阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C和D四个选项中,选出最佳选项
A
It's
a
little
hard
to
figure
out
the
rules
for
sure,
but
the
baby
African
buffalo(水牛)
seems
to
have
the
upper
hand.
The
two
stand
a
couple
feet
apart,
staring
at
each
other.
Behind
them,
their
mothers
look
on
with
the
kind
of
indifference(不关心)
of
mothers
everywhere
who
see
their
kids
playing
a
harmless
game.
The
alarm
went
off
about
half
an
hour
ago,
the
second
time
tonight.
Here,
one
bell
means
“elephant”,
two,
“rhino”
(犀牛),
and
three
and
four,
I
really
can't
remember
for
what,
because
when
you're
awoken
by
bells
in
the
middle
of
the
night,
your
first
thought
won't
be
“Animal!
”.
But
as
soon
as
I
realized
it
was
the
rhino
alarm,
I
was
running
for
the
stairs.
Yet
I'm
the
only
one
watching
the
animals
stare-down.
Either
everyone
else
died
of
a
heart
attack
when
the
bells
went
off,
or
l
was
the
only
one
in
the
entire
hotel
who
didn't
turn
the
alarm
switch
to
off
before
going
to
bed.
The
Ark,
a
hotel
shaped
like
the
biblical
ark(圣经的方舟)
,
lies
in
the
highlands
of
Kenya's
Aberdare
National
Park,
about
100
kilometers
north
of
Nairobi.
At
the
Ark's
prow(船首)
are
huge
windows
overlooking
a
waterhole.
Earlier
tonight,
I'd
watched
a
pack
of
wolves,
buffalos
and
elephants.
And
now,
at
three
or
so
in
the
morning,
I'm
down
for
rhino
bells.
The
first
time,
2.
5
hours
ago,
it
was
a
single
black
rhino,
which
came
down,
got
a
drink,
and
left.
I'd
have
been
sorry
for
the
lost
sleep.
I've
already
arranged
with
a
guide
to
take
me
out
at
sunrise
for
the
so-called
“should_never_miss”
bird-watching,
where
we'll
get
to
see
30
species,
but
really,
how
many
times
in
your
life
will
you
get
to
wake
up
and
say,
“Wow!
Rhino!”?
Isn't
that
the
definition
of
a
pretty
good
night?
Last
week
we
went
from
Uganda
into
Kenya.
Before
I
left
home,
1
thought
I'd
be
happy
with
ten
elephants
and
five
or
six
giraffes
on
the
whole
trip.
I
didn't
dare
to
dream
the
rhino.
21.The

toward
the
bell?

be
turned
off
whenever
it
rings.
C.It
lets

buffalos.

is
a
very
bad
way
to
wake
the
guests
up.
23.What

we
learn
from

passage?
A.The

There
is
no
way
to
stop
hurricane
or
make
it
change
direction,
so
if
you
ever
find
yourself
in
the
path
of
hurricane,
be
sure
to
follow
any
emergency
procedures(紧急程序)that
your
community
has
in
place.
Here
are
some
other
hurricane
safety
tips.

Be
sure
you
have
a
battery-powered
radio,
batteries,
fresh
drinking
water
and
a
supply
of
food.
Also,
if
anyone
your
family
needs
special
medication(药物),be
sure
you
have
full
supply.

Tell
neighbours,
friends
and
family
members
your
emergency
plans.
Tell
them
where
you'll
go
if
you
need
to
leave
your
home.

If
you
live
near
the
ocean,
in
low-lying
area,
or
in
a
mobile
home,
leave
your
home
and
travel
inland
to
a
safe
place.
You
could
stay
with
a
friend
or
family
member,
in
an
inland
hotel
or
motel,

in
an
emergency
shelter
area.

Keep
listening

the
radio
if
a
hurricane
is
approaching.
If
local
authorities
instruct
you
to
evacuate,
do
it
immediately.
"Before
a
hurricane
arrives,
be
sure
your
family's
car
is
filled
with
fuel.
If
the
electricity
goes
out,
the
fuel
pumps
at
gas
stations
will
not
work.

Stay
inside
during
the
storm.
You
could
be
seriously
injured
if
you
go
outside.
You
should
always
take
good
care
of
your
pets
and
keep
them
indoors
during
a
storm.
If
you
have
to
evacuate
your
home,
remember
that
pets
are
not
allowed
in
most
emergency
shelters
and
hotel
rooms.
If
you
leave
pets
behind,
be
sure
you
set
out
plenty
of
food
and
water
for
them.
Also,
be
sure
they're
wearing
a
collar
with
your
family's
name
and
phone
number
on
it.

C
Home
to
me
means
a
sense
of
familiarity
and
nostalgia(怀旧).
It's
fun
to
come
home.
It
looks
the
same.
It
smells
the
same.
You'll
realize
what's
changed
is
you.
Home
is
where
we
ran
remember
pain,
live,
and
some
other
experiences;
We
parted
here;
My
parents
met
here;
I
won
three
championships
here.
If
I
close
my
eyes,
I
can
still
have
a
clear
picture
in
mind
of
my
first
home.
I
walk
in
the
door
and
see
a
brown
sofa
surrounding
a
low
glass-top
wooden
table.
To
the
right
of
the
living
room
is
my
first
bedroom.
It's
empty,
but
it's
where
my
earliest
memories
are.
There
is
the
dining
room
table
where
I
celebrated
birthdays,
and
where
I
cried
on
Halloween-when
I
didn't
want
to
wear
the
skirt
my
mother
made
for
me.
I
always
liked
standing
on
that
table
because
it
made
me
feel
tall
and
strong.
If
I
sit
at
this
table,
I
can
see
my
favorite
room
in
the
house,
my
parents'
room.
It
is
simple:
a
brown
wooden
dresser
lines
the
right
side
of
the
wall
next
to
a
television
and
a
couple
of
photos
of
my
grandparents
on
each
side.
Their
bed
is
my
safe
zone.
I
can
jump
on
it
anytime
-
waking
up
my
parents
if
I
am
scared
or
if
I
have
an
important
announcement
that
cannot
wait
until
the
morning.
I'm
lucky
because
I
know
my
first
home
still
exists.
It
exists
in
my
mind
and
heart,
on
a
physical
property(住宅)
on
West
64th
street
on
the
western
edge
of
Los
Angeles.
It
is
proof
I
lived,
I
grew
and
I
learned.
Sometimes
when
I
feel
lost,
I
lie
down
and
shut
my
eyes,
and
I
go
home.
I
know
it's
where
I'll
find
my
family,
my
dogs,
and
my
belongings.
I
purposely
leave
the
window
open
at
night
because
I
know
I'll
be
blamed
by
Mom.
But
I
don't
mind,
because
I
want
to
hear
her
say
my
name,
which
reminds
me
I'm
home.

play
together
with
her

B.To
declare
how
much
she
loves
her

house.
C.To
describe
the
state
of
her

D
In
1977,
a
University
of
Oxford
statistician
named
Richard
Peto
pointed
out
a
simple
yet
puzzling
biological
fact:
we
humans
should
have
a
lot
more
cancer
than
mice,
but
we
don’t.
Dr.
Peto’s
argument
was
simple.
Every
time
a
cell
divides,
there’s
a
small
chance
it
will
gain
a
mutation(突变)
that
speeds
up
its
growth.
Cells
that
accumulate
(聚集)
several
of
these
mutations
may
become
cancerous.
The
bigger
an
animal
is,
the
more
cells
it
has,
and
the
longer
an
animal
lives,
the
more
times
its
cells
divide.
We
humans
undergo
(经历)
about
10,000
times
as
many
cell
divisions
as
mice—and
thus
should
be
far
more
likely
to
get
cancer.
A
number
of
scientists
have
assumed
that
large,
long-lived
animals
must
have
evolved
extra
cancer-fighting
weapons.
Otherwise,
these
species
would
die
out.
Dr.
Joshua
D.Schiffman,
an
oncologist
(肿瘤学家)at
the
Huntsman
Cancer
Institute,
reviewed
zoo
records
on
the
deaths
of
644
elephants
and
found
that
less
than
5
percent
died
of
cancer.
By
contrast,
11
percent
to
25
percent
of
humans
die
of
cancer.
To
understand
the
elephants’
defenses,
the
scientists
investigated
a
gene
that
is
vital
to
preventing
cancer
called
p53.
The
protein
encoded
by
the
gene
monitors
cells
for
damage
to
the
DNA
they
contain.
Dr.
Schiffman
and
his
colleagues
found
that
elephants
have
evolved
new
copies
of
the
p53
gene.
While
humans
have
only
one
pair
of
p53
genes,
the
scientists
identified
20
pairs
in
elephants.
To
see
whether
these
extra
copies
of
p53
made
a
difference
in
fighting
cancer,
they
ran
experiments
on
elephant
cells.
They
treated
elephant
cells
with
damaging
radiation,
chemicals
and
UV
light.
“In
all
cases,
instead
of
trying
to
repair
the
damage,
the
elephant
cells
simply
committed
suicide”
said
Dr.
Schiffman.
He
said
he
thought
the
way
the
elephant
cells
responded
was
a
very
effective
way
to
block
cancer.
Patricia
Muller,
an
oncologist
at
the
MRC
Toxicology
Unit
at
the
University
of
Leicester,
who
was
not
involved
in
the
studies,
said
the
results,
though
convincing,
didn’t
firmly
establish
exactly
how
elephants
use
p53
to
fight
cancer.
One
possibility
is
that
the
extra
copies
don’t
actually
cause
cells
to
commit
suicide.
Instead,
they
may
act
as
decoys
(诱饵)
for
enzymes
(酶)
that
destroy
p53
proteins.
Dr.
Muller
