For many years, environmental problems have been a major concern to people. Almost all things are related to the word “Green”, say, green buildings. A green building means not only the color of the paint. Also, it refers to environmentally friendly houses, factories and offices.
Green building means “reducing the impact of the building on the land”, Taryn Holowka of the US Green Building Council in Washington D.C. said. According to Holowka, buildings account for 65 percent of total US electricity use. But green buildings can reduce energy and water use. Also, the buildings are often located near public transportation such as buses and subways, so that people can drive their cars less. That could be good for the environment, because cars use lots of gas and give off pollution. Green buildings are often built on developed land, so that the buildings don't destroy forests.
Marty Dettling is the project manager for a building that put these ideas into action. The Solaire has been called the country's first green high-rise building. According to Dettling, “We've reduced our energy use by one third and our water by 50 percent.”
The Solaire cuts energy in part by using solar power. “On the surface of the building we have solar panels(电池板)which change the sun's energy into electricity,” Dettling explained.
The Solaire also has lights that automatically turn off when people leave the room. In addition, the building has lots of windows, allowing people to use the sun for light during the day. The Solaire cuts water by reusing it.
Not everyone is eager to move into a green building, however. Some people think that things like solar panels cost more money than more traditional energy source. Anyhow, Holowka said, “It is going to take off.”
56.“A green building” most refers to a(n) _______________building according to the passage.
A. not ripe or modern B. covering green color
C. environmentally friendly D. fresh or new
57.All of the following are the reasons why green buildings are environmentally friendly EXCEPT that_______________.
A. they can reduce energy and water use in many ways
B. they are often built on an area of land which has already been used for buildings
C. people can collect energy from sunlight to heat water and produce electricity
D. they are equipped with lots of modern but cheaper equipment
58.According to the passage, green buildings don't usually stand on faraway and inconvenient areas because_______________.
A. the places will cause a lot of trouble and inconvenience to construction work
B. cars will give off more pollution and more forests will be destroyed
C. the environment of the places is not better than that of big cities
D. the places are poorly equipped and unfriendly
59.The main idea of the passage may be_______________.
A. settling designed the first green building in the US
B. energy shortage calls for buildings of new design
C. the Solaire serves as a model of high buildings
D. green buildings help save environment
B
It's impolite to spit out the first bite of your dinner. But to a type of Australian snake, this rude behavior is a matter of life and death.
The snake, called a floodplain death adder(蝰蛇),eats two types of frogs that are hard to stomach. The frogs produce chemicals to defend them from predators(猎食者).
One of these species, the Dahl's frog, can kill a snake that tries to eat it. The other species, the marbled frog, is less dangerous but still tough to eat. When attacked, it produces a glue like substance. Leaves and branches get caught up in this material, making a big sticky mess that gets in the way of anything trying to swallow it. A marbled frog can even get stuck on the head of an attacking snake.
Both frogs have good defense methods. But the floodplain death adder knows how to get around each of them.
Floodplain death adders quickly strike these frogs, using their poisonous teeth to inject poison. But then, instead of swallowing their dinner immediately, the snakes sit back and wait for their preys to become safe to eat. That’s because both the Dahl's frog's protective toxin(毒素) and the marbled frog's glue break down over time. After a while, the frog toxin is no longer poisonous and the glue is no longer sticky.
The two substances break down at different rates, and floodplain death adders seem to know the difference. An adder waits for a different length of time depending on the species of frog it just struck.
The stickiness of the marbled frog glue decreased by as much as two thirds after just 10 minutes. And that's just about how long an adder waits before eating a marbled frog.
On the other hand, the snakes wait for about 40 minutes before eating a Dahl's frog. That’s enough time for the frog's toxin to break down into harmless substances.
But even a quick strike gives a taste of the Dahl's frog's toxin. After striking such a frog, a floodplain death adder thrashes(翻腾) around and lies on its back with its mouth open. It’s like the snake has just had a mouthful of chili pepper.
By comparison, when given frogs that have no chemical defenses, floodplain death adders eat their prey immediately after striking. Snakes, despite the fact that they've got this tiny pea size brain are clearly capable of recognizing what kind of frog they've bitten.

One of the qualities that most people admire in others is the willingness to admit one's mistakes. It is extremely hard sometimes to say a simple thing like “I was wrong about that,” and it is even harder to say, “I was wrong, and you were right about that.”
I had an experience recently with someone admitting to me that he had made a mistake fifteen years ago. He told me he had been the manager of a certain grocery store in the neighborhood where I grew up, and he asked me if I remembered the egg cartons. Then he related an incident and I began to remember clearly the incident he was describing.
I was about eight years old at the time, and I had gone into the store with my mother to do the weekly grocery shopping. On that day, I must have found my way to the dairy food department where the incident took place.
There must have been a special sale on eggs that day because there was an impressive display of eggs in dozen and half dozen cartons. The cartons were stacked(堆放)three or four feet high. I must have stopped in front of a display to admire the stacks. Just then a woman came by pushing her grocery cart and knocked off the stacks of cartons. For some reason, I decided it was up to me to put the display back together, so I went to work.
The manager heard the noise and came rushing over to see what had happened. When he appeared, I was on my knees examining some of the cartons to see if any of the eggs were broken, but to him it looked as though I was the criminal. He severely scolded me and wanted me to pay for any broken eggs. I protested my innocence and tried to explain, but it did no good. Even though I quickly forgot all about the incident, obviously the manager did not.

C. would like to tell people never to be fooled by an egg sale
D. expects the woman to say sorry to him for the mistake she made

Rachel Carson, a well-known nature author in America, was happiest writing about the strength and stability of natural systems. Her books mainly described the inter connectedness of nature and all living things.
Completing Silent Spring took Carson four years. First published in The New Yorker in June 1962,the book alarmed readers across America. It described how DDT entered the food chain and accumulated (堆积) in the fatty tissues of animals, including human beings, and caused cancer and genetic damage.
Carson begins by describing exactly these effects in the first chapter, creating strong images and drawing the readers in. As the book continues, she gives various examples of how insecticides(杀虫剂) are not only unsuccessful, but actually very costly and damaging. She also explains about the biological controls which are less expensive and much more efficient.
A single application on a crop, she wrote, killed insects for weeks and months, and not only the targeted insects but countless more, and remained poisonous in the environment even after it was washed out by rainwater. Carson concluded that DDT and other pesticides had definitely harmed birds and animals and had destroyed the entire world's food supply. The book's most famous chapter, A Fable for Tomorrow, described a nameless American town where all life—from fish to birds to apple blossoms to human children—had been “silenced” by the harmful effects of DDT.
The most important effect of Silent Spring, though, was a new public awareness that nature was so easily destroyed by human intervention. Rachel Carson had made a brave proposal: that, at times, technological progress is so basically at odds with(与……不一致) natural processes that it must be prevented.

C. aware of the necessity of environmental protection
D. rethink the harmful effects of developing industry

Outside her shabby cottage, old Mrs. Tailor was hanging out laundry on a wire line, unaware that some children lay hidden in the leaves of a nearby tree watching her every move. They were determined to find out if she really was a witch.
They watched as she took a broomstick to clean the dirt from her stone steps. But, much to their disappointment, she did not mount the broomstick and take flight. Suddenly, the old lady's work was interrupted by the cackling of her hen-a signal that an egg had been laid in the warm nest on top of the haystack.
The old broomstick was put aside as she hobbled off towards the haystack followed by Sooty, a black cat she had rescued from a fox trap some time back. With only three legs, it was hard for Sooty to keep up with the old lady. The cat provided proof- the children were sure that only a witch would own a black cat with three legs.
There, standing on a wooden box, was Mrs. Tailor, stretching out to gather her precious egg. Taking the egg in one of her hands, she began to climb down when, without warning, the box broke and the old lady fell.
“We have to go and help her,” whispered Amy.
“What if it is a trick?” replied Ben.
“Don't be silly, Ben. If she were a witch, she would have turned us into frogs already,” reasoned Meg. “Come on Amy, let’s go.” The girls climbed down the tree and ran all the way to the haystack.
Approaching carefully, they could see a wound on the old lady's face. She had knocked her head on a stone and her ankle was definitely broken. “Go and get Dad,” Amy yelled to her brother. “Tell him about the accident.”
The boys did not need another excuse to leave. They ran as fast as they could for help, hoping that Mrs. Tailor would not wake and turn the girls into frogs.

If you are ever in Buffalo, New York, and stop by the St. Mary’s School for the Deaf, you will be greeted by an impressive statue of the French teacher of the deaf, Abe Charles Michel De l’Epee (1712-1789). He invented a finger alphabet, which is still in use. People can make the sign for letters and spell words with their hands, and deaf people can “read” and understand them.
Around the whole world, there are special TV news programs for deaf people. Usually the newsreader tells the news in sign language with the words appearing on the screen. The actors in the Theatre of Deaf use hand signs. Putting two hands together means a sandwich. Making a roof with two hands shows a house. And one finger in front of one’s mouth can mean being quiet.
It is not just deaf and hard of hearing children who use sign language. Another large number of sign language users are hearing nonverbal children who are nonverbal because of some diseases, and brain disorders or speech disorders. For parents, sign language provides a way of quick communication, especially for those whose attention spans (跨度) may be very short or language very limited.
And when you wave to a friend, you are using sign language. When you smile at someone, you are saying, “I want to be friendly”. Babies who ________ can point at things. They are using sign language. A policeman who wants to stop the traffic holds up his hand. He is using sign language as well.

Dear Sirs/Madams,
I find that roads here are busy and cars move slowly. Buses always get stuck in the traffic jams. The traffic is getting worse as a result of the increasing number of cars and terrible road conditions. Here I would like to give some suggestions.
The number of the cars into the city center should be limited. You can also introduce a “congestion charge” as London did. You should build large car parks outside the city and then motorists could take a bus into the city center. At the same time, building large car parks inside the city can solve many parking problems too.
In addition, the government needs to build more underground lines, and improve the road conditions. What’s more, anyone who disobeys traffic regulation will be fined 50-100 Yuan.
I hope these suggestions are useful.
Yours sincerely,
Li Hua
