Farris Hassan, a 16-year-old high school student from Florida, decided to visit Iraq and left for the country on December 11, 2005 alone without having informed his parents.
After catching a connecting flight in Amsterdam, he arrived in Kuwait City on December 13. He called his parents on the telephone and informed them of where he was and his intention to visit Iraq. This was the first time his parents learned of his plans. He then attempted to cross the Kuwait-Iraq border by taxi, but because of tight security for the upcoming elections he was unable to pass through, and spent a week in Beirut, Lebanon. Then on December 25, he flew into Baghdad International Airport. Relatives picked him up from the airport and put him at a hotel known to frequently house American citizens.
He financed the trip and made all the arrangements himself with the money that he had saved up. The inspiration for his journey was the result of attending a class on “immersion journalism” at his school. He was working on an assignment on the war in Iraq and he wished to experience his subject matter first-hand.
Hassan’s parents were born in Iraq, but he does not speak any Arabic, making him easily stand out as a foreigner in Iraq, where kidnappings of Americans and violence are an everyday occurrence. His parents planned to take him to see Iraq once the war was over.

When Liu Xiang won the 110-meter hurdles(跨栏) at the Athens Olympics in 2004, he did it in a world record—tying time of 12.91 seconds. At that time, the world thought that Asians couldn’t run.
Shocked, a Greek TV reporter said, “In first place, it’s... it’s a Chinese man... He is Mr Liu. Congratulations to Mr Liu from China!”
The 24-year-old Liu has become a symbol of China’s national pride. He appears in many ads. He is in a textbook for students in Shanghai. Liu was even allowed to become a PhD (博士) student at a Shanghai university without taking an exam.
In every race, the Chinese people want him to break a record. He is one of our nation’s great hopes for the 2008 Beijing Olympics.
That’s why when Liu doesn’t get gold people are disappointed.“You can’t win every race. It needs the right atmosphere, a good track and the right competitors. Most importantly, you need to be on your best form,” said Liu.
He said this after setting a new world record in an international competition in Switzerland in July 2006. Liu won the race in 12.88 seconds.
“I’m nobody special,” said Liu. He trains five to six days a week. In his spare time, Liu plays online video games and enjoys karaoke. He says he has little time to think of having a girlfriend. “I don’t watch many movies either,” he added.

Teachers spend countless years trying to make history come alive for their students. But US Director Shawn Levy attempts to do this on film in the recently released “A Night in the Museum”.
The film is adapted from Milan Trenc’s book of the same name. It brings to life a world where dinosaurs wander the earth, a former president rides again, warlike early Asians return, and cowboys and Roman soldiers seek to bring back their old goals.
The family comedy stars Ben Stiller as a luckless dreamer named Larry Daley. He takes a position as a night watchman at the New York Museum of Natural History.
On Larry’s first night, he’s left alone by the three aging guards he’s replacing. They fail to inform him of the museum’s rather unusual nightlife.
Soon Larry finds himself chased down the hallways by the very lively skeleton(骸骨) of a dinosaur, in the middle of a confrontation with Asian warriors. He is caught in a territorial battle between a cowboy and a Roman general and meets face to face with former US president Teddy Roosevelt, played by Robin Williams.
They are each from an exhibit that has come to life through the magic of a priceless Egyptian tablet. While the film fails to develop very much in some areas (for example, Larry’s troubled relationship with a son), it does have enough special effects and jokes to attract the audience.
Bottom Line: Definitely not Oscar-worthy, but a great way to relax during a holiday.
44. The purpose of the passage is to _______.
A. introduce a new way of learning history
B. introduce some mysterious things in the museum
C. introduce a movie called A Night in the Museum
D. demonstrate the effect of a movie on people

47. We can infer that A Night in the Museum ______.
A. is most likely to win an Oscar

C. will satisfy people’s curiosity about ancient history
D. is a good time-killer during a holiday

When my first wartime Christmas came, I was in basic training in New Jersey and not sure if I could make it home for the holiday. Only on the afternoon of December 23 was the list of men who would have three days off post. I was one of the lucky ones.
It was Christmas Eve when I arrived, and a light snow had fallen. Mother opened the front door. I could see beyond her, into the corner of the living room where the tree had always stood. There were lights, all colors, and ornaments shining against the green of a pine.
“Where did it come from ” I asked, my old feeling returning.
“I asked the Gates boy to cut it,” my mother said. “I wouldn’t have had one just for myself, but when you called—oh, such a rush! He just brought it in this afternoon...”
The pine reached to the proper height, almost to the ceiling, and the Tree Top Krystal Star was in its place. A few green branches reached about a little awkwardly at the sides, I thought, and there was a bit of bare trunk showing in the middle. But for all its minor imperfections(不足), the tree filled the room with warm light and the whole house with the flavor of Christmas.
“It’s not like the ones you used to find,” my mother went on. “Yours were always so shapely. I suppose the Gates boy didn’t know where to look. But I couldn’t be fussy(爱挑剔的).”
“Don’t worry,” I told her. “It’s perfect.”
It wasn’t, of course, not by the rules of the old game. But at that moment I realized something for the first time: all Christmas trees are perfect.
48. From the passage, we can infer that_______.
A. the writer spent his first wartime Christmas in the army
B. no soldiers went home for Christmas during the war
C. not all soldiers had a three-day holiday
D. the writer didn’t want to go home for Christmas at first
49. When the writer got home, _______.
A. it was December 23
B. it was snowing heavily
C. he found a Christmas tree in the living room
D. the Gates boy was cutting a Christmas tree for his mother
50. From this passage, we can learn that _______.
A. the writer used to cut a beautiful Christmas tree for Christmas Day
B. his mother didn’t like perfect trees
C. his mother didn’t want to have a pine tree
D. the writer wouldn’t have a tree cut by someone else
四、任务型阅读 (共10小题; 每小题1分,满分10分)
认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入最恰当的词。
注意:每个空格1个单词。
Who are the elders in your family They are the people we used to turn to for answers and perspective. Most of all, they are the people who raised you and your loved ones and helped you grow into the people you are. For several decades, they carried the burden of caring for your family and leading it to better times. Now it’s your turn to repay them.
Unfortunately, too many people take their parents’ and grandparents’ ability to care for themselves for granted. And in a country where so many of us live hundreds of miles from our families, looking after loved ones can be difficult to accomplish remotely. Even so, you should make sure your loved ones are taken care of no matter where they live.
There are two parts to nurturing our elders. The one we focus on most is caring for their material needs. This is complicated and important stuff that requires serious effort—so much so that we often neglect the other aspect of caring for elders: tending to their hearts and souls. Here are some suggestions for the softer side of elder care.
Treat every old person in your life with respect. Although age can take on health, appearance, and manner, inside every individual is a vibrant, powerful personality. Remember to love and laugh with the elderly without condescension(恩赐) —and without restraint(拘束)!
A component of respect is being tolerant of faults. Yes, they’ve told you the same story 183 times. Yes, their favorite pastime may seem to be gossip. Yes, they can be particularly critical of you, the government, the weather, or the price of tomatoes. And yes, with love, patience, and cleverness, you can change the subject and bring out the best in them.
Alone or with your children, take your parents’, or grandparents’ oral history. Each person has a story, and older generations have faced challenges most of us have never had to consider, from drastic changes in the social climate of America to immigration stories and hard-won successes. Take the time to get to know the elders in your life as citizens of the world.
Include them in your life whenever you can. Sending a funny e-mail to friends Add seniors’ e-addresses to the list. Having a picnic Invite them along. Yes, it may mean more work for you, but remember all the times they did extra work to accommodate you when you were a child
Acknowledge their fears and frailties and when you can, step in to assist. For example, be their spokesperson when the health-care system proves too tough for them to navigate, or gently offer to help manage their financial affairs when it becomes clear they are struggling to make good choices.
