His name is James, but people call him Rocky. The name fits. He’s big, over six feet tall, and he’s tough when he needs to be. James “Rocky” Robinson lives and works in New York City’s Bedford-Stuyvesant district, one of the most impoverished (贫穷的) and dangerous neighborhoods in the United States. Yet it is here in “Bed-Stuy” that he is saving lives and reviving a community like no one has before.
In 1966, when Rocky was twenty-six years old, his seven-year-old niece was struck by a car on the street of Bed-Stuy. Had someone at the scene known first aid or CPR, she might have lived. But by the time she reached a hospital, she was dead.
His niece’s unnecessary death was one reason why Rocky became a paramedic (医务辅助人员). Working for the Emergency Medical Service of New York City, he realized that more than half the city’s emergency calls came from high-crime areas. According to Rocky, residents of high-crime minority neighborhoods like Bed-Stuy sometimes had to wait as long as 26 minutes after calling 911 for an ambulance; calls in more affluent (富裕的) white communities were answered in a fraction of the time.
Rocky decided to find out more about the problem. His research revealed that the more affluent communities had organized their own ambulance corps to supplement (补充) city services because the city was overwhelmed with calls. “If that’s the key to success,” he told his friend and EMT (emergency medical technician) colleague, Joe Perez, “we’ll start our own corps in Bed-Stuy!”
In 1988, Rocky had no idea that he and Joe would be attempting to establish the first minority-run ambulance service in the country, or just how creative he would have to be to overcome the obstacles. The pair’s first challenge was to find a location for the headquarters. They took over an abandoned building that was commonly used by drug dealers. Because there was no electricity or running water (except for the leaks in the roof) the two men worked during daylight hours. They used a two-way radio to receive emergency calls.
Although they could make do with their new headquarters, Rocky and Joe still lacked the most important component of an ambulance service: an ambulance. An old Chevrolet got them to the scenes of accidents, fires, shootings and stabbings. But the car didn’t always start. At times, they were forced to strap their kits and oxygen tanks to their backs and run on foot to the emergencies. Everyone laughed, except the victims who were still alive when Rocky and Joe arrived.

C. city services were not enough to meet people’s needs
D. James thought it was easy to establish the minority-run ambulance service

The time has arrived! Mothers may now fulfill (实现) their dreams by getting a college degree. Yes, grants (拨款) are offered by the Federal Government through the efforts of President Barrack Obama. Moms may now pursue their goals and achieve what they rightfully deserve.
Mothers continue to dream of having a college degree so that they may become members of the realm (领域) of professionals. Holding a college degree enables one to have a stable, reputable and high-paying job. The Pell Grant will fulfill that dream. It will allow mothers, who are struggling and are financially incapable, to continue their education. By just filling up the FAFSA form online, one may become a candidate for the said Grant. It is such an easy step towards getting a better future. One may choose from a number of colleges and universities which best serve her interest.
The Pell Grant is the main Federal financial aid program. This means that there are also other programs of the government which helps and encourages individuals and mothers to return and pursue a college degree. Private institutions alike are providing scholarship grants to the willing and deserving individuals. Scholarship grants may be made use of by mothers from both the government and private institutions.
Aiming for a better future requires the achievement of an education. Life would be much easier if one has finished a degree in college. It will make it possible for a mother to build a career for herself and for the welfare of her children. A higher education means a higher salary, a better workplace, and a reasonable working time. One may now enjoy life and motherhood at the same time.
Professionals or educated people are the ones who are looked up to in society. They are regarded as providers, leaders, molders and builders of the community. But the greatest admiration comes from one’s children. Children look up to people who have achieved something in life. So much more if that person is their own mother. In this way, a mother could easily instill (灌输) in her child the true meaning and value of education.

If you’re networking (建立人际关系) and nothing is happening, you might need to evaluate how you’re doing it. Maybe you show up at each event and still feel challenged by the process. You aggressively talk to people, give out your cards, call endlessly to schedule an appointment but have no real success from your efforts. To help you gain a different future, here are ten habits you should avoid.
Ineffective networkers:
1. Lack patience. They expect immediate results and want business now, not tomorrow.
2. Constantly “selling” something. They see dollar signs every time they shake hands with someone.
3. Too many choices. If they offer a variety of products, they might try too hard to tell about all of them. Offering too much information sends a confusing message making it difficult for people to send referrals (指点). Opportunities are all around us but when you’re networking, only focus on one.
4. Change positions too often. If they move from company to company or do something totally different, it might be difficult for people to keep up with them.
5. Lack manners and respect. They interrupt others, talk with food in their mouth, aren’t very polite and appear unprofessional. They call people during dinner or on the weekends without thinking whether the occasion is suitable.
6. Distributes too many cards and sales literature. They come while loading with brochures, flyers (传单), catalogues and samples.
7. Focus on themselves. Too much self-promotion can leave the other person to feel unappreciated. Every sentence begins with “I” and is all about their business.
8. “Taking” instead of “giving”. They don’t realize what other people sense when they are being very selfish. Others may think that they are being taken advantage of.
9. Lack authenticity (可靠性) and personal values. They may create unrealistic expectations and not deliver on their promises. Sometimes doing things without integrity (正直) possibly twists the truth.
10. Poor communication and interpersonal skills. They have trouble speaking effectively, building relationships and following up.
Networking is a process that is an investment of time and money. If you find you’re doing any of these habits, consider learning how to improve on these and maximize your results while networking. You’ll start to get better at connecting with people and obtain more referrals.
43. According to the text, some people didn’t succeed in networking because .
A. they didn’t make efforts B. they didn’t behave effectively
C. they didn’t pay enough money D. they didn’t spend enough time
44. According to the second habit, we shouldn’t when we are networking.
A. make friends B. talk about dollars
C. shake hands with everyone
D. pay attention to money only
45. When talking with others, you should .
A. give out your cards and brochures every now and then
B. talk about the quality of your product as much as possible
C. let other people express themselves completely
D. interrupt others when they make a mistake
46. Which of the following is NOT correct about a salesman’s behavior
A. He offers too much self-promotion during the conversation.
B. He considers when he can get what he expects carefully.
C. He only focuses on one opportunity when networking.
D. He keeps his promises and doesn’t expect too much from others.

The next thing I(Jane Eyre) remember is, waking up with a feeling as if I had had a frightful nightmare, and seeing before me a terrible red glare, crossed with thick black bars. I heard voices, too, speaking with a hollow sound, and as if muffled(含糊) by a rush of wind or water: anxiety, uncertainty, and an all-predominating sense of terror confused my faculties(能力). Before long, I became aware that someone was handling me; lifting me up and supporting me in a sitting position, and that more tenderly than I had ever been raised or upheld before. I rested my head against a pillow or an arm, and felt easy.
In five minutes more the cloud of bewilderment(混乱) dissolved: I knew quite well that I was in my own bed, and that the red glare was the nursery fire. It was night: a candle burnt on the table; Bessie stood at the bed-foot with a basin in her hand, and a gentleman sat in a chair near my pillow, leaning over me.
I felt an inexpressible relief, a comforting feeling of protection and security, when I knew that there was a stranger in the room, an individual not belonging to Gateshead, and not related to Mrs. Reed. Turning from Bessie (though her presence was far less unpleasant to me than that of Abbot, for instance, would have been), I examined the face of the gentleman: I knew him; it was Mr. Lloyd, an apothecary, sometimes called in by Mrs. Reed when the servants were ailing: for herself and the children she employed a physician.
“Well, who am I ” he asked.
I pronounced his name, offering him at the same time my hand: he took it, smiling and saying, “We shall do very well by-and-by.” Then he laid me down, and addressing Bessie, charged her to be very careful that I was not disturbed during the night. Having given some further directions, and suggestions that he should call again the next day, he departed; to my grief: I felt so sheltered and befriended while he sat in the chair near my pillow; and as he closed the door after him, all the room darkened and my heart again sank: inexpressible sadness weighed it down.
“Do you feel as if you should sleep, Miss ” asked Bessie, rather softly.
Scarcely dared I answer her; for I feared the next sentence might be rough. “I will try.”
“Would you like to drink, or could you eat anything ”
“No, thank you, Bessie.”
“Then I think I shall go to bed, for it is past twelve o’clock; but you may call me if you want anything in the night.”
Wonderful politeness this! It emboldened(给……壮胆) me to ask a question.
“Bessie, what is the matter with me Am I ill ”
“You fell sick, I suppose, in the red-room with crying; you’ll be better soon, no doubt.”
Bessie went into the housemaid’s apartment, which was near. I heard her say—
“Sarah, come and sleep with me in the nursery; I daren’t for my life would be alone with that poor child tonight: she might die; it’s such a strange thing she should have that fit: I wonder if she saw anything. Missis was rather too hard.”
47. How did Jane Eyre feel when she woke up
A. She felt frightened because she had a nightmare.
B. She felt afraid because she saw a terrible red fire.
C. She felt confused because she could not remember what had happened.
D. She felt easy because she was lifted up and treated tenderly by her parents.
48. Which of the following sentences is TRUE according to the passage
A. Jane Eyre liked Bessie more than Abbot.
B. Jane Eyre liked Mrs. Reed because she was her aunt.
C. Jane Eyre didn’t like anybody who belonged to Gateshead.
D. Jane Eyre didn’t like Mr. Lloyd.
49. Which of the following words is closest to the underlined word “apothecary” in meaning
A. Priest. B. Doctor. C. Teacher. D. Volunteer.
50. Why do you think Bessie treated Jane Eyre so kindly
A. Because she was her friend and servant.
B. Because she was always treating her kindly.
C. Because Jane Eyre was ill and Mr. Lloyd told her to take good care of Jane.
D. Because she feared that Jane Eyre would die and thought Mrs. Reed was too hard on Jane.
四、任务型阅读 (共10小题;每小题1分,满分10分)
请认真阅读下列短文,并根据所读内容在文章后表格中的空格里填入一个最恰当的单词。
A Sino-American summit in Beijing has produced no breakthroughs, but vows(声明) of cooperation from the leaders of the two countries.
U.S. President Barack Obama spent several hours on closed-door talks with Hu Jintao. The two met after a welcoming ceremony at the Great Hall of the People. The ceremony was formal and brief, leaving as much time as possible for a set of meetings with a full agenda.
There were no breakthroughs. Instead, there was a continuation of a process. President Hu says they talked about everything from the global economy, to non-proliferation(不扩散) to climate change. He says they made progress and stressed the need for concrete action to meet what he calls common challenges. Obama said, with all that is happening in the world today, cooperation between the United States and China has never been more important. He said, “That is why the United States welcomes China’s efforts in playing a greater role on the world stage—a role in which a growing economy is joined by growing responsibilities.” Mr. Obama says China’s partnership is important in ending the current global economic recession. He mentioned the ongoing dispute over the value of China’s currency and spoke once again of the need to seek more balanced economic growth around the world.
In his prepared statement, President Hu talked about areas of agreement. He says the United States and China are expanding cooperation in a number of fields, most notably in the promotion of clean energy.
President Obama says there can be no solution to the global challenge of climate change without the active involvement of Washington and Beijing. He also spoke about the need to work together to deal with Iran and North Korea and their nuclear ambitions. China has played a key role in negotiations with the North Koreans and there were indications that President Obama would seek China’s help in increasing pressure on Tehran. He said, “Iran has an opportunity to present and show its peaceful intentions, but if it fails to take this opportunity, there will be consequences.”
However, while praising the benefits of ties with Beijing, Mr. Obama made it clear that when there are differences, he will speak up with China’s leaders. He talked about human rights in general, and Tibet in particular. The president said, “While we recognize that Tibet is part of the People’s Republic of China, the United States supports dialogues between the Chinese government and representatives of the Dalai Lama to settle any concerns and differences that the two sides may have.”

Reading Selectively or Extensively
Yesterday I learned it from a text that since it is impossible for us to read all kinds of books, we must learn to pick and choose the materials we read.
In fact, people have different opinions about reading. Some hold the view that we should read selectively while others think that we should read extensively. Those who hold the first opinion think that one’s time and energy are limited and one can never read as many books as he wishes. However, those who hold the second view think that to know the world from all perspectives one should absorb adequate knowledge by reading extensively.
Personally, I’m in favor of the former opinion. Admittedly, we can absorb knowledge by reading extensively, but it doesn’t mean that we should read without selection. Since our time and energy are limited, we should devote them to reading relevant and beneficial books. It’s a waste of time reading irrelevant books. Furthermore, some books are harmful. If we don’t read selectively, we’ll be misled by harmful books.
