In Canada and the United States, people enjoy entertaining (招待) at home. They often invite friends over for a meal, a party, or just for a coffee and conversation. Here are the kinds of things people say when they invite someone to their home:
“Would you like to come over for dinner Saturday night?”
“Hey, we’re having a party on Friday. Can you come?”
To reply to an invitation, either say thank you and accept, or say you’re sorry, and give an excuse: “Thanks, I’d love to. What time would you like me to come?” or “Oh, sorry, I’ve tickets for a movie.”
Sometimes, however, people use expressions (表达) that sound like invitations but which are not real invitations. For example: “Please come over for a drink sometime.” “Why not get together for a party sometime?” “Why don’t you come over and see us sometime soon?”
They are really just polite ways of ending a conversation. They are not real invitations because they don’t mention a specific (确定) time or date. They just show that the person is trying to be friendly. To reply to expressions like these, people just say “Sure, that would be great!” or “Ok, yes, thanks.”
So next time when you hear what sounds like an invitation, listen carefully: Is it a real invitation or is the person just being friendly?
26. Why do Canadians and Americans often invite friends for meals at home?

D. “If you are free, let’s go for a dinner sometime.”
28. If people say “Let’s get together for lunch someday.”, you just say “_________”
A. How about this weekend? B. That would be nice.

Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat.
Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power source , as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows
that windmills (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first
introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of
using wind power.
For many centuries, people used windmills to grind (磨碎) wheat into flour or pump water from deep
underground. When electricity was discovered in the late 1800s, people living in remote areas began to use
them to produce electricity. This allowed them to have electric lights and radio. However, by the 1940s
when electricity was available to people in almost all areas of the United States, windmills were rarely used.
During the 1970s, people started becoming concerned about the pollution that is created when coal and
gas are burned to produce electricity. People also realized that the supply of coal and gas would not last
forever. Then, wind was rediscovered, though it means higher coasts. Today, there is a global movement
to supply more and more of our electricity through the use of wind.
36. From the text we know that windmills _____.
A. were invented by European armies
B. have a history of more than 2800 years

A. wind power is cleaner
B. it is one of the oldest power sources
C. it was cheaper to create energy from wind
D. the supply of coal and gas failed to meet needs
39.The passage is mainly about .
A. the global pollution from burning coal and gas
C. the history of using wind power
B. the worldwide movement to save energy
D. the advantages of windmills
40. What would the author probably discuss in the paragraph that follows?
A. The advantage of wind power.

Electricity is widely used in our daily lives. When you go to work in the morning and find that traffic lights don’t work, the traffic jam will certainly happen. A patient needs to be operated on at once. What will happen if the operation cannot be made because of the electricity?
Without electricity, we can neither watch TV, listen to the tape, nor chat on line. Electricity is closely related to our daily lives.
How terrible it would be if there were no electricity! Electricity is very important to us. We should try our best to save electricity. Then how can we save electricity?
First, we must turn off the lights and other Electrical appliances when we don’t use them, second, we can use saving-energy electrical appliances. Most importantly, we should treat it as our duty and call on everyone to act it out.

Ray Charles, a black singer and pianist of the USA. He had won 12 Grammy Awards (格莱美奖) and performed at 10,000 concerts around the world. Many musicians called him simply “the Genius” (天才).
Ray Charles was born into a poor family, without a father. When he was 5 years old, his younger brother died, and around the same time, Charles started to lose his sight. By the age of 7 he was completely blind. He had already been learning the piano for a year, and when he went blind, his mother knew this would be the only way he would make any money in the future. Later he went to a school for blind and deaf children. There the teachers also encouraged him to study music. Sadly, while he was still at school, his mother died. He left school and in the early 1950s Charles organized a group of players. He sang, played the piano and wrote music.
He made many classical CDs wit h famous artists such as Elton John and the Beatles.
In 2003 a film of his life Ray was made. The part of Charles was played by a younger actor and musician called Jamie Foxx. The film director brought Foxx to meet Charles. After they had been playing together for two hours, Charles, then aged 73, jumped up and said: “He’s the one ... he can do it.” A year later Charles died aged 74. Think about the different ways that people use the wind. You can use it to fly a kite or to sail a boat.
Wind is one of our cleanest and richest power source , as well as one of the oldest. Evidence shows
that windmills (风车) began to be used in ancient Iran back in the seventh century BC. They were first
introduced to Europe during the 1100s, when armies returned from the Middle East with knowledge of
using wind power.
