When 和 while 都是连词，都有“当……时”的意思。
when 通常指时间的一点，表示一瞬间，从句中的谓语动词用终止性动词；它也可以表示一段时间，这时从句中的谓语动词要用延续性动词。如：
When we arrived there, it was raining. (arrive是终止性动词) 当我们到那儿时，天正在下雨。
My sister came in when I was watching TV. (watch是延续性动词)当我在看电视时，我妹妹进来了。
while 意为“正在……时”，表示在某一段时间内某动作或状态是延续的，因此它只能指一段时间，不能指时间点。While 从句中的谓语动词要用延续性动词。如：
The phone rang while we were talking. 当我们正在交谈时，电话铃响了。
when引导的从句的动作和主句的动作既可以同时发生，也可以先后发生；while 强调主句和从句的动作同时发生，且从句多用进行时态。如：
