泰国有“万象之国”的美称，大象是泰国的国宝，泰国人的守护神。
相传，佛祖释迦牟尼是在其母亲梦见白象后诞生的，泰国以佛教为国教，因而，视白象为镇国瑞兽，象征昌盛吉兆。而在战争中大象即是国王的坐骑，直至今天，寺庙高僧的坐骑仍是是大象。在曼谷卧佛寺中的佛案上，也有一座象雕是和佛祖供在一起被人祭拜的。
