A
The
annual
marathon
in
my
town
occurred
as
scheduled.
My
job
was
to
follow
behind
the
runners
in
an
ambulance
in
case
any
of
them
needed
medical
attention.
As
the
athletes
began
to
pace
themselves,
the
front
runners
started
to
disappear.
It
was
then
that
my
eyes
were
drawn
to
the
woman
in
blue
running
shorts
and
a
baggy
white
T-shirt.
I
knew
we
were
already
watching
our
“last
runner”.
Her
feet
were
turned
in,
yet
her
left
knee
was
turned
out.
Her
legs
were
so
crippled
(跛足的)
and
bent
that
it
seemed
impossible
for
her
to
walk,
let
alone
run
a
marathon.
The
driver
and
I
watched
in
silence
as
she
slowly
moved
forward.
We
would
move
forward
a
little
bit,
then
stop
and
wait
for
her
to
gain
some
distance.
Then
we’d
slowly
move
forward
a
little
bit
more.
As
I
watched
her
struggle
to
put
one
foot
in
front
of
the
other,
I
found
myself
breathing
for
her
and
urging
her
forward.
I
wanted
her
to
stop,
and
at
the
same
time,
I
prayed
that
she
wouldn’t.
Finally,
she
was
the
only
runner
left
in
sight.
I
sat
on
the
edge
of
my
seat
and
watched
with
respect
and
amazement
as
she
pushed
forward
with
sheer
determination
through
the
last
miles.
When
the
finish
line
came
into
sight,
the
cheering
crowds
had
long
gone
home.
Yet,
standing
straight
and
proud
waited
a
man.
He
was
holding
one
end
of
a
ribbon
tied
to
a
post.
She
slowly
crossed
through,
leaving
both
ends
of
the
ribbon
fluttering
(飘动)
behind
her.
I
don’t
know
this
woman’s
name,
but
that
day
she
became
a
part
of
my
life
—
a
part
I
often
depend
on.
For
her,
it
wasn’t
about
beating
the
other
runners
or
winning
a
prize.
It
was
about
finishing
what
she
had
set
out
to
do.
When
I
think
things
are
too
difficult
or
I
get
those
“I-just-can’t-do-it,”
I
think
of
the
last
runner.
Then
I
realize
how
easy
the
task
before
me
really
is.

C
“I
think
I’m
nothing
more
than
a
dead
fish.”
“I
don’t
want
to
do
anything.”
“I’m
so
beat
and
so
sad.”...
The
young
generation
in
our
country
used
to
enjoy
their
“happy
culture”
but
now
they
have
become
“beat
and
sad”
slowly
and
secretly.
Some
people
even
called
it
“the
beat
culture”.
The
“Beat”
youths
don’t
want
to
do
anything.
They
have
no
purpose,
no
desire
and
they
are
totally
depressed
so
that
they
only
want
to
live
an
aimless
life.
The
“Ge
You
slouch
(葛优瘫)”
and
the
song
I
feel
like
having
been
drained
are
the
examples.
Many
media
concern
themselves
about
this
phenomenon
and
try
to
persuade
the
youths
into
embracing
positive
and
healthy
feelings
and
encourage
them
to
work
hard
to
get
rid
of
decadence.
This
is
really
a
kind
gesture.
However,
we
don’t
have
to
worry
too
much
about
this
“beat
culture.”
In
fact,
it’s
not
a
negative
thing.
“Beat”
never
means
despair,
but
a
way
of
self-mockery
(自嘲)
and
pressure
relief.
In
general,
the
youths
in
China
are
not
“beat”.
According
to
a
recent
international
research,
the
youths
in
China
hold
a
positive
attitude
towards
the
future.
29%
of
the
Chinese
interviewees
believe
they
will
live
and
work
in
peace
in
China
because
“as
long
as
you
work
hard,
you
can
have
your
own
day”.
Around
93%
of
the
Chinese
interviewees
believe
the
future
is
promising
because
of
medicine
industry,
renewable
energy
sources
and
computer.
Compared
with
Chinese
youngsters,
youths
in
developed
countries
are
more
pessimistic.
Of
course
there
are
some
social
reasons
for
the
appearing
of
“the
Beat
Culture”.
As
urbanization
develops
rapidly,
youths
living
in
big
cities
are
facing
new
challenges
that
their
forefathers
have
never
encountered
before.
Loneliness
and
feelings
of
insignificance
and
powerlessness
are
easy
to
get
hold
of
the
young
people.
Without
proper
care,
they
could
threaten
our
mentality
and
cause
many
social
problems.
These
problems
probably
need
our
attention
more.
8.

Studies
have
shown
most
people
fail
to
realize
how
much
time
they
spend
on
their
smart-phones
each
day.
Frank
and
Amelia's
family
were
put
to
a
test,
using
a
free
app
called
"Moment-screen
Time
Tracker".
The
Vascellaros—Frank,
Amelia,
14-year-old
twins
Frankie
and
Joe,
and
17-year-old
Sam—all
said
they
did
not
really
know
they
were
spending
so
much
time
on
their
phones
each
day.
“Honestly,
I
don't
feel
like
I'm
on
my
phone
a
lot,"
Amelia
Vascellaro
said.
Amelia
was
on
her
phone
far
less
often
than
Frank,
according
to
the
app.
While
Amelia
spent
about
an
hour
per
day
on
the
phone,
Frank
spent
close
to
four
hours
on
his
phone—which
came
as
a
shock
to
him.
The
children's
times
varied
but
they
often
spent
more
than
a
couple
of
hours
on
the
phone
as
well.
Minneapolis-based
Dr
Kirsten
Lind
Seal
sees
phone
usage
come
up
a
lot
among
families.
Lind
Seal
said
many
family
members'
phone
use
has
become
problematic.
“If
we
hear
more
than
once,
'Do
you
have
to
be
on
your
phone
right
now?
Can
you
please
put
your
phone
down?
Did
you
hear
what
I
said?'
it
may
be
a
sign
that
it
is
negatively
influencing
our
family
relationships
and
our
daily
lives,"
she
said.
Lind
Seal
said
actually
paying
attention
to
how
much
time
one
spends
on
the
phone
is
a
good
first
step
in
deciding
when
to
put
it
down.
She
asks
parents
to
encourage
more
face-to-face
communication
for
teens
and
young
adults
as
they
continue
developing
their
social
and
emotional
skills.
“What
we
find
is
that
we
are
really
losing
out
on
empathy—the
ability
to
understand
other
people's
feelings
and
problems——when
we
spend
a
lot
of
time
on
our
smart-phones
to
communicate
with
other
people
she
said.
12.How
did
the
families
tested
by
the
app
feel
about
the
test
results?
A.Satisfied.
B.Doubtful.
C.Uninterested.
D.Astonished.
13.Why
did
Lind
Seal
mention
the
three
questions

the
importance
of
close
relationships.
D.To
ask
people
if
they
use
phones
too
much.

did
Lind
Seal
want
to
convey
in

each
other
better

ability
of
empathy
is

根据短文内容,从短文后的选项中选出能填入空白处的最佳选项。选项中有两项为多余选项。
Many
people
are
aiming
and
praying
to
be
happy.
What
they
do
not
know
is
that
happiness
is
a
journey
and
not
a
destination.
16.
Here
are
some
of
the
how-to's.
Be
true
to
yourself.
17.
You
can
withdraw
with
a
person
that
cannot
satisfy
you.
You
can
change
a
job.
You
can
choose
friends.
If
you
think
people,
things
and
events
in
your
life
don't
give
you
happiness,
let
them
go
and
think
of
better
ways.
18.
Think
of
good
things
and
not
the
opposite.
When
you
think
you
have
less
money
in
your
pocket,
don't
say
“I
don't
want
to
be
poor".
Say
I
want
to
be
rich
or
I
have
more
than
enough
money
for
everything.
You'll
notice
you'll
attract
a
lot
of
good
things,
gifts
and
good
people
in
your
life
that
could
improve
your
financial
aspect.
Start
your
day
with
hopes.
By
the
time
you
wake
up,
stretch
your
muscles
with
hopes
and
thoughts
of
abundance
in
your
brain.
You'll
get
more
energy
than
waking
up
with
bad
mood.
19.
Always
smile.
Nobody
wants
to
be
depressed
people.
20.
You
cannot
sell
your
products
if
you
are
not
marketable
enough.
Smile
makes
some
people's
day.
Smile
and
the
world
smiles
with
you.
Happiness
depends
on
yourself.
If
you
want
happiness
in
your
life,
you
have
to
prove
it
in
your
actions.
To
receive,
feel
and
be
happy
is
to
do
happy
things
to
others.
A.Always
think
positive.
B.Be
thankful
for
the
journey
you
are
taking.
C.It
is
so
uncomfortable
to
be
with
people
who
love
frowning.
D.Don't
pretend
if
you
do
not
like
a
situation.
E.
Accept
people
for
who
they
are
and
don't
compare
them
with
other
better
people.
F.
Every
good
thing
in
the
world
is
already
here
and
it'
s
up
to
us
to
work
for
happiness.
G.
If
you
start
your
day
with
good
mood,
you'll
end
it
with
good
mood.

MacArthur's
love
for
sailing
dates
back
to
when
she
was
just
4
years
old,
when
she
first
got
the
opportunity
to
have
a
try
on
a
boat.
“It
kind
of
21
me
that
this
boat
had
everything
we
needed
to
take
us
anywhere
in
the
world.
And
as
a
child,that
opened
up
everything
and
made
me
feel
the
greatest
sense
of
22
,”
she
explained.
This
experience
23
a
passion
within
MacArthur
that
she
wanted
to
sail
around
the
world.
Growing
up
in
the
countryside.
she
had
no
idea
how
to
24
it.
However,
she
knew
that
was
what
she
wanted
to
do
at
some
stage.
So
she
acquired
knowledge
and
25
for
years
to
seek
her
dream
in
sailing.
Having
merely
potatoes
and
beans
every
day
for
eight
years,
she
26
could
afford
the
right
equipment.
By
reaching
such
27
goals
and
asking
technical
questions
about
28
,
MacArthur
felt
as
though
she
was
getting
29
to
her
ambition.
“The
impossible
could
be
possible
and
30
high
is
not
necessarily
such
a
crazy
thing
to
do.
"she
said.
And
it
seems
that
MacArthur's
31
to
become
a
sailor
went
beyond
her
expectations.
At
the
age
of
24,
she
started
to
32
media
attention
after
winning
the
second
place
in
the
Vendee
Globe,
a
single-handed
non-stop
yacht
(帆船)race
that
went
around
the
world.
Four
years
later,
MacArthur
chose
to
sail
for
71
days
and
14
hours,
33
more
than
26,000
miles.
This
led
to
her
scoring
a
new
record.
34
this
record
has
since
been
surpassed
(超过),MacArthur
is
still
considered
as
Britain's
most
successful
offshore
racer.
So
when
you
know
where
you're
going,
you
can
actually
get
there—even
if
it
seems
35

When
I
was
in
seventh
grade,
I
was
a
candy
striper
(护士助手)at
a
local
hospital
in
my
town.
I
volunteered
about
30
to
40
hours
a
week
during
the
summer.
Most
of
the
time
I
spent
there
was
with
Mr.
Green.
He
never
has
any
visitors,
and
nobody
seemed
to
care
about
his
condition.
I
spent
many
days
there
holding
his
hand
and
talking
to
him,
helping
with
anything
that
needed
to
be
done.
He
became
a
close
friend
of
mine,
even
though
he
responded
with
only
an
occasional
hold
of
my
hand.
Mr.
Green
was
in
a
coma
(昏迷).
I
left
for
a
week
for
a
vacation
with
my
parents,
and
when
I
came
back,
Mr.
Green
was
gone.
I
didn't
have
the
courage
to
ask
any
of
the
nurses
where
he
was,
for
fear
they
might
tell
me
he
had
died.
So
with
many
questions
unanswered,
I
continued
to
volunteer
there
through
my
eighth-grade
year.
Several
years
later,
when
I
was
a
junior
in
high
school,
I
was
at
the
gas
station
when
I
noticed
a
familiar
face.

He
began
to
tell
me
how,
as
he
lay
there
comatose,
he
could
hear
me
talking
to
him
and
could
feel
me
holding
his
hand
the
whole
time.
