Para.3: The tall man stared at me, and then nodded, “I’m Mort Robin. What’s your name?”

Possible version 1
Paragraph 1
The only person I could think of was Mort. Without hesitation, I headed for the store in a hurry, knocked at the door and then waited anxiously. After a while, the door opened and there stood Mort, confused. Before he could ask me anything, I poured out what my family was facing. “So, could you possibly loan my father $325?” I finished, realizing how absurd it sounded. I could feel my face flushed deeply. Beyond my expectation, he turned around, returned with $325 in an envelope and handed it to me directly, saying “I’ll take back half your wages until it is repaid.” “Thank you,” I said in a trembling voice, trying to fight back my tears. Then I hurried back home.
Possible version 1
Paragraph 2
I calmly handed the man the money. “Count it, give my father a receipt and get out of our house,” I said, a speech I’d rehearsed all the way home. That night I was a hero to my family. But the real hero was Mort Robin, who not only saved us from poverty, but also quietly raised my salary every month. By summer, I was earning $2.50 an hour, double the original wage. Finally, I paid off the debt. It was Mr. Robin who made the world a better place for me.
评点:原文对人物语言的描写较单调,体现不出人物当时的状态和情绪。分词状语、介词短语等的添加使得人物的情绪更加的饱满,生动地描绘了“我”在说话时的忐忑还有感激的心情。
Possible version 2
Paragraph 1
The only person I could think of was Mort. Then I hurried to the store immediately. Standing in front of the door, I hesitated, thinking it was really absurd to ask for such a large amount of money. But I had no choice but to pluck up the courage to knock at the door. After what seemed ages of waiting, the door opened. In front of me stood Mort with a questioning look. “Umm, would you... would you please lend me $325?” I asked and told him what happened to my family. I could feel my hands sweating. Without saying anything, Mort lent me the money. Worried about my safety, he accompanied me back home. Together we went into the room and stood before the man. With Mort standing beside me, I became more courageous.
Possible version 2
Paragraph 2
I calmly handed the man the money. “Now, get out of here!” Mort exclaimed. After the man left, I explained the whole thing to my family. My father held Mort’s hands firmly, thanked him and promised to return the money as soon as he could. That night Mort became the real hero of my family. Because of his generosity and kindness, we not only kept our car but also paid off the debt. It was Mort Robin who made the world a better place for me.
评点:文中运用 “ask” “tell” “exclaim” “explain” “thank” “promise”不同的dialogue tags来取代say,使文章语言更加丰富,表述更加准确。
