Avi Wortis writes historical novels. Historical novels mix historical facts with storytelling skill. These stories take place in the past. The main characters are not always real; they exist only in stories.

Writing stories lets him explore many sides of a subject. His favorite part is to make improvements in his writing. For him the hardest part is writing the first draft(草稿).
Avi’s first book was published in 1970. He has since written more than 45 books. Most of them are for young-adult readers. Have you ever heard the story of the four-minute mile Many years ago, people believed it was impossible for a person to run a mile in less than four minutes until Roger Banister proved it wrong in 1954.
What happens if you put an animal in a pond Any animal, big or small, will swim its way through. What happens when someone, who does not know how to swim, falls in deep waters They drown. If an animal who has not learned swimming could escape by swimming, why not you Because you believe you will drown while the animal does not.
Have you ever wondered why the letters are organized in a particular order on your keyboard You might have thought it is to increase the typing speed. Most people never question it. But the fact is that this system was developed to reduce the typing speed at a time when typewriter parts would jam if the operator typed too fast..
These three cases show the power of our beliefs. There is no other more powerful directing force in human behavior than belief. Your beliefs have the power to create and to destroy. A belief delivers a direct command to your nervous system.
I used a snake in my workshops for children to show them how unrealistic some of their beliefs are. Students of a school in India, said snakes were slippery, slimy(粘糊糊的) and poisonous. After doing an exercise for changing beliefs, they handled my snake and found it to be dry and clean. They also remembered that only three types of poisonous snakes exist in India.
Did the story end the way you thought Review your beliefs and find out which ones you need to change.

It is a beautiful day here and I had just returned from a long bike ride. It seems amazed that at my age I am still unfit enough to cycle 20 kilometers in an afternoon. I’ll be 82 years old! I think my long and active life must be due to the healthy life where I live. This brings me to the real reason as my letter. I heard that you started smoking but now you are finding it difficult to give up. Believe me, I know how easy it is to begin smoking and what tough it is to stop. You see, during adolescence I too smoked and became addict to cigarettes.

It is known to us all that some students copy others’ homework. As students, we have to do plenty of homework both at home and at school, but sometimes we have some homework which is too difficult for us. On the other hand, some students are lazy, and are not interested in their lessons. They don’t work hard. In order to finish the assignments and please their teachers, some students copy others’ homework.
In my opinion, it is wrong to copy others’ homework because it breaks the school rules. Students should be honest and try to finish our homework by ourselves instead of by copying. Even though we have trouble doing our homework we can ask our classmates or teachers for help.
