Edward rose early on the New?year morning. He looked in every room and wished a Happy New Year to his family. Then he ran into the street to repeat that to those he might meet.
When he came back, his father gave him two bright, new silver dollars.
His face lighted up as he took them. He had wished for a long time to buy some pretty books that he had seen at the bookstore.
He left the house with a light heart, expecting to buy the books. As he ran down the street, he saw a poor family.
“I wish you a Happy New Year,” said Edward, as he was passing on. The man shook his head.
“You are not from this country,” said Edward. The man again shook his head, for he could not understand or speak his language. But he pointed to his mouth and to the children shaking with cold, as if (好像) to say,“These little ones have had nothing to eat for a long time. ”
Edward quickly understood that these poor people were in trouble. He took out his dollars, and gave one to the man, and the other to his wife. They were excited and said something in their language, which doubtless meant,“We thank you so much that we will remember you all the time. ”
When Edward came home, his father asked what books he had bought. He hung his head a moment, but quickly looked up.
“I have bought no books,” said he, “I gave my money to some poor people, who seemed to be very hungry then. ” He went on, “I think I can wait for my books till next New Year. ”
“My dear boy,” said his father, “here are some books for you, more as a prize for your goodness of heart than as a New?year gift. ”
“I saw you give the money cheerfully to the poor German family. It was nice for a little boy to do so. Be always ready to help others and every year of your life will be to you a Happy New Year. ”

Reading makes one wise, but many adults seldom read. They say they are too busy to have time to read. Sure. They have work to do. They have families to support. But these are only excuses. The fact is that they haven't got a reading habit. A reading habit isn't something natural.
It needs to be trained. And it's never too late to develop a reading habit.
Scientists believe proper books are very important for children to develop a good reading habit. A book in rich colors and with simple patterns(图案) such as lines and circles is a good choice for babies of three months old. When they reach six months, they will become interested in simple storybooks in rich colors.
When children get old enough to read by themselves, it's necessary to buy books that are both interesting and right for them to understand. Books which are either too easy or too difficult are not good for kids to keep their reading habits.
Only buying books for children isn't enough. For kids, parents are their first teachers. So parents should read books to set an example. Children will follow them. Scientists say imitating the adults is a born skill. And it is the most valuable way for children to learn. This will certainly help them develop a reading habit in the end.
( )49. According to the writer, many adults seldom read because they____.
A. don't have enough time
B. have to work all the time
C. haven't got a reading habit
D. have to support the family
( )50. The underlined word “imitating” probably means ____.
A. copying B. reading
C. testing D. missing
( )51. We can learn from the passage that____.
A. storybooks are better than books in colors
B. a reading habit comes from certain training
C. a three?month?old kid likes simple stories
D. too easy books help keep a reading habit
D
This is a tale of two friends — one is blind, and the other has no arms. On their own, the two are “disabled”. But together, they are a powerful team that has changed part of their village in North China's Hebei Province into a rich, green forest. Meet 53?year?old Jia Haixia and Jia Wenqi!
Their story began in 2000, when Haixia, who was already blind in his right eye, lost his left one after an illness. Wenqi lost his arms in an accident when he was just three. Neither could find a job, so the two decided to team up. They rented some poor land and began to plant trees. In return, the local officials paid them a small fee.
Haixia and Wenqi never imagined that they would end up creating an environmental paradise. Their forest now has over 10,000 trees, hundreds of birds and many other wild animals. In addition, it saves the village from river flooding during the rainy season.
When the friends work together, they focus on their strengths not their disabilities. Their day begins at 7 a. m. when sightless Haixia carries Wenqi across the river to get to their workplace. Since they cannot afford to buy young trees to plant, the two use branches from existing trees. Haixia climbs to the top of the tree and with Wenqi's direction, selects the perfect branch. He then digs a hole and carefully plants it. Finally Wenqi waters the area.
Though hard?working, the men don't make much money. But as Wenqi puts it, “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter. ”
Neither Haixia nor Wenqi cares about money. Together, they already have everything they need — a perfect pair of eyes, two strong hands, and the best friendship in the world!
( )52. Why did Haixia and Wenqi start working together?
A. Haixia needed someone to help him.
B. They both needed a way to make money.
C. They wanted to improve the environment.
D. They were required to do so by local officials.
( )53. Haixia and Wenqi's forest has helped the village by____.
A. stopping floods in the rainy season
B. increasing the number of tourists
C. making the villagers richer
D. providing more farmland
( )54. Why do Haixia and Wenqi plant tree branches?
A. They are easy to get.
B. They do not cost money.
C. They can grow very quickly.
D. They are preferred by animals.
( )55. In Paragraph 5, when Wenqi says “We stand on our own feet, so the fruits of our work taste sweeter”, he means that “____”.
A. they hope to make the forest even better
B. the fruits from their trees are very sweet
C. they are proud not to depend on others

When other children laughed at him, I stopped them and said, “Oh, books are good in that way. The story is always new if you have not read it before. Now, let's share one together. ” Everyone listened quietly as I read the most wonderful Christmas story of my life.

How to Deal with the Exam Stress
Everyone may have the exam stress. A little bit of stress can be a good thing to us. If we have proper stress, we can think actively and work harder. Besides, it can remind us to review our lessons in time to remember them. So we can pass the exams easily.
However, if we have too heavy stress, we can't sleep well at night and we may feel too tired. We may fear the exams too much and fail in the end.
In my opinion, to deal with stress, we'd better plan and prepare well. We should also form some good habits, such as enough exercise and healthy diets. Then we'll feel relaxed and do well in the exams.
