The
man
goes
quietly
into
the
room.
He
stands
over
the
bed
where
his
three-day-old
son
is
lying
and
begins
to
speak
to
him.
“My
son,
I
have
dreamed
of
you
for
many,
many
years.
I
had
your
name
picked
out
even
before
you
were
born
because
I
knew
that
I
wanted
you.
Every
time
I
thought
of
you
I
would
have
a
smile
on
my
face.

joy.
“I

me
about
anything
and
not
be
embarrassed.
Most
of
the
time
it
will
seem
like
I
am
too
old
to
understand,
but
I’m
sure
you
will
see
that,
as
I
did
with
my
father,
my
advice
is
some
of
the
best
you
will
get.
“I
am
sorry
for
the
misunderstandings
(误会)
we
will
have,
but
you
will
understand
I
spent
my
whole
life
waiting
for
you.
You
are
my
son,
so
I
am
not
going
to
sit
back
and
watch
you
hurt
yourself.
You
are
very
important
to
me.

The
man
stops
and
looks
at
his
son.
Then
he
begins
to
sob
(呜咽).
“Sorry
my
dear,
I’m
crying
because
something
bad
happened.
I
am
seriously
ill.
I
will
leave
you
soon.”
The
man
gives
a
weak
laugh.
“This
is
the
first
time
in
many
years
I
have
been
brought
to
tears.”
The
man
kisses
the
baby
who
is
sleeping
so
soundly
and
whispers,
“I
will
love
you
forever.”

B
The
trouble
started
at
9:30
pm
last
New
Year’s
Eve,
in
Newmark.
When
the
fire
engines
(消防车)
arrived
at
the
fire,
a
very
old
woman
was
sitting
in
a
third
floor
window.
The
firefighters
placed
a
ladder
(梯子)
against
the
wooden
house,
and
26-year-old
Marcus
Reddick
climbed
35
feet
to
the
third
floor.
The
woman,
60
years
old
and
very
fat,
was
sitting
with
both
feet
out
of
the
window.
When
Marcus
reached
the
top
of
the
ladder,
the
woman,
afraid
and
nervous,
put
her
two
legs
around
him.
Suddenly
Marcus
fell
backwards
off
the
ladder,
with
the
large
woman
sitting
on
him.
Marcus
landed
first—hitting
a
wall
beside
the
front
stairs—and
broke
the
woman’s
fall.
She
fell
no
more,
but
he
fell
another
ten
feet
down
the
stairs.
When
the
fire
officer
reached
him,
Marcus
was
unconscious.
Within
an
hour,
a
doctor
told
the
men
that
Marcus
was
nearly
brain
dead,
and
would
only
get
worse.
Doctors
talked
of
turning
off
the
life-saving
machine
and
asked
if
the
family
would
like
to
give
away
his
heart.
The
answer
was
“yes”.
On
January
6,
firefighters
lifted
Marcus’
coffin
(棺材)—covered
with
an
American
flag—onto
a
yellow
fire
engine.
Hundreds
of
firefighters
from
all
over
the
state
joined
the
procession
(行列)
through
Newmark
streets.
Children
watched
silently
from
school
windows.
The
day
Marcus
died,
his
heart
was
given
away
to
a
young
girl.
His
family
said
that
it
was
the
second
life
Marcus
had
saved.

C
Everyone
likes
living
in
a
clean
and
comforting
environment.
If
the
environment
are
bad,
it
will
affect
our
body,
and
make
us
not
feel
well.
Sometimes
we
may
be
terribly
ill.
At
that
time
we
don’t
want
to
work,
and
we
have
to
stay
in
bed
and
rest
at
home.
So
the
environment
is
very
important
to
us.
It’s
germs
that
makes
us
ill.
There
are
germs
everywhere,
They
are
very
small
and
you
can’t
find
them
with
your
own
eyes,
but
you
can
see
them
with
a
microscope
They
are
very
small
and
there
may
be
hundreds
of
them
on
a
very
small
thing,
Germs
can
always
be
found
in
dirty
water.
When
we
look
at
dirty
water
under
the
microscope,
we
shall
see
them
in
it.
Germs
can
also
be
found
in
air
and
dust.
If
you
cut
your
finger,
some
of
the
dust
from
the
floor
may
go
into
it,
and
you
will
have
much
pain
in
it.
Sometimes
the
germs
will
go
into
all
of
your
body,
and
you
will
have
pain
everywhere.
To
keep
us
healthy,
we
should
try
our
best
to
make
our
environment
become
cleaner
and
tidier.
This
needs
us
to
act
together.
8.
The
writer
tells
us
that________.
A.
we
like
working
when
we
are
ill
B.
we
feel
well
when
the
environment
is
good.
C.
we
can’t
feel
ill
if
the
environment
is
bad.
D.
germs
can’t
live
in
the
water.
9.
Germs
are________.
A.
very
small
things
that
you
can’t
see
with
your
eyes.
B.
the
things
that
are
very
big.
C.
the
things
that
you
can
find
with
your
eyes.
D.
the
things
that
don’t
affect
people.
0.
Where
can
germs
be
found?
They
can
be
found_________.
A.
everywhere
B.
in
air
and
dust
C.
only
in
dirty
water
D.
on
the
small
thing
11.
From
the
passage
we
know
that________.
A.
environment
doesn’t
affect
our
life
B.
we
don’t
need
to
improve
our
environment
C.
germs
may
make
us
ill
D.
if
the
environment
is
better,
germs
will
be
more.
D
Students
perform
less
well
in
final
exams
if
smart-phones
are
allowed
in
class,
for
non-academic
(非学业的)
purposes
in
lectures,
a
new
study
in
Educational
Psychology
finds.
Students
who
don’t
use
smart-phones
themselves
but
attend
lectures
where
their
use
is
acceptable
also
do
worse,
suggesting
that
smart-phone
use
damages
the
group
learning
environment.
Researchers
from
Rutgers
University
in
the
US
performed
an
in-class
experiment
to
lest
whether
dividing
attention
between
smart-phones
and
the
lecturer
during
the
class
affected
students’
performance
in
within-lecture
tests
and
a
final
exam.
118
students
at
Rutgers
University
took
part
in
the
experiment
during
one
term
of
their
course.
Smart-phones
were
not
allowed
in
half
of
the
lectures
and
allowed
in
the
other
half.
When
smart-phones
were
allowed,
students
were
asked
to
record
whether
they
had
used
them
for
non-academic
purposes
during
the
lecture.
The
study
found
that
having
a
smart-phone
didn’t
lower
students’
scores
in
comprehension
tests
within
lectures,
but
it
did
lower
scores
in
the
final
exam
by
at
least
5%,
or
half
a
grade.
This
finding
shows
for
the
first
time
that
the
main
effect
of
divided
attention
in
the
classroom
is
on
the
length
of
time
in
keeping
memory,
with
fewer
things
of
a
study
task
later
remembered.
In
addition,
when
the
use
of
smart-phones
was
allowed
in
class,
performance
was
also
poorer
for
students
who
did
not
use
them
as
well
as
for
those
who
did.
The
study’s
lead
author,
Professor
Arnold
Glass,
added:
“These
findings
should
alarm
students
and
teachers
that
dividing
attention
is
having
a
not
obvious
but
harmful
effect
that
is
damaging
their
exam
performance
and
final
grade.
To
help
manage
the
use
of
smart-phones
in
the
classroom,
teachers
should
explain
to
students
the
alarming
effect—not
only
for
themselves,
but
for
the
whole
class.”
This
is
the
first-ever
study
in
an
actual
classroom
showing
a
relationship
between
losing
attention
from
smart-phones
and
exam
performance.
However,
more
researches
are
required
to
see
how
students
are
affected
by
using
smart-phones
after
school.
12.
What
is
the
purpose
of
paragraph
1?
A.
To
present
the
main
findings
of
the
experiment.
B.
To
explain
how
the
experiment
was
carried
out.
C.
To
give
details
about
the
result
of
the
experiment
D.
To
suggest
what
should
be
done
for
teachers
and
students.
13.
We
know
from
the
experiment
that
having
a
smart-phone
in
class
________.
A.
had
no
bad
effect
if
students
do
not
use
them
B.
caused
an
average
5%
drop
in
students’
scores
C.
made
it
harder
for
students
to
keep
things
in
mind
D.
had
a
bad
effect
on
students’
performance
in
all
tests
14.
What’s
Professor
Glass’
attitude
towards
using
smart-phones
in
class?
A.
He
was
against
it.
B.
He
was
in
favor
of
it.
C.
He
cared
little
about
it.
D.
He
doubted
the
findings.
15.
What
is
the
research
team
likely
to
do
next?
A.
To
find
out
ways
to
improve
students’
memory.
B.
To
call
on
schools
to
ban
smart-phones
completely.
C.
To
study
the
influence
of
using
smart-phones
after
class.
D.
To
do
researches
on
focusing
attention
in
actual
classrooms.

?Tips
to
create
great
readers
Great
readers
are
made;
they
are
not
born.
After
all,
children
don’t
enter
the
world
knowing
how
to
understand
a
text
or
make
inferences.
16
Here
are
some
tips
for
making
children
great
readers
by
habit.
17
The
most
important
moment
in
reading
instruction
is
when
a
student
gets
something
wrong.
If
the
student
continues
practicing
the
skill
incorrectly,
he
or
she
will
build
weaker
habits.
Intervene
(干预)
with
a
targeted
question,
such
as
“How
does
this
part
of
the
text
help
you
understand
this
character?”
Doing
so
can
prevent
poor
habits
from
taking
root
and
build
great
ones
in
their
place.
Build
great
reading
and
writing
skills
hand
in
hand.
Just
like
adults,
students
use
writing
to
gather
their
thoughts
about
a
text
and
communicate
their
ideas
to
others.
18
For
example,
students
can
have
a
discussion
about
what
they’re
reading
by
answering
a
focus
question
in
writing:
“What
is
the
author
trying
to
teach
us
in
this
story?”
19
By
doing
this,
you
can
get
a
better
understanding
of
what
guidance
the
students
will
need
during
the
discussion.
Make
sure
students
are
reading.
Independent
reading
time
is
important
for
any
reading
program.
It’s
a
chance
for
students
to
put
together
everything
they’ve
learned
in
reading
lessons
and
fly
using
their
own
wings.
20
Providing
a
rich
class
library
and
letting
students
know
that
they
are
expected
to
read
for
the
entire
period
will
ensure
their
success
as
lifelong
independent
readers.
A.
Build
habits
at
the
moment
of
error.
B.
Make
sure
students
fall
in
love
with
reading.
C.
Then,
you
can
review
their
written
responses.
D.
They
grow
into
great
readers
by
learning
great
habits.
E.
But
it
only
works
if
they
really
do
spend
that
time
reading.
F.
Specific
lines
or
phrases
from
the
text
help
to
reveal
that
information.
G.
Therefore,
you
can
develop
their
writing
and
reading
skills
at
the
same
time.

The
Fitting-in
of
Suzy
Khan
The
first
time
I
saw
Suzy
Khan,
I
knew
I
had
to
help
her.
She
was
really
small
for
her
age
of
12.
The
boys
in
my
class
often
1
about
her
and
laughed
their
heads
off.
She
would
open
a
book,
pretending
to
read,
with
tears
dropping
on
the
open
page.
All
I
knew
was
that
she
was
an
orphan
(孤儿)
from
Africa.
She
had
just
been
adopted
by
a
family
in
town
who
2
that
the
best
way
for
her
to
learn
American
ways
of
life
was
to
be
with
American
kids.
I
looked
down
at
this
3
girl
and
promised
myself
that
somehow
I
would
help
her.
But
how
could
I
help
her
4
in
with
us?
There
had
to
be
a
5
.
One
day,
when
I
went
into
the
classroom,
I
saw
that
Suzy
had
6
her
geography
book
to
a
picture
of
a
train,
and
in
her
notebook,
she
had
made
a(n)
7
copy.
I
was
surprised
and
thought
that
she
could
do
something
in
the
coming
8
show.
So,
I
took
her
to
see
the
art
teacher,
Miss
Parker,
and
showed
her
what
Suzy
had
9
.
“why,
it’s
wonderful,”
said
Miss
Parker,
who
then
showed
us
a
poster
she
had
painted
10
the
talent
show.
“I
need
more
of
these,
but
I
just
don’t
have
enough
11
.
Could
you
help
me,
Suzy?”
On
the
day
of
the
talent
show,
Suzy’s
12
were
everywhere
----
all
over
the
hall
and
all
over
the
school,
each
one
different.
“And
finally,”
said
Mr.
Brown,
the
schoolmaster,
at
the
end
of
the
show,
“we
have
a
(n)
13
award.
I’m
sure
you’ve
all
noticed
the
wonderful
posters.”
Everyone
nodded.
“One
of
our
own
students
14
them.”
I
could
hear
everyone
whispering.
“Who
in
our
school
could
draw
15
well?”
Mr.
Brown
waited
a
while
before
saying,

16
this
student
worked
so
hard
on
the
posters,
she
deserves
a
17
,too.
Our
mystery(神秘)
artist
is
our
new
student
----
Suzy
Khan!”
Mr.
Brown
thanked
her
for
all
the
wonderful
posters
and
gave
her
a
professional
artist’s
set.
“Thank
you,”
she
cried.
I
18
,
at
that
time
when
I
was
looking
at
her
excited
face,
she’d
probably
never
19
anything
in
her
whole
life.
Everyone
started
to
20
their
hands.
Suzy
Khan
gave
them
a
shy
smile
and
the
applause
was
deafening.
I
knew
then
Suzy
was
going
to
be
all
right.
