A
I started to learn English from the first grade. That year I was six.In class I learned basic phrases for greeting and describing objects.I don't have much memory for the first year of English learning. The only thing that I still remember is reading vocabulary list.A classmate of mine who was good at English would lead the whole class to read the list. One of the new words that I learned that year was“earth”.“The earth orbits the sun,”he said in Chinese.Every time we came to the word“earth”,he would repeat that sentence.I was secretly admiring him because he knew the earth orbits the sun.
My family moved when I was in my second grade, and I transferred to a private school. My English class continued.Luckily I could use the same series of text books.
I stayed in the same private school for my junior high school, which is from the 7th to the 9th grade. In junior high school,I hardly felt my English skill improved because the first English class here was still titled “Good Morning”and the content was still basic greetings.
Following was one year of high school life:a_different_school,the_same_story.
Then my family moved again, and I began to really use English. We came to America.I attended a couple years of high school, and now I'm in college.I learn to write essays and start to read books in English.I can see my progress. However,I still have a lot of space to improve. In writing, the flow between sentences isn't good and I'm still using basic words. In speaking, maybe because I hang out with Chinese?speaking friends too much,it takes me time to think when telling long stories.

While an entire month free of homework or tests may sound too good to be true, that is exactly what the students at Sturenskolan School in Boden, Sweden were treated to in April. What's more, if the results of the experiment prove encouraging, starting 2019, the middle schoolers will never have to worry about after?school work or tests, aside from the national examinations, which are compulsive for students across the country.
The school's principal, Petronella Sirkka, who came up with the idea, said,“We are constantly receiving new reports that our children feel bad. And that's because they have a high level of stress all the time. This is our way of trying to reduce that stress.”
The educator says that while banning homework and tests sounds radical (激进的), it makes sense given the changes in the curriculum and approaches to education. While in the past students were primarily subjected to memorizing facts, learning today is all about reflection and analysis. As a result, it is often harder for kids, especially those with little support at home, to comprehend the material by themselves.
Sirkka is not the only one who believes after?school work does not help students learn. In March 2018, another principal in Canada also decided to do away with homework. They hope parents will spend the extra time reading to their kids.
While the long?term impact of the recent decisions made by the two educators remains to be seen, the experiment has already proved successful in Finland which has done away with homework, grades, and even teaching by subjects for many years. Yet, Finnish students always rank high in the PISA (Programme for International Student Assessment) tests especially in math and science but they have the least homework! Hopefully, it will only be a matter of time before US educators follow their lead and ban after?school work as well!
5.The students at Sturenskolan School had no homework in April because ________.
A.the headmaster was experimenting with her idea
B.they needed to do some experiments during the month
C.they were busy preparing for the national examinations
D.the headmaster had to carry out the government's policy
根据第二段第一句中的“The school's principal,Petronella Sirkka,who came up with the idea”,并结合第一段的内容可知,Sturenskolan学校的学生们在四月份没有家庭作业和考试是该校校长提出的想法,故A项正确。
6.What makes children's learning hard nowadays?
A.Children have to do more analyzing.
B.The approach to education is complex.
C.Children get no support at home and school.
D.There are many more facts to memorize.
根据第三段第二、三句“While in the past students were primarily subjected to memorizing facts, learning today is all about reflection and analysis. As a result, it is often harder for kids, especially those with little suppor at home,to comprehend the material by themselves.”
7.What does Petronella Sirkka most likely advise parents to do?
A.Help children with their homework.
B.Free children from after?school housework.
C.Spend more time reading to their children.
D.Communicate with teachers from time to time.
根据第四段尾句“They hope parents will spend the extra time reading to their kids.”
8.What can we infer about the students in Finland?
A.They study the hardest at school.
B.They have a more relaxing school life.
C.They enjoy great success after graduation.
D.They all have a talent for math and science.
根据尾段第一句中的“the experiment has already proved successful in Finland which has done away with homework, grades, and even teaching by subjects for many years”可知,多年来,芬兰已经取消了家庭作业、成绩等级,甚至科目教学。

Three weeks ago I bought the electronic dictionary at a shop. But I hadn't used it for several day when I found it didn't work. So I went to the shop, but only to be told that the problem could not be solved unless it was sent back the factory where it was made. Then I did like I was told without any delay. Unfortunately, the factory promised to repair the dictionary and sent it back in a week. Two weeks has past, but I haven't yet received one. I have no idea why things are like this. I'm looking forward to receive my dictionary as soon as possible.

Module 4 Which English?
Section Ⅰ Introduction & Reading and Vocabulary
A
English is an important global language, but that doesn't mean it's easy to learn. Many experts have tried to make English easier for students to learn—but they weren't always successful.
In 1930,Professor C.K.Ogden of Cambridge University invented Basic English. It had only 850 words (and just eighteen verbs) and Ogden said most people could learn it in just thirty hours. The problem was that people who learned Basic English could write and say simple messages, but they couldn't understand the answers in “real” English. It was also impossible to explain a word if it wasn't in the Basic English word list. For example,if you wanted a watermelon, you asked for “a large green fruit with the form of an egg, which has a sweet red inside and a good taste”.
R.E. Zachrisson,a university professor in Sweden, decided that the biggest problem for learners of English was spelling,so he invented a language called Anglic. Anglic was similar to English, but with much simpler spelling. “Father” became “faadher”,“new” became “nue” and “years” became “yeerz”. Unfortunately for some students of English,Anglic never became popular.
Even easier is the language which a ship's captain uses: it's called “seaspeak”. Seaspeak uses a few simple phrases for every possible situation. In seaspeak, for example you don't say, “I'm sorry. What did you say?” or “I didn't understand. Can you repeat that?”It's just “Say again.” No more grammar.
In the age of international communication through the Internet,a new form of English might appear. A large number of the world's emails are in English and include examples of “NetLingo” like OIC(Oh,I see) and TTYL (Talk to you later). In another fifty years,English might not exist and we will probably all speak fluent “Internetish”.

We humans are addicted to sugar. That makes sense. All animals need sugar to live. It's the fuel that powers our cells. So it's not surprising that we're born to want the sweet stuff.
Sugar stores the sun's energy like a battery. After a meal, your body breaks down foods into their building blocks. It uses some sugar for energy right away. The rest get stored for the body to break down later. It's a myth that sugar makes you extremely excited, but having a sugary snack can give you a quick burst of energy. That's because the sugar in sweet foods is easy for your body to turn into fuel. When you eat other kinds of foods, like vegetables, it takes longer for your body to break the sugar down.
These days it's easy to find sweet snacks. Sodas, candy, cakes and even foods that seem healthy, such as yogurt, can be packed with sugar. Food makers add sugar, because they know that to humans, sweet makes everything taste better. Americans eat about 20 teaspoons of extra sugar every day. That's way more than what is good for us.
Eating too much sugar can cause more than a stomachache. It can make people overweight, decay the teeth and even cause diabetes. However, experts aren't worried about naturally sweet foods—the problem is added sugar. So go ahead and enjoy sweet apples or even sugar?rich carrots that are also full of vitamins and other good stuff.
Even cake is great once in a while, as long as you don't overdo it. After all, no one wants life to be dull. And your body needs its fuel!
5.The first two paragraphs are mainly developed by ________.
A.cause and effect B.problem and solution
C.giving examples D.making comparisons
根据第一段尾句“So it's not surprising that we're born to want the sweet stuff.”和第二段倒数第二句“That's because the sugar in sweet foods is easy for your body to turn into fuel.”,并结合第一、二段的内容可知,第一段解释了人天生需要糖的原因;第二段解释了甜食能快速补充能量的原因;据此可推知,第一、二段是通过解释因果的方法组织内容的,故A项正确。
6.People may be tricked into eating too much sugar because ________.
A.no one wants life to be boring
B.we're born to want the sweet stuff
C.so?called healthy food can be packed with sugar

8.What can be a suitable title for the text?
A.Sugar Is Everywhere
B.Sugar Brings Happiness
C.Why Do We Love Sugar?
D.Why Does Sugar Make Us Fat?

How to Make Good Conversation
“Conversation is the most sociable of all human activities.” I totally agree with this point.Conversation is the main part of everyone's daily life.__1__ What's more, good conversation is the most interesting part for us.In my view, you should pay attention to the following three issues to make good conversation.
To start good conversation we'd better prepare some questions.__2__ We can ask some questions to show our politeness and care for others.Like, do you have a good sleep last night? Or what do you do in your spare time? Think twice before you throw a question to others.
__3__ We should pay attention to what others said and think in their shoes.Allow the others to do most of the talking.Be patient and hold interest for their comments and make some sound to show you are listening carefully.__4__ In this way you will get the credit for being a good conversationalist as well as a good listener and it will help you to make friends with others.
We always say eyes are the windows to the soul. Appropriate eye contact is like a great element of the main dish which makes it more delicious.__5__ It will help us to improve mutual(相互的) understanding.Do not hesitate to look into them. But don't stare at them and don't look at them for too long a time.It would make others feel uneasy and unwilling to go on talking.
A.Good questions make people feel comfortable.
B.Without conversation, life would be as cold as a rock.
C.The most important part of conversation is to listen.
D.Enjoy good conversation and be friends with them.
