On 7th February 1812, Charles Dickens was born in Portsmouth. The Dickens family never had much money. Charles had seven brothers and sisters. In 1816, the family moved to Norfolk Street, Fitzrovia. Charles was happy there because he started to go to school.
In 1822 the family moved to Camden Town in London. Charles still stayed there because he had to finish his final term of work. Mr Dickens was forced into the prison(监狱) for not paying his bills(账单). Later Charles had to work in a dirty old factory. Charles never forgot the unhappy time. He wrote about it later.
Later, Mr Dickens sent Charles to the Wellington House Academy. There he spent about two years. But he didn't think it to be a good school. At 15, Charles got a job in a lawyer's office. During that time, Charles learned shorthand(速记). Then he became a reporter. He travelled around England, writing for newspapers. He wrote stories about the people he met. In 1836, he published(出版) his first collection of pieces. After that he wrote some famous stories. One of them is Oliver Twist, a story of a poor boy in Victorian times. Books by Dickens can be funny and sad. His stories are full of interesting people. Nowadays people all over the world still enjoy his stories.
