I’m Scott. I’m writing to express my great thanks to the Chinese Embassy for your kindness. It was with your timely help that my family could manage to leave the earthquake-hit/stricken area.
On, 13th, November, my family were enjoying a journey when a strong dangerous earthquake shook/struck/hit New Zealand. So we were trapped in Kaikoura, which was seriously attacked. The earthquake ruined our holiday, scaring us much, especially our two little children. Thank you for your trust in me, and I take it as a great honour to be able to describe the picture to you.
As the picture shows, a Chinese boy in worn clothes is absorbed in reading while a weak ray of light is shining in through a small hole in the wall. This is a well-known story from an ancient Chinese idiom, dating from the Western Han Dynasty. The boy, poor but diligent, can’t afford even a candle, so he has to drill a hole in the wall to “steal” light from his neighbor’s house to read at night. The story inspires us to spare no effort when learning, however difficult the situation may be.
Of course, things are totally different now. We still believe that hard work pays off. So we should take pains to improve ourselves by learning for the future.
