一、概念
情态动词本身有一定的词义,表示说话人的某种感情或语气,对某一动作或状态的某种态度,表示“需要”“可以”“必须”“应当”等意义。
二、基本特征
1.情态动词有一定的词义,不能单独作谓语,需和实义动词或系动词一起作谓语。

2.情态动词一般无人称和数的变化,个别情态动词有现在时和过去时两种时态变化。

4.情态动词后接动词原形。

三、基本用法
1.can与could的用法
(1)表示能力:can用来表示现在的能力,could表示过去的能力。

现在我会打篮球了,但小时候我不会。
(2)表示请求和许可:could语气比can委婉,但回答时只能用can。

(3)表示推测,意为“可能”,多用于否定句或疑问句。

3.will与would的用法
(1)表示请求、建议,用于第二人称疑问句中,would比will委婉客气。

(2)表示意志、愿望和决心,有“愿;要”之意。would表示过去的意愿和决心。

4.shall与should的用法
(1)shall用于疑问句中多表示征求建议,主要用于第一、三人称。

他什么时候能出院?
(2)shall用于第二、第三人称,表示说话人给对方命令、警告、允诺或威胁。
You
shall
fail
if
you
don't
work

我读完了这本书他可以看。(允诺)
(3)should的基本用法是“有责任或义务做某事”,语气略逊于must,跟ought
to基本相同。此外,还表示劝告、建议、命令等含义。

小孩子不应接受陌生人的糖果。
(4)“should+have+过去分词”表示“过去应该做而实际上没有做”。

(5)should表示推测、可能性。这种推测往往有一定的根据,含有“按道理应该”之意,只用于肯定句中。

5.must的用法
(1)must表示命令或强烈的建议,意为“必须”。

(2)表示十分肯定的推测,意为“一定;准是”。

(3)表示说话人的一种态度,意为“偏要;硬要;偏偏”。
