I can know whether someone is lying or not by looking through his/her eyes.
When I catch a cold, my nose will also be congested.
It is very easy for me to get carsick or seasick.
It is said that the new-born baby needs body’s warmth and contact.

The sixth sense
A sixth sense
During one English dictation ,Simon wanted to find the answer from his English book secretly. Suddenly he felt someone was looking at him. He looked up and found out that the teacher was really staring at him.
You were standing in a crowd, and you didn’t hear anybody was calling you. But you feel that someone was watching you. You looked around quickly, and found that you were right. A friend, a short distance from you , was waving and staring at you.
---The ability to know someone was watching you
Step 1 Do a prediction

What is she doing?
She is blowing a whistle.
A blind fold.

To show the sixth sense is true.
What were they probably doing?
Perhaps they were doing experiments?
Why were they doing experiments?
To prove the sixth sense.
Is the girl behind looking at the girl in front?
No, she isn’t.
Is it random or regular for the girl to look away?
It is random.

Read through the passage and divide them into 3 parts.

Scientist discovers a sixth sense
As we all know, there are five
senses: hearing, smell, sight, taste and touch. Now, however, a scientist has shown that we have a sixth sense: the ability to know when someone is watching us.

Part 1 (para1-2)
Read and answer some questions
2. What is the sixth sense?
1. What are the five senses?
3. What is the scientist’s opinion?
Hearing, smell, sight, taste and touch.
The ability to know when some one is watching us.
We have a sixth sense.
Many people have noticed this feeling. For example, you are sitting in a cinema, and you feel that someone is watching you. You look around quickly, and find that you are right. A friend, at the back of the cinema, is staring at you.
Part 2 (para2-5)
Supporting detail 1 ---the feeling of many people
Until now, no one has been able to prove scientifically that people really do have this
ability. But recently a scientist called Dr
Rupert Sheldrake has announced the results
of some new experiments.
Supporting detail2 ---Dr. Sheldrake’s experiment
Up to now
carefully and logically
Up to now, no body has shown carefully or logically if people really have the sixth sense.
A. told many persons
B. told a person
Is Dr Sheldrake the first scientist to show that people have a sixth sense?
Up to now, it is not clear if people really have the sixth sense.
The experiments work in this way. Imagine two girls, Emma and Claire. Emma sits on a chair and wears a blindfold over her eyes, so she cannot see. Claire sits a few metres behind Emma. A teacher blows a whistle. Then in random order, Claire either looks at Emma, or
she looks in a different direction.
Emma must say if Claire is
looking at her or not. The
experiment is repeated 20
times.

looking at her
Claire sits a few metres _____Emma;

Dr Sheldrake repeated this simple experiment with hundreds of children. The results were that the person who was wearing the blindfold, like Emma, could often feel that the other person was watching him or her. Generally, the children knew about 60% of the
time they were being watched.
If the children were just
guessing ‘yes’ or ‘no’, the result
would only be 50%.
did… again and again

Supporting detail 3---the repeat of the experiment
1. What were the results?
The results were that(subject + verb + object)….
2. If they were being watched for 100 times, how many times can they feel?
60 times.
3. According to Dr.Sheldrake, the result is always _____ accurate than guessing.
A. more
B. less
Some scientists say they do not agree that there is a sixth sense. They say it is impossible to feel something in this way. But Dr Sheldrake says that the results are accurate. ‘These experiments were carried out by different people in different countries,’ he said, ‘and yet they all showed almost the same results.’
Part 3 (para 6)
A .right
B. wrong
done/
performed
but
Does all scientists agree with Dr Sheldrake?
Were all experiments carried out by Dr.Sheldrake?
Let’s have a test!
Do you agree with Dr. Sheldrake’s opinion?
Do our experiment
S1,come and stand here, please. Put the blindfold over your eyes.
S2, go and stand behind S1, when S3 blows the whistle, you MUST look at S1 or look away until you hear the next whistle.
S3, start the experiment and blow a next whistle after hearing yes/no.
Each group has 2 minutes in total.
Other students must be quiet! Write T/F to each answer!
After hearing the whistle ,you must say yes or no.
Start !
Time up!

Duration:

Are the results similar to Dr. Sheldrake’ results?
Why or why not?
The following things may influence the results:
The environment
The tested students
The testing duration

So that is why Dr. Sheldrake has carried out this experiment with different people in different countries for hundreds of times.
What do you think of Dr. sheldrake? why?
There is no royal roads to science and only those who do not dread the fatiguing climb of gaining its numinous summits.(Karl Marx, German revolutionary)
在科学上没有平坦的大道,只有不畏劳苦沿着其崎岖之路攀登的人,才有希望达到他光辉的顶点.(德国革命家 马克思.K.)
Assignment
1. Read the whole article fluently;
2. Recite the new words;
3. Find more examples about a sixth sense.
A woman who says that her intuition prevented each of her five children from serious accidents. Once she awoke in the middle of the night and felt the need to check on her son Paul, who was three years old at the time. He wasn’t in his bed, so she ran down the stairs to find him. She found him outside, sleepwalking, headed straight toward a flight of steps(一组陡峭的楼梯). Then again, there was a time when one of her daughters fell off a horse and broke her arm. The child neither cried nor yelled for help. But the mother, sensing that something was wrong, came out of the house and found her in a field just minutes after the accident. How did she know "Just a feeling," she said, "that something was wrong. "
A mother’s intuition
Abraham Lincoln’s dream
We all know that the 16th president of the USA: Abraham Lincoln was assassinated (暗杀) on April.4 in 1865, but he had foreseen he was going to die three days before. On the evening of April.1st, he dreamed that a lot of people were crying on the corridor (走廊)of the White House, and he asked some soldiers what happened . The soldier answered that the president was assassinated. After waking up, he told his dream to his wife. Sadly ,the dream came into the reality three days later.
Titanic
A business man named Jolio Quina, had also foreknown the sinking of Titanic. So he gave up the precious ticket---a ticket of Titanic’s first voyage.
Some persons asked him with puzzles, but he said he had a bad dream and saw the sinking of Titanic. Many people thought it was funny ,because Titanic was the largest and the most luxurious(奢华) ship at that time, which was known as the ”unsinkable”ship .But Jolio Quina believed his feeling ,which saved himself from the disaster later.
