A
Antarctic seabirds are breeding (繁殖) later, because thinner sea ice is causing their food supplies to decline,a new study says. The birds, which nest in East Antarctica, have delayed their spring arrival by an average of nine days and egg?laying by an average of two days over the past 50 years, according to polar researchers from the French National Center for Scientific Research in Villiers en Bois,France. Study authors Christophe Barbrand and Henri Weimerskirch attribute this later breeding activity to decrease in sea ice caused by climate change.
The researchers say the disappearing sea ice, combined with a longer sea?ice season, has interfered with the birds' breeding cycle by reducing the amount of krill (磷虾) and other prey (猎物) available in early spring in Antarctica. Because Antarctica's seasons are opposite those in the Northern Hemisphere, spring on the icy continent begins in October.
The study is based on data collected at seabird colonies between 1950 and 2004 in Adélie Land,on the eastern edge of the frozen continent.
The findings were published in the journal Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences.
Of the nine species studied, some arrived up to 30 days later than they had in previous years.
Despite much later arrivals, the birds are laying their eggs at pretty much the same time as they had in the past. In the most extreme cases, birds were laying their eggs an average of 3.7 days later in the season than they were 50 years ago.

Across the world, studies have consistently found that girls perform significantly better than boys in reading. These studies show that girls typically read more frequently than boys, and have a more positive attitude towards reading.
There are several reasons that help explain these gender?based differences. Parents read more with their daughters. This sends a strong and early message that books are for girls,as well as equipping girls with a significant advantage. Recent research has found even though boys read less frequently than girls, girls still receive more encouragement to read from their parents.
So how can parents and educators help bridge this socially engineered gap for boys' reading?
To improve boys' reading performance, parents and educators may look for ways to connect boys with reading. This has led to discussion about the importance of promoting so?called boy?friendly books that boys supposedly prefer. These are typically assumed to be non?fiction works,as many people believed that boys prefer to read non?fiction.
But this belief is not supported by recent research, which in fact suggests boys are more likely to choose to read fiction than non?fiction. Encouraging all boys to read non?fiction under the mistaken belief that it is their preference may actually be harmful. Fiction readers read more frequently and demonstrate faster language learning and higher language ability.
Besides encouraging more fiction reading, there are a number of ways that we can help connect boys with books. Firstly, don't assume that boys of the same age have the same interests or that their interests stay the same over time. To match boys with suitable reading material, have regular discussion about reading for pleasure in order to keep up with their interests.
Schools should also provide access to libraries during lessons throughout the years of schooling. Girls visit the library in their free time more than boys, and as students move to higher grades they often have less access to libraries during lessons. Access to books for boys is essential to promote reading.
In addition,we should keep paper books available because research shows that boys are less likely to choose to read on screens than girls. Finally we should promote reading as an enjoyable pastime by being a role model. Let your children or students see you read for pleasure.

Where should an adventurous tourist go? After you've done sightseeing in London, shopping in New York, tasted the local food in Paris, and danced to your heart's content at the Brazilian Carnival, where else can you go? What exotic(异国风情的) tourist destination awaits you?
Well,Antarctica sounds like the holiday of a lifetime! It's considered the last great wilderness on Earth. Just a few scientists in research stations share the icy landscape with penguins and other animals which can cope with the low temperatures.
Tourism began in Antarctica in the 1950s and it's still a small scale. About 37,000 tourists are expected there this season, but many won't even leave the boat.
The BBC's Juliet Rix visited the frozen continent and asked herself if she should be there at all, causing potential problems to such a sensitive environment. Her tour guide admitted that all visitors leave footprints and they all go to the same place, the accessible coastline, which is also where the penguins and seals go to breed.
But some people believe that if carefully controlled, tourism can be good for Antarctica. It has no native population and it needs advocates.Visitors to the icy continent might be ready to support and even to fund its preservation. And they're likely to engage in the discussion about global warming, which has led to the melting of glaciers.
According to Rix,guidelines are followed when you're about to set foot in Antarctica and tourists have to disinfect(为……消毒) their boots to make sure no alien species are introduced.
And once on land, there's no eating or smoking.Rocks, bone fragments— nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind.Tourists fortunate enough to visit Antarctica must be aware that this is not their home and keep their fingers crossed that future generations will also be able to enjoy such breath taking views.

1.According to the second paragraph,we can learn that________.
A.Antarctica has become the best place for people to travel
B.only scientists can be allowed to go to Antarctica
C.Antarctica is less affected by human activities
D.no animals can survive in Antarctica except penguins
根据第二段第二句“It's considered the last great wilderness on Earth.”
2.Juliet Rix's travel in Antarctica mentioned in the fourth paragraph indicates that________.
A.governments should take measures to stop tourists from going to Antarctica
B.whether tourists should go to Antarctica or not should be considered carefully
C.the animals' habitat in Antarctica has been seriously affected by tourism
D.only journalists begin to pay attention to the environmental protection in Antarctica

3.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to Rix?
A.Tourists can eat and smoke in Antarctica.
B.Tourists can take something they like from Antarctica.
C.Tourists can throw away something they don't need in Antarctica.
D.Tourists can enjoy the beautiful scenery in Antarctica.
根据最后一段中的“there's no eating or smoking.Rocks, bone fragments—nothing should be taken as a souvenir and nothing should be left behind.”可知,A、B、C三项的说法均与原文不符;根据文章结尾处“to enjoy such breathtaking views”可知,游客可以在南极洲欣赏到惊人的景色。

I'm an American?born Chinese. I wouldn't say I'm more American than Chinese or vice versa. My character was equally molded by both cultures. For a long time,I was comfortable with being from two cultures. I was fluent in “Chinglish”.
However,as I grew up,something unexpected rose, causing a parallel tension between the two corresponding cultures. During Chinese events when I was in China, the host would sometimes make fun of America. My relatives would look at me and laugh, asking me how I felt. But how could I respond to a question like that?If I said I was uncomfortable,it would just make me seem even more American in their eyes. But I couldn't pretend to laugh either. So, I often just stayed quiet and smiled.
Sometimes,I'd leave China feeling less Chinese than when I went in.
This past summer,on my way back to Rochester,a man at the airport kept asking my father and I where we were from. When I told him I was from the United States,he didn't seem to believe me.
He then went on to ask the terrible question,“But like where are you really from, like, where were you born?”And no matter how specific our answers were, the man still seemed a little doubtful. He then went on to ask us if we knew where Tampa,Florida was and if we knew anything about it. It's at moments like these when I realize that sometimes my appearance makes it hard for me to seem fully American.
These experiences made me question if I was more Chinese or American.
I felt like I was neither. So, if I wasn't completely one culture or the other, what was I?In China,I would feel more American, while in America,I would feel more Chinese. There was no balance between my two cultures.
But this doesn't mean that I don't embrace both my identities. I love both my Chinese cultural identity and my American one. I just need to learn to love them together.
5.How did the author feel about his identity at the very beginning?
A.Special. B.Confident.
C.Confused. D.Ridiculous.
根据第一段最后两句“For a long time,I was comfortable with being from two cultures. I was fluent in‘Chinglish’.”
6.Why did the author feel less Chinese when he left China?
A.Because he found it hard to remain quiet and have a big smile.
B.Because he was unable to speak fluent Chinese at his hometown.
C.Because he had lost face in front of his relatives and friends.
D.Because he was treated as an American by his Chinese relatives.
根据第二段第二、三句“During Chinese events when I was in China, the host would sometimes make fun of America. My relatives would look at me and laugh, asking me how I felt.”,并结合该段其他内容和第三段内容可知,在中国,人们会拿美国开玩笑,并问“我”的感受;据此可推知,在中国作者被他的亲戚看成美国人,所以在离开中国时他感觉自己不太像中国人,故D项正确。
7.What made the man at the airport keep questioning where the author was from?
A.His cultures. B.His experience.
C.His look. D.His air tickets.
根据第五段最后一句“It's at moments like these when I realize that sometimes my appearance makes it hard for me to seem fully American.”
8.What could be the best title of the passage?
A.Being Culturally Homeless
B.A Boy with Two Identities
C.A Chinese Boy Born in America

Since I was a kid, I've considered different job I would like to do.First,I wanted to be a fireman, whose uniform looked so coolly. Then, when I was in the five grade, I wanted to be a teacher because I liked my English teacher too much. When I studied chemistry high school, I reconsidered my goal or decided to be a doctor. They were two reasons for the decision. One was that I was amazing at the fact that a sick person could feel much more better after seeing a doctor. And the other is that I wanted to help people in need.
