A
It was a chilly November evening in New York City, and my daughter and I were walking up Broadway. Nora noticed a guy sitting inside a cardboard box next to a newsstand. She pulled at my coat sleeve and said, “That man's cold, Daddy. Can we take him home?”
I don't remember my reply, but I do remember a sudden heavy feeling inside me. I had always been delighted at how much my daughter noticed in her world, whether it was birds in flight or children playing. But now she was noticing suffering and poverty. She wasn’t even four.
A few days later, I saw an article in the newspaper about volunteers who delivered meals to elderly people. The volunteers went to a nearby school on a Sunday morning, picked up a food package, and delivered it to an elderly person. I signed us up. Nora was excited about it. She could understand the importance of food, so she could easily see how valuable our job was. When Sunday came, we picked up the package and phoned the elderly person we'd been assigned. She invited us right over.
The building was depressing. When the door opened, facing us was a silver-haired woman in an old dress. She took the package and asked if we would like to come in. Nora ran inside. I reluctantly followed. Our hostess showed us some photos of her family. Nora played and laughed. I accepted a second cup of tea. When it came time to say good-bye, we three stood in the doorway and hugged. I walked home in tears.
Where else but as volunteers do you have the opportunity to do something enjoyable that’s good for yourself as well as for others? Indeed, the poverty my daughter and I helped lessen that Sunday afternoon was not the woman's alone—it was in our lives, too. Now Nora and I regularly serve meals to needy people and collect clothes for the homeless. Yet, as I’ve watched her grow over these past four years, I still wonder which of us has benefited more?
1. What do you know about the man Nora noticed on that evening ?
A. He was asking for food. B. He was one of those homeless.
C. He was taken home by the author. D. He was buying a newspaper.
2. Why did the author have a sudden heavy feeling (para.2)?
A. Because his daughter had noticed the dark side of life.
B. Because he did not want to take the guy home.
C. Because he felt a deep sympathy for the guy.
D. Because his daughter was afraid of what she saw.
3. In what order did the story take place?
a. I happened to read a piece of writing about volunteers.
b. Nora found a man and wanted to help him.
c. We just not only help reduce the poverty of the woman, but also the poverty in our lives.
d. Unlike Nora, I entered the woman’s house unwillingly that Sunday afternoon.
e. We went to pick up the food package in the nearby school.
A. a-e-d-b-c B. a-b-e-d-c C. b-d-a-e-c D. b-a-e-d-c

A. The author and the old woman.
B. The giver and receiver of the help.
C. The author and his daughter.
D. The author and the guy in the box.

“The world's oceans are slowly getting more acidic,” say scientists. The researchers from California report that the change is taking place in response to higher levels of carbon dioxide in the atmosphere.
The lowering of the water's pH value is not great at the moment but could cause a serious threat to current ocean life if it continues, they warn. Ken Caldeira and Michael Wickett, from the Lawrence Livermore National Laboratory, report their concerns in the journal Nature.
Increasing use of oil fuels means more carbon dioxide is going into the air, and most of it will eventually be absorbed by seawater. Once in the water, it reacts to form carbonic acid. Scientists believe that the oceans have already become slightly more acidic over the last century.
These researchers have tried to predict what will happen in the future by combining what we know about the history of the oceans with computer models of climate change. “This level of acidity will get much more extreme in the future if we continue releasing CO2 into the atmosphere,” said Dr Caldeira. “And we predict the amount of future acidity will exceed anything we have seen over the last several hundred million years.”
However, it is not absolutely clear what that means for ocean life. Most organisms live near the surface, where the greatest pH change would be expected to occur, but deep-ocean life forms may be more sensitive to pH changes. Coral reefs(珊瑚礁) and other organisms whose shells contain calcium carbonate(碳酸钙) may be particularly affected if the water's acidity levels keep going up, the team predict. They could find it much more difficult to build these structures in water with a lower pH.
In recent years some people have suggested storing carbon dioxide from power stations in the deep ocean as a way of dealing with global warming. But Dr Caldeira said that such a strategy should now be reconsidered.
“Previously, most experts had looked at ocean absorption of carbon dioxide as a good thing—because in releasing CO2 into the atmosphere we warm the planet, and when CO2 is absorbed by the ocean, it reduces the amount of greenhouse warming.”
6.The ocean is becoming more acidic due to ????.
A. the lower water pH value B. the warming atmosphere
C. the higher level of CO2 in the air D. the increasing use of oil fuels
7.According to Dr Caldeira, ????.
A. ocean absorption of carbon dioxide is a good thing
B. more oil fuels will be used in the near future
C. scientists may predict climate changes with computer models
D. the future situation of the amount of acidity is extremely serious
8.If the water's acidity level keeps rising, ????.
A. ocean life whose structures contain calcium carbonate may be affected
B. the water's pH value will become higher and higher
C. organisms living near the surface are more sensitive to pH changes
D. some disasters will occur more often than before
9.What does the underlined word “acidic” probably mean?
A.污染的 B.酸的 C.复杂的 D.温暖的
5.The purpose of this passage is to ????.
A .show people the findings of a research team
B. inform people of how acid the ocean is now
C. introduce Dr Caldeira and his team's research
D. warn people of the higher acidity level in the sea

Today there are many more fires than in the past. Over 100,000 wildfires burn each year in America. Russia has 20,000 to 35,000 wildfires every year. Australia has on average 60,000 each year. These fires destroy (破坏) huge areas of forests and burn hundreds of homes.
There are several reasons for this sudden increase in fires. The first reason is climate change. Recent weather has been warmer and drier. This leads to dangerous fire conditions. When lightning happens, dry grass easily catches fire. Hot winds add to the problem. The wind spreads a fire quickly. In 2010, Russia had the hottest and driest summer in a century. In just one month, 500 fires destroyed over 2,000 homes. Some people lost their lives. Traditional fire-fighting practices are another reason for the increase in fires. In America, firefighters used to quickly put out every fire. They didn't allow the grass and trees to burn. As a result, today many forests have thicker vegetation. Thicker vegetation means more fuel (燃料) for fires. Also, without fires from time to time, forests become overcrowded and unhealthy. Some trees are dead. The dead wood then easily catches fire. So surprisingly, America has many more fires today partly because of its past fire-fighting practices.
Scientists now understand that a fire can be a natural part of a healthy forest. As a result, countries like Australia allow more fires to burn naturally. Sometimes, firefighters even start fires to get rid of (去除) dead wood. Of course, they carefully control the fires. The fire thins out old trees. This allows sunlight to reach the ground. As a
result, fires help new trees to grow. Therefore, if a fire is not seriously dangerous to people, firefighters may let
it burn naturally.
11. ???? has the least wildfires each year.
A. The UK B. Australia C. The US D. Russia
12.Russia had so many fires in one month in 2010 because ????.
A. lightning helped to spread the fire
B .the wind helped to spread the fire
C. there were not enough firefighters
D.it was unusually hot and dry
13.The underlined word “vegetation” in Paragraph 3 means ???? in Chinese.
A.蔬菜 B.树木 C.植被 D.花草
14.From Paragraph 4 we can know that ????.
A .the more fires, the better for forests
B. some fires are good for the forest
C. all the fires must be put out
D. Australian firefighters can't control fires
15.The best title for the passage is ????.
A. The Reasons for Wildfires B. How to Control Wildfires
C. Wildfires in Different Countries D. The Results of Wildfires

What can people do when natural disasters (灾难) happen? Can we stop them? No, we can’t. The only thing we can do is to clean up after the disasters.
Last year I met Mr. Flood. It started raining and 1 raining almost a month: the water on the streets got higher and higher every day. We used 2 instead of cars. We lost lots of things, including our businesses, our jobs and our homes. Schools 3 and farms were destroyed. We ran out of food and clean water. In some places the water was higher than the buildings. I felt like we lived in a(n) 4 world.
Because of the flood, lots of 5 broke out. Some people died. The soil and other things made the water become very, very 6 . That was in summer time, so though it was raining, the 7 was still high. The hot weather and dirty water made the air very bad. Hospitals didn’t have enough rooms for 8 .
When the flood was over, I looked around my city. The word “ 9 ” can describe the situation. Everything was destroyed and lots of people were sick, but we were very strong, I think. We had to 10 our city, take care of the sick people, and start our schools again. I just hope that one day, people can stop the natural disasters whenever they happen.
