Ⅰ.七选五
(2019·湖北高二期中)
While it is impossible to live completely free of stress, it is possible to prevent stress as well as reduce its effect when it can't be avoided. The U.S. Department of Health and Human Services offers the following suggestions for ways to deal with stress.
?Try physical activity.
When you are nervous, angry or upset, try releasing the pressure through exercise or physical activity. 1
?Take care of yourself.
You should make every effort to eat well and get enough rest. If you easily get angry and cannot sleep well enough, or if you're not eating properly, it will be more likely that you will fall into situations of stress. 2
?Make time for yourself.
3 Don't forget, play can be just as important as work. You need a break from your daily routine to just relax and have fun. Go window shopping or work on a hobby. Allow yourself at least a half hour each day to do something you enjoy.
? 4
Stress can result from disorganization(杂乱无章) and a feeling that “There's so much to do, and not enough time.”Trying to take care of everything at once can be too much for you and, as a result, you may not achieve anything. Instead, make a list of everything you have to do, and then do one thing at a time. 5 Set out to do the most important tasks first.
A.Bear in mind the most important task.
B.Schedule time for both work and play.
C.Check off each task as it is completed.
D.Make a list of the things you need to do.
E.For example, you could take your job as your hobby.
F.If stress repeatedly keeps you from sleeping, you should consult a doctor.
G.Running, walking, or playing tennis are just some of the activities you might try.

(2019·广东湛江一中期末)
To son, Cecil,
Just a quick note before I start in earnest. When I write this, you are 8, still a little boy. In 2002, I was called to active duty in the Marine Corps in the war on terrorism. On the 11th of September 2001 when America was attacked, I knew that I would eventually have to go and I was filled with a deep sense of sadness. That night as you and Keiko were asleep, I looked at your little faces and couldn't help but fight the tears. I knew it would be hard for you because I had a similar experience. When I was a little boy aged 6, my dad, your Grandpa Cawley, was sent to Vietnam during the war there. I remember how much I missed him, too. But now unfortunately I have come to realize just how difficult it must have been for Grandpa to be away from his children for a year. Thinking about this, I wanted to put my thoughts and feelings down for you and your sister. I am so sorry that I had to leave for such a long time. There is no place I would rather be than with you and Keiko. You two are the lights of my life. I have known no greater joy than in the few years since you two were born. I hope to have many more years with you. If this doesn't happen, then know that I love you more than words can express. If for some reason I don't make it home, I will need you to take care of your little sister and your Mom. You will be the man of the Cawley family. Be good my son and God will watch over you as he has me. I will be waiting impatiently for the time when we can all be together again.
Yours,
Dad

(2019·江西南昌一中月考)
More than 4 in 10 cancers—600,000 in the UK alone—could be prevented if people led healthier lives, say experts. The population of the UK is about 63,000,000.
Latest figures from Cancer Research UK show smoking is the biggest avoidable risk factor, followed by unhealthy diets. The charity advises people to live healthily, limit alcohol intake and do regular exercise.
According to the figures from 2007 to 2011, more than 300,000 cases of cancer recorded were linked to smoking. A further 145,000 were linked to unhealthy diets containing too much processed food. Obesity contributed to 88,000 cases and alcohol to 62,200.Sun damage to the skin and physical inactivity were also contributing factors.
Professor Max Parkin, a Cancer Research UK statistician, says, “There's now little doubt that certain lifestyle choices can have a big influence on cancer risk, with research around the world all pointing to the same key risk factors.”
“Of course everyone wants to enjoy some extra treats during the Christmas holidays so we don't want to ban beef pies and wine but it's a good time to think about taking up some healthy habits.”
“Leading a healthy lifestyle can't guarantee someone won't get cancer but we can stack the odds in our favour by taking positive steps.”
Public Health England says a healthy lifestyle can play an important role in reducing cancer risk. It says campaigns such as Smokefree, Dry January and Change 4 Life Sugar Swaps all aim to raise public awareness. It's important that we not only continue to make progress in noticing cancer earlier and improving treatments, but helping people understand how they can reduce their risk of developing cancer in the first place remains important in dealing with cancer.

It was December 25, 1914, only 5 months into World War Ⅰ. German, British, and French soldiers, already sick and tired of the senseless killing, disobeyed their superiors and started socialising with “the enemy” along two?thirds of the Western Front.
German troops held up Christmas trees with signs “Merry Christmas”. Thousands of troops ran across the battlefields covered with dead bodies. They sang Christmas songs, exchanged photographs of loved ones back home, shared food and even played football. Soldiers hugged men they had been trying to kill a few short hours before. They agreed to warn each other if their officers forced them to fire their weapons, and to aim high.
Fear ran through the military leaders on both sides. They felt that their power was being challenged:soldiers declaring their brotherhood with each other and refusing to fight. Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even shot. By March 1915 the socialising movement had been destroyed and the killing machine was back in full operation. Over the next three years more than fifteen million people died in the war.
Not many people have heard the story of the Christmas Truce (休战). On Christmas Day, 1988, a local radio host in Boston played Christmas in the Trenches, a song about the Christmas Truce, several times and was stunned by his listeners' response. Thousands of people called in, praising the song, with many moved to tears by the amazing events it describes.
You can probably guess why the callers were in tears. The Christmas Truce story goes against most of what we have been taught about people. It lets us see the world as it can be and says, “This really happened once.” It shows us the potential we have as humans, and contradicts all of those TV and newspaper stories that tell us how mean and heartless people are. It is like hearing that our deepest wishes really are true:the world really can be different.

C.They increased the number of officers to control the soldiers.
D.They warned the soldiers that they would face severe punishment.
解析:选D 细节理解题。根据第三段中的“Generals declared this unexpected peacemaking illegal and said that participating soldiers would face a military court. Those found guilty would be imprisoned or even shot.”可知,将军对士兵进行了严厉的警告,违令者会被监禁甚至枪杀。故选D。

What if our babies could somehow tell us what they're thinking about, what they want, and what makes them unhappy? Robyn Holt, researcher for Baby Talk New Zealand, says they can. Holt heard about baby sign language through an advertisement and decided to go along to a workshop(研讨会).
“Sign language is something that always interests me, and I think it can be really cool to try this with a baby because we are always guessing all the time what they actually want.”
Holt started using baby sign language with her baby son Benjamin, now 12, and within two weeks he started to sign the sign for milk. She has since used it with her two younger sons Dominic, 8, and Matthew, 3.
Baby sign language is nothing new:the practice (which is based on adult sign language) has been out in America for more than 30 years. But it is enjoying a rebirth in New Zealand.
The idea behind baby sign language is that babies do have the ability to communicate their needs if they are given the right tools to do so. Although many mothers develop an intuition(直觉) about whether their baby's crying is from hunger, tiredness, or pain, baby sign language creates a direct form of communication that unlocks the mystery.
When babies are between 6?months and 12 to 13?months, parents can begin to teach them sign language:use the sign for milk while feeding, and also talk about milk, so that the child begins to make the link in their brain. Then they can begin to add other signs, i.e.food, sick or pain.
“I know of one parent. Her child was signing the sign for hurt by his mouth, and she realised his first teeth were growing. It makes life so much easier.” said Holt.

B.can easily make the parents understood
C.has developed from adult sign language
D.was designed by Robyn Holt

A.helpful B.difficult
C.interesting D.special
