Death Valley is one of the most famous deserts in the United States, covering a wide area with its alkali sand. Almost 20 percent of this area is well below sea level, and Badwater, a salt water pool, is about 280 feet below sea level and the lowest point in the United States.
Long ago the Panamint Indians called this place “Tomesha”-the land of fire. Death Valley’s present name dates back to 1849, when a group of miners coming across from Nevada became lost in its unpleasantness and hugeness and their adventure turned out to be a sad story. Today Death Valley has been declared a National Monument and is crossed by several well-marked roads where good services can be found easily. Luckily the change created by human settlement has hardly ruined the special beauty of this place.
Here nature created a lot of surprising, almost like the sights on the moon, ever-changing as the frequent wind moves the sand about, showing the most unusual colors. One of the most astonishing and variable parts of Death Valley is the Devil’ s Golf Course, where it seems hard for one to tell reality from terrible dreams. Sand sculptures stand on a frightening ground, as evening shadows move and lengthen.

Probably you have seen photographs of the Grand Canyon, the great valley in the desert country of Arizona. But you must go there yourself to feel its true size and beauty. The Grand Canyon is one of the greatest natural wonders of the world.
The Colorado River formed the Grand Canyon over millions of years. Slowly, the river cut down through hard rock. At the same time, the land was rising,Today, the Canyon is one and a half kilometers deep and 445 kilometers long. The oldest rocks at the bottom of the canyon are more than l billion years old. The width varies from about 200metres to 29 kilometers across. The rim(边缘)or top of the canyon is about 2,300metresa-bove sea level on the South Rim,and about 3,000 meters on the other side, the North Rim. As a result, there are different kinds of plants and animals on opposite sides of the canyon. The South Rim is dry desert country. The North Rim has tall forests.
The canyon looks different at different times of day,and in different seasons and weather. At sunrise and sunset the red, gold, brown, and orange colors of the rocks are especially clear and bright. In winter, the canyon is partly covered with snow.
The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best. Most visitors come to the South Rim and stay in campgrounds or hotels. Every point along the canyon’s edge offers a different view.
The North Rim of the Canyon is quieter. It takes all day to drive there from the South Rim because there is only one bridge a cross the Colorado River. On the way,you go through Nevada Indian lands, and a colorful pink desert called “The Painted Desert”.
You can walk down into the Grand Canyon,or you can go down on the back of a mule. You can also take a boat trip down the Colorado River, and camp on the beaches at night. But whether you see the Grand Canyon from the top or the bottom,it will be an experience that you will never forget.

Do you know that vegetables can grow in the climates they are not used to do Cool climate vegetables like asparagus(芦笋) are now able to be grown in places shot as Hawaii. In Hawaii, marine engineers have been able to actually let you believe such vegetables that they are living in cooler climates. In that way they grow faster and taste better. What these engineers have been using is very simply cold sea water. How did they use it They place pipes in the soil and cold water flowing through them cools the earth. This causes plant groh and enables gardeners in tropical climates to grow crops from cooler climates. Also some of these pipes are exposed to the air and they make the air “wet” and thus water the gardens. What especially makes people happy about this process is that nothing to the natural conditions is being used. Another new use for cold ocean water is to cool buildings. Engineers believe that for example the entire west coast of the United States could be air-conditioned using sea water.
64.What does the new system enable the gardeners to do

In the late 1960's, many people in North America turned their attention to environmental problems, and new steel and glass skyscrapers were widely criticized. Ecologists pointed out that a forest of tall buildings in a city often overburdens public transportation and parking lots.?
Skyscrapers are also consumers and wasters of electric power. In one recent year, the addition of 17 million square feet of skyscraper office space in New York City raised the peak daily demand for electricity by 120,000 kilowatts—enough to supply the entire city of Albany, New York, for a day.
Glass-walled skyscrapers can be especially wasteful. The heat loss through a wall of hawfinch plate glass is more than ten times that through a typical brick wall filled with insulation(绝缘)board. To lessen the strain on heating and air-conditioning equipment, builders of skyscrapers have begun to use double-glaze panels of glass, and reflective glasses coated with silver or gold mirror films that reduce glare(眩目的光)as well as heat gain. However, mirror walled skyscrapers raise the temperature of the surrounding air and affect neighboring buildings.
Skyscrapers put a strain on a city's sanitation facilities(卫生设备), too. If fully occupied, the two World Trade Center towers in New York City would alone produce 2.25 million gallons of wastes each year-as much a city of Stanford, Connecticut, which has a population of more than 109,000.
Skyscrapers also affect television reception, block bird flyways and air traffic. In Boston in the late 1960's, some people even feared that shadows from skyscrapers would kill the grass on Boston Common.
Still, people continue to build skyscrapers for all the reasons that they have always built them-personal pride and the desire of owners to have the largest possible amount of space to rent.
68.The main purpose of the passage is to______.
A. compare skyscrapers with other modern structures
B. describe some architectural designs of skyscrapers
C. describe skyscrapers and their effect on the environment
D. encourage using bricks in the construction of skyscrapers
69.According to the passage, in the late 1960's some residents of Boston were concerned with which aspect of skyscrapers
A. The noise from their construction.
B. The high cost of renting an office.
C. The harmful effects on the city's grass.

For years children in the industrial areas of Europe and America seldom left their smoky cities to see the beauties of the countryside. Not that the woods and fields were always far away, but they were too far from the city to permit people to make a round trip between morning and nightfall. What's more, factory workers did not have enough money to send their children on country holidays away from home.
In 1907 a young German schoolmaster had an idea which changed this state of affairs. He decided to turn his little schoolhouse into a dormitory for the summer holidays. Anyone who brought his sleeping bag and cooking equipment along could stay there for a very small amount of money. The idea was a success. A few years later the schoolhouse was far too small to hold so many young people who wanted to stay there. So, a dormitory was set up in an old castle nearby. This was the first Youth Hostel.
Today young students and workers of every country can meet in the hostels and get to know each other. Some spend a week or more in the same hostel, seeing the surrounding sights and meeting the people of the area. Other youths go on foot or by bicycle from place to place, spending a night or two in one hostel, and then going to the next.
Sometimes an informal program will be organized after the meal, with dances, songs, or short talks followed by a question period. One can _________________ about other places, just by meeting people who come from these places. For this reason, a few weeks spent "hostelling" can be just as useful a part of one's education as classes in school.

The view from the South Rim of the Grand Canyon is the best.
只有C项是具体事实:cool climate vegetables are now able to be grown…符合
文中的the new system。
66. D 要求考生指出文章的topic(论题),subject(主题),title(标题),main idea(大意)等。sea water在原文中直接出现两次,间接出现三次:cold water, cold ocean water, How did they use it 等。
infer,imply(暗示),suggest, conclude, assume(suppose)等常用于这类题中。
