can be anything from making music to playing sports. Doing things you are good at builds self?respect.
Smile and laugh more. 4 , just arranging your face into a smiling expression can thoroughly change your mood. Smiles can lead to a more positive mood and a more hopeful attitude. It can not only make you feel beautiful inside, but also improve your outer beauty.
5 . A reliable method of developing your own inner beauty is adopting the habit of seeing the beauty in everything. All around you, there are amazing people, places and things. Make an effort to slow down and acknowledge these daily.
A.Notice the beauty around you
B.When you want to get the feeling of confidence
C.Even if you don't quite feel up to it at the moment

F.It has more to do with your character than your appearance
G.Frequently take part in activities in which you perform well

4.解析:选C 由空后的逗号和“just arranging...your mood”可知,此空应是从句,所以选项B和C进入考虑的范围,选项C中的关键词“it”指代前一句的“Smile and laugh more.”,且C项与空后内容语意连贯,所以选C。
5.解析:选A 根据本段内容尤其是本段中的“...seeing the beauty in everything. All around you...” 所以选A。
