Mum

Dad

Mum

“I’m

James,”
she
said.
“I’m
never

Why,
Mum?”
James
asked
sadly,
almost
in
tears.
“I
know
it’s

for
you,”
Mum
said
softly.
“But
I’m
just
worried
other
people
might

we’re
a
little…
strange.
And
then
they
would

“No,
they
wouldn’t,
Mum,”
James
protested.
“We’re
not
15
at
all.
We’re
just
ordinary
people.”
Mum
sighed
heavily.
“To
tell
you
the
truth,
James,
my

painful
that
it’s
given
me
a
heavy

“I

Mum!”
James
said.

Dad

Brett

Please?”
“Well…”Mum
began.
“Great!
Thanks,
Mum!”
James
almost
shouted.
“Just

don’t

He
rushed

“Hang
on,
Mum,”
he
said.
“This
won’t

After
some
repairs,
James
was
finished.
With
a
smile
of
19
on
his
face
he
said,
“There!
How
does
that
feel?”
“Oh,
James,”
Mum
said.
“That’s
much
better!
How
did
you
do
it?”
“Easy,”
James
said
20
.
“Dad

tightened
your

much!
I
just
adjusted
them

“What
about
your
father?
Can
you

asked
Mum.
“I’ll
try,”
James
replied.
He
22
up
Dad’s
hair
at
the
back
of
his
neck,
and
plugged
the
electric
wire
into
Dad’s
head.
Then
he
turned
the

on.
Dad
opened
his
eyes
and
24
immediately.
“He
just
let
his
battery
run
too
low,
that’s
all,”
James
said,
“Shall
I
tell
Brett
to
come
over
straight
after

tomorrow?”
“I
guess
so,”
replied
Mum.

第二部分:阅读理解(共
10
小题;每小题
3
分,满分
30
分)
阅读下列短文,从每题所给的A、B、C、D
四个选项中,选出最佳选项。
A
Summer
is
coming.
How
will
you
spend
your
summer
holidays?
Will
you
go
camping,
do
sports
or
go
on
with
your
studies?
Why
not
try
some
part-time
jobs
during
the
summer?
When
I
was
in
senior
high
school,
many
of
my
friends
held
part-time
jobs.
The
most
common
jobs
for
teenagers
were
restaurant
jobs.
Working
in
the
kitchen,
waiting
tables
and
washing
dishes
were
a
few
of
the
most
typical
ones.
But
my
first
part-time
job
was
working
at
a
bookstore.
I
went
to
the
bookstore
every
day
after
school
to
look
for
new
books
and
hang
out
with
my
friends,
so
I
thought,
why
not
work
there
and
make
some
money?
One
of
the
reasons
why
these
jobs
are
often
worked
by
teenagers
is
that
they
pay
low
wages.
But
the
wage
is
still
ok.
When
I
worked
at
the
bookstore,
I
spent
my
entire
salary
in
the
same
store
buying
books.
It
was
almost
like
my
boss
paid
me
in
books
instead
of
money.
But
at
the
time,
that
was
perfectly
fine
by
me.
By
doing
the
part-time
job,
I
made
some
money,
met
different
people
and
became
independent
and
responsible.
What
does
the
writer
advise
us
to
try
in
the
summer
holidays?
A.
Studying.
B.
Doing
sports.
C.
Going
camping.
D.
Doing
part-time
jobs.
What
was
the
most
common
job
for
teenagers
according
to
the
second
paragraph?
A.
Selling
books.
B.
Washing
dishes.
C.
Paying
wages.
D.
Mending
tables.
Where
did
the
writer
start
working?
A.
In
a
school.
B.
In
a
library.
C.
In
a
bookstore.
D.
In
a
restaurant.
What
can
be
inferred
in
the
last
paragraph?
Teenagers
often
got
high
pay.
The
boss
paid
the
writer
in
books.
The
writer
benefited
a
lot
from
the
job.
People
became
independent
by
reading.
What
is
the
main
purpose
of
the
text?
A.
To
persuade.
B.
To
amuse.
C.
To
compare.
D.
To
argue.
B
What
do
you
think
of
your
Chinese?
If
you
think
your
Chinese
is
good
enough,
you
can
take
part
in
the
competition
named
Chinese
Characters
Dictation
Competition.
Today
teenagers
are
using
more
and
more
中国汉字听写大会
smart
phones.
They
spend
too
much
time
in
shopping,
chatting,
playing
games
and
so
on.
Many
of
them
cannot
stop
using
smart
phones
to
help
with
their
study.
Overuse
of
smart
phones
will
make
students
too
lazy
to
think
and
write.
Some
of
them
even
forget
how
to
write
Chinese
characters
by
hand.
Teachers
and
parents
are
very
worried
about
it.
In
order
to
draw
people’s
attention
to
the
problems
above,
in
2013
CCTV
held
the
first
Chinese
Characters
Dictation
Competition.
About
200
students
from
32
teams
took
part
in
it.
They
stood
on
the
stage
to
write
down
Chinese
characters
by
dictation.
Lu
Jialei,
a
14-year-old
girl
from
Zhejiang,
got
first
place.
Since
then,
the
competition
has
been
popular
among
teenagers.
Many
people
are
interested
in
this
kind
of
competition,
too.
They
like
to
write
down
the
characters
while
the
competitors
are
writing
them.
Can
you
be
the
next
winner?
From
Paragraph
2,
we
know
that
teenagers
are

小题,共

第一节:阅读表达(共5小题;每小题2分,满分10分)
阅读下面短文,按照要求用英语回答问题。
Trees
are
useful
to
man
in
three
very
important
ways:
they
provide
him
with
wood
and
other
products;
they
give
him
shade;
they
help
to
prevent
drought
and
floods.
Unfortunately,
in
many
parts
of
the
world,
man
has
not
realized
that
the
third
of
these
services
is
the
most
important.
To
make
money
from
the
trees,
he
has
cut
them
down
in
large
numbers,
only
to
find
that
without
them
he
has
lost
the
best
friends
he
had.
Two
thousand
years
ago,
a
rich
and
powerful
country
cut
down
its
trees
to
build
warships,
with
which
to
gain
itself
an
empire
(帝国).
It
gained
the
empire,
but
since
the
trees
were
cut
down,
its
soil
became
hard
and
poor.
When
the
empire
fell
to
pieces,
the
home
country
found
itself
faced
by
floods
and
hunger.
Even
where
a
government
realizes
the
importance
of
an
enough
supply
of
trees,
it
is
difficult
for
it
to
let
the
villagers
see
this.
The
villagers
want
wood
to
cook
their
food
with,
and
they
can
earn
money
by
selling
wood
to
the
townsmen.
They
are
usually
too
lazy
or
too
careless
to
plant
and
look
after
new
trees.
So,
unless
the
government
has
a
good
system
of
control
or
can
educate
the
villagers,
the
forests
will
not
get
protected.
This
does
not
only
mean
that
the
villagers’
sons
and
grandsons
will
have
fewer
trees.
The
results
are
even
more
serious.
Where
there
are
trees,
their
roots
break
the
soil
up,
allowing
the
rain
to
sink
in,
which
makes
the
soil
stick
together
and
prevents
it
being
washed
away
easily.
Where
there
are
no
trees,
the
rain
falls
on
hard
ground
and
flows
away
on
the
surface,
causing
floods
and
carrying
away
with
it
the
rich
top-soil,
in
which
crops
grow
so
well.
When
all
the
top-soil
is
gone,
nothing
remains
but
worthless
desert.
Why
do
men
cut
down
trees
in
large
numbers
in
many
places?
