Howard Weistling wanted to be a comic strip (连环漫画) artist. But when the Japanese bombed Pearl Harbor, he joined the Army.
After flight engineer training, Howard was shipped off to Europe. On his maiden flight, his plane was shot down over Austria. The entire crew of eight men landed safely. But a farmer found Howard hiding in his barn and turned him over to a prison of war camp in Barth, Germany. It was freezing and the men almost starved to death eating the guards' garbage.
Hungry and homesick Howard coped the only way he knew how. He drew a comic strip. The book, made of cigarette wrappers bound together with scrap metal, was sent around the camp. Every couple of days he would add a new panel. One panel at a time would be passed around the whole camp. And they'd have something to look forward to.
After an entire year of this, they woke one morning to find their guards gone. They fled and Howard finally got to go home. Just lucky to get out alive, he left the book behind.
Back home in California, Howard soon had a wife and kids to feed so he had to set aside his dream of becoming an artist. He took a job as a gardener instead.
Morgan shared his father's artistic gifts. At 15 his parents sent him to art school. And Howard got to see his son become a well﹣known painter before he died in 2002. That's how, seven decades after the war, when a stranger in New York googled the name "Weistling," he found Morgan online.
"I get an email from a gentleman and he says, ‘I think I may have some drawings your father did when he was a POW (prisoner of war) in World War II,'" Morgan recalls. "‘Would you like them?' And I just stared at that email and started crying."
Luckily Howard had engraved his name on the comic book, which is how the man from New York City had connected with Morgan. A couple of days later when it arrived in California, Morgan couldn't believe it. "It was like getting my father back," Morgan says. "It was like him being able to tell me the story over again ﹣ only this time it was real in my hands."
24.The passage details Howard's life as a POW to show that .
A.war cannot stop his pursuit of success. B.passion for art helped ease his sufferings.
C.loss of freedom encouraged his creativity. D.misery drives him to fight against his fate.
25.What can we infer about Howard's comic strip in prison?
A.It satisfied prisoners' curiosity. B.It aroused the guards' sympathy.
C.It was popular among the prisoners. D.It raised prisoners' confidence in freedom.
26.What contributes to the stranger's success in finding Morgan?
A.The email from a gentleman. B.Howard's experience in the war.
C.Morgan's recalling of his father. D.Morgan's status in the field of art.
27.What can we infer about Morgan from the last paragraph?
A.He didn't believe the stranger's story.
B.He was excited to get the comic strip.
C.He couldn't wait to tell others his good news.
D.He hadn't heard about his father's war stories.

Unconfident children can improve their performance in math tests simply by saying nice things to themselves, a study suggests.
A total of 212 fourth to sixth graders, aged between 9 to 13 years old, took part in the research. The children completed a math test in two parts. At the end of the first half, researchers asked the first group of kids to talk to themselves about the amount of effort they would put into the second half of the test before carrying on. The children quietly told themselves: ''I will do my very best. '' Another group was told to consider their ability, by repeating the phrase: ''I am very good at this. '' The children were instructed to write down their given phrase, and repeat it to themselves while working on the problems, particularly when they found the work challenging. The rest of the children acted as the control group, and weren't required to say anything. A few days before completing the test, all the kids completed a survey on how they viewed their own and others' abilities.
Compared with kids who didn't do what is known as self-talking, those with low self-confidence who spoke about the effort they'd make did better in the second half of the test. The data led the researchers to conclude children who struggle with negative thoughts about their competence could improve their achievements in school by telling themselves they will put effort into a task.
However, the team said they did not find the same result among children with low self-confidence who spoke to themselves about ability, for self-talk about effort is the key. Meanwhile, they pointed out the findings may not relate to children of other ages, and more research is needed to explore this.
28.How was the research conducted?
A.By telling students to talk about their effort. B.By comparing three groups of students.
C.By instructing students to repeat phrases. D.By telling students not to say anything.
29.What conclusion did the researchers draw?
A.Students may benefit from talking about effort.
B.Students should talk about effort in the tests.
C.Students can benefit from talking about ability.
D.Self-talking helps all students do better in tests.
30.We can infer from the last paragraph that the research team is _________.
A.careless B.cautious
C.stubborn D.competitive
31.In which section of a newspaper may this text appear?
A.Entertainment. B.Health. C.Education. D.Sports.
D
Before my daughter, Evelyn, was born, I eagerly expected her first year of life. I imagined celebrating every milestone --- bonding with her as a newborn, seeing her smile for the first time, hearing her say her first word. 1 didn't think of feeding tubes, long hospital stays or an organ transplant( 移植). For Evelyn, the first year included all and more.
Evelyn came into this world at just 34 weeks, weighing less than 3 pounds. Genetic testing revealed she had Alagille syndrome, a genetic disorder that can damage the liver(肝脏),heart and other organs. Soon, we received the news that baby Evelyn needed a liver transplant. Our family moved nearer to UPMC Children's Hospial of Pittsburgh so that we were closer if a liver was available for Evelyn.
When Evelyn was added to the organ donation wait list, I was under the liver allocation policy in place at that time, which was map-based. This policy lacks any special consideration for transplant candidates. We were told it would likely take three months. Just then, a new policy for liver allocation was tried out.Under the new system, the sickest child patients get first priority(优先).The new policy was only in effect for a litle over a week, but in that period, Evelyn received her liver transplant. Had it been just one week earler or later, we would not have received the call.
As Evelyn recovers from her transplant, we are grateful for the change.I am also sad, because the new policy was short-lived. That means another mom like me might not receive that phone call with good news.
Other children should have the same opportunity as Evelyn to live healthy, happy lives. When it comes to liver transplant policy, we can and must do better for children.
32.What probably happened to Evelyn shorly after she was born?
A.She failed to give a smile. B.She had a serious liver failure.
C.She said her first word quickly. D.She suffered from a heart attack.
33.Why did the author's family move nearer to the hospital?
A.To save time. B.To have money. C.To see a doctor. D.To get first priority.
34.What does the author mean by the underlined sentence?
A.Evelyn is healthy now. B.They waited too long.
C.They were one week earlier. D.Her daughter is fortunate.
35.What does the author want to express in the last pargraph?
A.We must guarantee kids have healthy livers.
B.Kids should have chances of a liver transplant.
C.The sickest kids should get liver transplants first.
D.The old policy lacks special consideration for kids.

Everyone knows conferences are great for interpersonal relationships. Conferences are all about meeting people and making friends. Of course, some of those new contacts may become customers for your company too, but don’t try to sell to them at the conference unless you really have to. 36..
The most difficult part of communication is always breaking the ice: 37.. We call it golden time. Actually, it can be incredibly tough to walk into a room full of people, all of whom seem to know each other and are involved in deep conversations. How on earth do you join in?
38.. It’s polite to introduce yourself and ask if you can join the group, but there’s nothing wrong with standing and listening for a few minutes first.
The worst thing to do is to walk around looking busy. This is like holding up a sign saying “Please don’t talk to me”. A much better solution, though, is to move slowly around the room, make eye contact with people, smile and say “ hello”.39..
Sometimes, we’re our own worst enemies. 40.. However, when someone tries to engage us in conversation, we can’t wait to get away. If someone has made the effort to come up to you, they deserve at least five minutes of your time, no matter how boring that person seems. And if you’re lucky, perhaps more people will join your conversation group.
A.We feel bad when no one wants to talk to us.
B.The best thing to do is to try to get involved in one of the conversations.
C.Just be yourself, and allow any business partnerships to appear naturally.
D.Half the people in the group conversations are nervously trying to get involved.
E.The most important thing to remember is that most people are in the same position as you.
F.Starting a conversation with a stranger and keeping it going for the important five minutes.
G.That way, even if you’re too nervous to start a conversation, other people will understand it.
