A
little
more
than
30
years
ago,
a
teenager
named
Jadav

Molai”
Payeng
began
burying
seeds
along
a
barren
sandbar(沙洲)near
his
birthplace
in
northern
India’s
Assam.
Not
long
after
that,
he
decided
to
dedicate(献身)
his
life
to
this
effort,
so
he
moved
to
the
site
in
order
that
he
could
work
full-time
creating
a
new
forest
ecosystem.
Unbelievably,
the
spot
today
hosts
a
sprawling(蔓延的)
1360
acres
of
jungle
that
Payeng
single-handedly
planted.
The
Times
of
India
recently
caught
up
with
Payeng
in
his
remote
forest
cottage
to
learn
more
about
how
he
came
to
leave
such
an
unbelievable
mark
on
the
landscape.
It
all
started
way
back
in
1979,
when
floods
washed
a
large
number
of
snakes
ashore
on
the
sandbar.
One
day
after
the
floods,
Payeng,
only
16
then,
found
the
place
dotted
with
the
dead
snakes.
That
was
the
turning
point
of
his
life.
“The
snakes
died
in
the
heat
without
any
tree
cover.
I
sat
down
and
wept
over
their
lifeless
bodies.
I
asked
the
forest
department
if
they
could
grow
trees
there.
They
said
nothing
would
grow
there.
Instead,
they
asked
me
to
try
growing
bamboo.
It
was
painful,
but
I
did
it
.There
was
nobody
to
help
me.
Nobody
was
interested,”
says
Payeng,
now
47.
While
it’s
taken
years
for
Payeng’s
remarkable
dedication
to
planting
to
receive
some
well-deserved
recognition
internationally,
it
didn’t
take
long
for
wildlife
in
the
region
to
benefit
from
the
forest.
Demonstrating
a
keen
understanding
of
ecological
balance,
Payeng
even
transplanted
ants
to
his
ecosystem
to
maintain
its
natural
harmony
.Soon
the
shadeless
sandbar
was
transformed
into
a
natural
ecosystem.
The
forest,
called
the
Molai
woods,
now
serves
as
a
safe
habitat
for
numerous
birds,
deer,
rhinos,
tigers
and
elephants.
Despite
Payeng’s
outstanding
project,
forestry
officials
in
the
region
first
learned
of
this
new
forest
in
2008,
and
since
then
they’ve
come
to
recognize
his
efforts
as
truly
remarkable,
but
perhaps
not
enough.
“We’re
amazed
at
Payeng,”
says
Gunin
Saikia,
Assistant
Conservator
of
Forests.
“He
has
been
at
it
for
30
years
.Had
he
been
in
any
other
country,
he
would
have
been
made
a
hero.”
25.
Payeng
moved
to
the
barren
sandbar
to
________________.
A.
make
a
living
there

trees
to

A
first
grader
and
her
sister
who
is
a
fourth
grader
at
Elon
Elementary
School
had
an
ambitious
project:
to
publish
a
book
to
stop
bullying.
“We
decide
to
take
a
stand,”
said
Keegan
Lee,
10.
“We’re
trying
to
make
a
difference
and
to
let
the
bullies
know
that
bullying
is
not
acceptable
—because
they
don’t
know
that
they’re
hurting
people’s
feelings
—and
make
a
peaceful
world.”
Keegan
and
her
7-year-old
sister
Kohen
wrote
a
book
called
Bullies
Need
a
Time
out
.
They
got
the
idea,
said
Charmin
Lee,
Keegan
and
Kohen’s
mother,
when
Koken
was
in
kindergarten
.She
saw
some
kids
on
the
playground
picking
on
a
classmate,
and
she
spoke
up
to
stop
it.
“I
talked
to
my
mom
about
it,
and
she
said,
‘let’s
make
a
bully
book,’”
Kohen
said.
Although
Keegan
was
the
writer,
Kohen
contributed
a
lot.
Kohen
also
illustrated.
What
she
likes
to
draw
had
a
lot
to
do
with
how
the
story
came
out,
Charmin
said.
“The
girls
have
not
been
around
a
lot
of
serious
bad
behavior
at
Elon
Elementary
School,”
Charmin
said,
“but
it
is
something
they
have
heard
and
are
sensitive
about.”
“Some
people
call
people
bad
names
and
call
people
losers
and
stuff
like
that,”
Keegan
said.
“And
when
I
see
that,
I
get
so
upset.”
The
book
is
about
a
boy
named
Kipton
who
sees
bullying
in
the
classroom,
cafeteria
and
playground,
and
tries
to
help.
“So
Kipton
make
a
difference,”
Kohen
said.
Charmin
Lee
said
there
are
a
lot
of
books
about
bullying,
but
most
of
them
are
about
therapy
and
adult
intervention(调停),
written
by
PhDs
for
teachers.
“We
didn’t
see
any
children’s
books
written
for
children
by
children,”
Charmin
said.
Charmin
wants
to
publish
the
book
through
self-publishing
company
Lulu,
and
donate
a
copy
to
every
school
in
Alamance
County,
but
it
is
expensive.
She
is
looking
for
some
grant
opportunities,
and
intends
to
have
some
copies
available
by
the
end
of
summer.
“It’s
pretty
much
ready
to
go,”
Charmin
said.

Choosing
what
you
want
to
do
with
the
rest
of
your
life
can
be
challenging,
here
are
some
suggestions
on
how
to
choose
a
college
major
that
you
will
enjoy.
Let
your
core
classes
help
you
choose
a
major
If
you
are
still
in
high
school,
take
a
look
at
each
of
your
classes
and
identify
which
ones
you
enjoy
most.
If
you’re
going
back
to
college
after
starting
your
career,
think
back
to
your
best
high
school
classes
(e.g.
math,
biology,
history,
etc.).This
can
help
you
identify
your
strengths
and
interests
so
you
can
narrow
your
list
of
possible
university
degree
programs
to
a
particular
field
of
study.
Prioritize
(划分优先顺序)your
career
wants
and
needs
First
and
foremost,
a
college
major
should
be
chosen
based
on
your
interest
and
career
goals.
However,
it
is
not
uncommon
for
students
to
select
their
majors
based
on
the
careers
of
their
parents
or
siblings(兄弟姐妹).If
following
in
their
footsteps
is
not
right
for
the
student,
then
it
will
likely
lead
to
an
unfulfilling
education
and
career.
When
choosing
a
major,
it
is
important
to
identify
what
aspects
of
a
career
are
most
important
to
you
(money,
creative
freedom,
helping
people,
working
outdoors
etc.).Making
a
list
of
your
top
priorities
will
shed
plenty
of
light
on
which
degree
or
major
is
best
for
you
.Also,
talk
to
your
parents
and
siblings
about
the
choices
they
made
and
whether
they
think
those
majors
and
careers
would
be
a
good
fit
for
you.
Additional
tips
for
choosing
majors
Seeking
outside
advice,
not
just
from
family
members,
is
always
recommended
when
choosing
a
college
major.
Talk
with
career
counselors,
high
school
teachers,
guidance
counselors
and
students
who
currently
enrolled
in
a
major
you
are
interested
in.
Speaking
to
professors
at
universities
or
to
professionals
in
the
field
can
also
give
you
a
good
idea
of
what
you
might
expect
from
a
career.
There
are
also
tests
you
can
take
that
give
an
insight
into
career
matches,
dominant
personality
characters
and
key
interests.
While
a
test
should
not
dictate
your
choices,
it
can
offer
you
a
new
perspective
on
yourself
and
open
your
eyes
to
majors
and
career
prospects
you
didn’t
consider.
33.
Where
does
the
support
for
your
particular
field
of
study
mainly
come
from?
A.

some
ways

make
it
as
sharp
as
ever.

Well
This
is
very
important
if
you
want
to
keep

attending
baking
or
painting

not
really
in
the

that
you

in

that
you
focus
on
it
for
regular
periods
of
time
and
find
it
interesting.

Jeremy
Locke,
25,
has
his
own
roofing
company
in
Bridgeport,
Nova
Scotia.
For
a
couple
of
years
before
he
began
his
41
,
he
would
drive
past
the
home
of
Jeanette
MacDonald,
noticing
the
42
state
of
her
roof.
He
was
43
—not
just
for
the
elderly
woman
but
also
for
the
children
living
with
her.
So
Locke
44
to
lend
a
helping
hand.
The
young
man
knocked
on
MacDonald's
door
and
45
to
fix
her
roof
for
nothing,
"I
didn't
know
who
the
woman
was,
but
I
wanted
to
46
this
for
her
and
her
grandchildren,"
he
explained
to
The
Chronicle
Herald.
However,
despite
his
kind
47
,
the
woman
politely
turned
him
down.
MacDonald
and
her
48
left
an
impression
on
Locke.
He
saw
49
between
the
woman
and
his
own
grandmother,
and
couldn't
bear
to
see
her
in
this
50
.
He
had
also
grown
up
without
much
and
felt
that
he
should
use
his
skills
to
51
.
A
year
after
Locke
set
up
his
own
roofing
company,
seeing
that
the
roof
was
52

state
of
disrepair,
Locke
returned
to
MacDonald's
home
and
asked
MacDonald
if
she
wanted
to
enter
a
raffle
(抽奖)
his
company
was
doing
for
a
53
roof.
The
70-year-old
woman
54
the
chance,
but
little
did
she
know
that
there
was
no
55
.
MacDonald's
relief
56
Locke's
kindness
is
immeasurable,
"I
could
win
$1
million
but
it
wouldn't
make
me
as
57
as
knowing
I'm
getting
a
new
roof
on.
Jeremy
is
58
something.
He's
a
guardian
angel
(守护天使)
sent
from
God."
The
59
should
cost
about
$
9,000
in
terms
of
materials
and
manpower.
However,
the
only
thing
Locke
wants
in
return
is
a
home-cooked
meal
for
his
staff
from
the
woman
who
60
him
of
his
grandmother.
