Across Britain, burnt toast will be served to mothers in bed this morning as older sons and daughters rush to deliver their supermarket bunches of flowers. But,according to a new study,we should be placing a higher value on motherhood all year.
Mothers have long known that their home workload was just as heavy as paid work. Now,the new study has shown that if they were paid for their parental labours, they would earn as much as £172,000 a year.
The study looked at the range of jobs mothers do,as well as the hours they are working,to determine the figure. This would make their yearly income £30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns.
By analysing the numbers,it found the average mother works 119 hours a week,40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime. After questioning 1,000 mothers with children under 18,it found that,on most days, mums started their routine work at 7am and finished at around 11pm.
To calculate just how much mothers would earn from that labour,it suggested some of the roles that mums could take on,including housekeeper, part?time lawyer, personal trainer and entertainer. Being a part?time lawyer,at £48.98 an hour, would prove to be the most profitable of the “mum jobs”,with psychologist (心理学家) a close second.
It also asked mothers about the challenges they face, with 80 percent making emotional (情感的) demand as the hardest thing about motherhood.
Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends.
The study shows mothers matter all year long and not just on Mother's Day.The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never?ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness.Investing (投入) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.
21.How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?
A.£30,000. B.£142,000.
C.£172,000. D.£202,000.
22.The biggest challenge for most mothers is from ________.
A.emotional demand B.low pay for work

23.What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A.Mothers' importance shows in family all year long.
B.The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.
C.Mothers' devotion to children can hardly be calculated.
D.Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.
24.What can we conclude from the study?
A.Mothers' working hours should be largely reduced.
B.Mothers should balance their time for work and rest.
C.Mothers' labour is of a higher value than it is realised.
D.Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.

Memory, they say,is a matter of practice and exercise. If you have the wish and really make a conscious effort, then you can quite easily improve your ability to remember things. But even if you are successful, there are times when your memory seems to play tricks on you.
Sometimes you remember things that really did not happen. One morning last week, for example,I got up and found that I had left the front door unlocked all night, yet I clearly remembered locking it carefully the night before.
Memory“tricks”work the other way as well.Once in a while you remember not doing something and then find out that you did.One day last month, for example,I was sitting in a barbershop waiting for my turn to get a haircut, and suddenly I realized that I had got a haircut two days before at the barbershop across the street from my office.
We always seem to find something funny and amusing in incidents caused by people's forgetfulness or absent?mindedness.Stories about absent?minded professors have been told for years, and we never get tired of hearing new ones.Unfortunately, however, absent?mindedness is not always funny. There are times when “tricks” of our memory can cause us great trouble.
25.If you want to have a good memory, you should________.
A.force yourself to remember things
B.make a conscious effort of practice and exercise
C.never stop learning
D.try hard to remember things
26.Which of the following statements is TRUE according to the passage?
A.One night the writer forgot to lock the front door.
B.One night the writer forgot having locked the front door.

D.The writer remembered unlocking the front door.
27.What can we infer from the last paragraph?
A.Absent?mindedness stories can bring people fun.
B.Absent?mindedness is more troublesome than forgetfulness.
C.Absent?minded professors are often amused by the incidents, too.
D.Absent?mindedness happens not only to professors but to all other people.
28.Which of the following could be the best title for this passage?
A.The Key to a Good Memory
B.“Tricks”of Memory
C.The Dangers of Forgetfulness
D.The Dangers of Absent?mindedness

Barack Obama knows what it means when a family struggles. He knows what it means to want something more for your kids and grandkids.
Barack knows the American Dream because he has lived it...and he wants everyone in this country to have the same opportunity,no matter who we are,or where we're from,or what we look like,or who we love.
When people ask me whether being in the White House has changed my husband,I can honestly say that when it comes to his character and his heart,Barack Obama is still the same man I fell in love with all those years ago.
That's the man I see in those quiet moments late at night, reading the letters people have sent him—the letter from the father struggling to pay his bills...from the woman dying of cancer whose insurance company won't cover her care ...from the young person with so much promise but so few opportunities.
I see the concern in his eyes and I hear the determination in his voice as he tells me,“You won't believe what these folks are going through,Michelle ...It's not right. We've got to keep working to fix this. We've got so much more to do.”I love that he's never forgotten how he started.
I love that we can trust Barack to do what he says he's going to do,even it's hard—especially when it's hard.
And I love that even in the toughest moments, when we're all sweating it—when we're worried that the bill won't pass, and it seems like all is lost—Barack never lets himself get discouraged by the chatter and the noise.
Just like his grandmother,he just keeps getting up and moving forward with patience and wisdom, and courage and grace.
And he reminds me that we are playing a long game here and that change is hard and slow, and it never happens all at once.
But finally we get there, and we will always do.
29.Why does the author say Barack Obama knows the American Dream?
A.Because he has dreamed the American Dream.
B.Because he comes from a struggling family.
C.Because he has realized his American Dream.
D.Because he is good at grasping opportunities.
30.Which of the following is true about the woman dying of cancer?
A.She wants to know the final decision.
B.She doesn't have a care in the world.
C.Her insurance company won't care for her.
D.Her insurance company refuses to pay for her.
31.According to the passage, which of the following best describes Barack Obama?
A.He is very strict about the observance of the rules.
B.He is advancing bravely and never withdrawing.
C.He hopes that change happens all at once.
D.He used to be under the care of his grandmother.
D
Men playing female roles in stage performances can be dated back to Ancient Rome and were widely seen in Shakespeare's plays. Well, that phenomenon is not exclusive (独有的) to the west.In traditional Chinese operas, such as Peking Opera, many female characters are performed by male actors.
Li Yugang is one of the most popular actors currently singing and performing in_drag on stage in China. He is one of the two Chinese singers to successfully hold their own concerts in the Sydney Opera House.
In 2005,his performance in Europe drew lots of attention. The European Times featured him on the first page, declaring that he had brought Opera art out of China. But his golden time was still to come.
Li Yugang was born in a village in Jilin Province in North China. He loved performing even when he was little. At the age of 17,he was given an offer by an art college. He chose to work as a waiter in a nightclub in Changchun, the capital city of Jilin Province, because his family was too poor to afford his study. He started his new life with a small suitcase and 200 yuan or 25 US dollars. That was all he had to his name.
One accident changed his life, forever.During an important show,a female singer was absent.Li Yugang proposed to the boss that he could finish the show for her.Everyone had their doubts. It was a formal show, not some silly drama.Could Li sing two roles? The result couldn't have been better. From that point on,people flocked to see his performances.Li Yugang gradually found his confidence and discovered the huge market potential of female impersonation (扮演).
In 2006,Li Yugang participated in a national TV singing contest. When the pretty woman on stage turned into a handsome young man,the audience went wild. They had rarely seen a show like that before, especially outside of opera theatres.
As he attained national attention,he became the talk of the town, for both praise and criticism.Artistically,Li Yugang is far less skilled than some female impersonators in Peking Opera art circles. Many professional opera actors disapprove of Li for using Peking Opera to glorify his pop culture performances. However,I always think if young people can learn more about Peking Opera from Li Yugang's mixture of the traditional and pop culture; it shouldn't necessarily be a bad thing.
32.The passage is mainly about Li Yugang's________.
A.tradition and culture B.success and hardship
C.success and culture D.tradition and necessity
33.What do the underlined words “in drag” in Paragraph 2 probably mean?
A.in women's clothes B.in men's clothes
C.in shabby clothes D.in splendid clothes
34.We can infer from the sixth paragraph________.
A.a male singer completed his national contest
B.a pretty woman on stage attracted the audience
C.a handsome young man went wild on stage
D.the audience was deeply shocked
35.The author's attitude towards Li Yugang is________.
A.positive B.unfavorable
C.critical D.doubtful

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Public Speaking and Critical Thinking
What is critical thinking? To a certain degree,it's a matter of logic(逻辑)—of being able to spot weaknesses in other people's arguments and to avoid them in your own.It also includes related skills such as distinguishing fact from opinion and assessing the soundness of evidence.
In the broad sense, critical thinking is focused, organized thinking—the ability to see clearly the relationships among ideas.__36__The greatest thinkers, scientists, and inventors have often taken information that was readily available and put it together differently to produce new ideas. That, too,is critical thinking.
__37__As the class goes on,for example, you will probably spend a good deal of time organizing your speeches. While this may seem like a purely mechanical (机械的) exercise,it is closely connected with critical thinking. If the structure of your speech is loose and confused, chances are that your thinking is also disordered and confused. If,on the other hand, the structure is clear, there is a good chance your thinking is too.Organizing a speech is not just a matter of arranging the ideas you already have.__38__
What is true of organization is true of many aspects of public speaking.__39__As you work on expressing your ideas in clear, accurate language, you will improve your ability to think clearly and accurately.__40__As you learn to listen critically to speeches in class, you will be better able to assess the ideas of speakers in a variety of situations.
If you take full advantage of your speech class, you will be able to develop your skills as a critical thinker in many circumstances. This is one reason public speaking has been regarded as a vital part of education since the days of ancient Greece.
A.Rather,it is an important part of shaping the ideas themselves.
B.This may seem like a lot of time, but the rewards are well worth it.
C.It may also help you to know that there is no such thing as a perfect speech.
D.It has often been said that there are few new ideas in the world, only reorganized ideas.
E.If you are wondering what has to do with your public speaking class, the answer is quite a lot.
F.The skills you learn in your speech class can help you become a more effective thinker in a number of ways.
G.As you study the role of evidence and reasoning in speechmaking, you will see how they can be used in other forms of communication as well.

【语篇解读】 本文是一篇说明文。文章介绍了母亲们为孩子和家庭付出的辛苦。当然,文章也指出在母亲们为家庭付出的同时她们也收获了孩子带来的快乐和幸福。
21.How much would a mother earn a year if working as the Prime Minister?
A.£30,000. B.£142,000.
C.£172,000. D.£202,000.
解析:选B。推理计算题。根据第二段最后一句中的they would earn as much as £172,000 a year可以得知母亲们一年可赚£172,000;而根据文章第三段第二句This would make their yearly income £30,000 more than the Prime Minister earns.可以得知她们比首相多赚£30,000;把两者相减即可得出首相的年薪,也就是£142,000。
22.The biggest challenge for most mothers is from ________.
A.emotional demand B.low pay for work
C.heavy workload D.lack of training
解析:选A。细节理解题。根据第六段中的...with 80 percent making emotional(情感的)demand as the hardest thing about motherhood.可以得知,大多数的母亲在情感方面的需要是她们面临的最大挑战。
23.What is stressed in the last paragraph?
A.Mothers' importance shows in family all year long.
B.The sacrifices mothers make are huge but worthwhile.
C.Mothers' devotion to children can hardly be calculated.
D.Investing time in parenting would bring a financial return.
解析:选B。推理判断题。根据最后一段的最后两句The emotional, physical and mental energy mothers devote to their children can be never?ending, but children are also sources of great joy and happiness.Investing (投入) in time for parenting and raising relationships is money well spent.可以得知,母亲们对孩子的付出是无止境的,但是孩子也是母亲们快乐和幸福的源泉,因此母亲们的牺牲虽然巨大,但是值得,故正确答案为B项。
24.What can we conclude from the study?
A.Mothers' working hours should be largely reduced.
B.Mothers should balance their time for work and rest.
C.Mothers' labour is of a higher value than it is realised.
D.Mothers should be freed from housework for social life.
解析:选C。推理判断题。根据第四段的第一句By analysing the numbers,it found the average mother works 119 hours a week,40 of which would usually be paid at a standard rate and 79 hours as overtime.可以得知母亲们工作的时间长,但文中并没有提到她们的工作时间应该被大大缩短,此处列举的数字是为下面估算母亲的工作价值打基础,所以排除A项;B项是对文章的倒数第二段Over a third of mums felt they needed more training and around half said they missed going out with friends.的错误理解,所以应该被排除;由全文尤其是第五段的内容可知,母亲们的价值远远高于社会所认识到的,所以C项正确;D项在文中并没有提及。
B

Men playing female roles in stage performances can be dated back to Ancient Rome and were widely seen in Shakespeare's plays.Well, that phenomenon is not exclusive (独有的) to the west.In traditional Chinese operas, such as Peking Opera, many female characters are performed by male actors.

One possible version:
Dear Shirley,
I am so glad to hear from you. Knowing that you are going to attend a painting contest,I am so happy and proud of you.
I understand that you are worried about your disability, but in my eyes it cannot prevent you from attending such a contest. Since this contest is to provide the chance equally for everyone who is good at painting, you can also show yourself in it.
Several days ago,I met a disabled man who had lost hands in an accident. He was repairing bicycles with his feet.If I hadn't seen that with my own eyes,I would not have believed it.
Remember that you are equal to others and that whatever the ordinary people can do,you can also do it very well.
Look forward to your early reply and your good news.
Yours,
Li Hua
