Today, dolphins seem like part of the family. They enchant us with their willingness to please and perform. But the dolphins’ true home—the sea is an alien world and here a different side emerges. They are social creatures that communicate and cooperate, for danger can strike from anywhere.
These are bottlenose dolphins among the most inventive and intelligent hunters in the sea. Here they locate schools of small fish in the turbid channels. Then in a stunning maneuver, they rush up the mudflats creating a bow wave that drives the fish ashore.
How dolphins locate the schools of fish and coordinate their attack is not entirely known. They may use either audible or visual signals. For some reason, the dolphins always rush up the banks on their right side. Over time the teeth on that side will actually be worn down from chewing as much mud as fish. Occasionally they will work themselves completely out of the water. Being stranded up here could be fatal. As they shimmy up the mud banks it’s almost as if they’re evolving into the land creatures they once were. Some fifty million years ago, the ancestors of these air-breathing mammals ventured into the seas.
To follow dolphins in the wild is to discover one of the most remarkable adaptations in the natural world. They use their intelligence to survive, changing or inventing strategies to suit their environment. Spinner dolphins leap in what appears to a display of exuberance. In fact, they may be signaling others to join them, or coordinating movements of the pod…A kind of ling distance communication. At close range, dolphins “speak” through clicks and whistles. These signals can mean anything from “Food’s over here” to “Watch out! There’s danger!”
Questions to ask:
1. 为什么海豚就像我们家庭的一份子?
2. 海豚是如何确定鱼群的位置的?
3. 为什么海豚的牙齿会日渐磨损?

Questions to answer:
1. Why are dolphins social creatures
2. Why will the dolphins face the danger of being stranded up
3. When did dolphin’s ancestors ventured into the seas
4. How do dolphins survive
5. Please name one meaning of the signals made by the dolphins.

Kiss in the box
The story goes that some time ago, a man punished his 3-year-old daughter for wasting a piece of gold decoration paper. Money was tight so the man became angry when the child tried to use the paper to decorate a box to put under the Christmas tree. However, the little girl brought the gift to her father the next morning and said, “This is for you, Daddy.”
The man was embarrassed by his earlier bad temper, but he became angry again when he found out that the box was empty. He shouted at her, “Don’t you know, when you give someone a present, there is supposed to be something inside ” The little girl looked up at him with tears in her eyes and cried, “Oh, Daddy, it’s not empty at all. I put my kisses into the box. They’re all for you, Daddy.”
The father was touched but embarrassed again. He searched his mind but he failed to figure out words to repair a broken heart. He just put his arms around his little girl, and begged for her forgiveness. From then on, the father kept that gold box by his bed for many years. Whenever he was discouraged, he would take out an imaginary kiss and remember the love of the child who had put it there.
In a very real sense, each one of us has been given a gold container filled with unconditional love and kisses from our children, family members and friends. There is simply no other possession more precious than this.
策略
(一) 听取故事时,要注意:
1.宏观把握,注意开头句;
2.记录关键词,速度要快,记清人物、时间、地点事件的来龙去脉等。
(二) 复述故事时,要注意:
1.明确复述时使用的人称或称谓;2.代词he、she要弄清,正确使用单复数、时态、句子转承时的连词;
A girl was punished by her father for wasting a piece of gold paper. They were not rich. No wonder the father was angry. But to his embarrassment, he received from his little girl the present beautifully wrapped with the paper. His embarrassment changed into anger again when he found there was nothing in the box. He scolded his daughter and shouted that she should put something inside when sending presents to others. The girl cried and replied that she had already put her kisses into the box as the very present for her father. At the words, the man felt ashamed and what he could do was only beg his girl’s pardon. Whenever the father was depressed, he would encourage himself by taking out an imaginary kiss from the box.
In fact, everyone of us has been given the unselfish love from our family and friends, which is the most precious gift in the world.
