The early 1900s were very different from today. Toys, though they have evolved in many ways, were still the delight of children everywhere.
Theodore Roosevelt's Presidency marks the beginning of the “Teddy Bear.” In the year 1902,toy bears were named “Teddy” after the president's nickname. The Teddy Bear became known worldwide, and is still known and loved today. It was only a few years later that the Teddy Bears were mass produced.
In 1913,an item called the Erector Set was invented. It was a steel, motorized toy that children could use to build models of anything. Its creator was A.C. Gilbert, a medical doctor.
Charles Pajeau created a similar wooden set called Tinker Toys in the year 1914.Tinker Toys were made for younger children.
Raggedy Ann dolls first came on the scene after newspaper cartoonist Johnny Gruelle reproduced the doll he made for his daughter. That was in 1915.
The following year, an architect's son named John Lloyd Wright, invented Lincoln Logs, which were interlocked to make structures.
Two years after Mickey Mouse was created, stuffed(填塞)Mickey Mouse dolls were made by Charlotte Clark. This was the start of Disney merchandise.

Finally, in 1940, model airplanes were mass produced. They started out as a way for manufacturers to sell planes to the military, but later caught on as a toy.

The store is comprised of 6 floors and the men increase in positive attributes as the shopper goes up the flights. There is, however, a catch. As you open the door to any floor you may choose a man from that floor, but if you go up a floor, you cannot go back down except to exit the building.

The dollar is becoming weaker and weaker. What effects will it have?Look at the record high price of oil. Even if the same amount of oil is being pumped out of the ground, since it is traded in dollars and the dollar has weakened, the price of oil has increased to make up for the lost value of the dollar, creating a sort of bad cycle.
Oil producing countries don't want to keep all the dollars they are getting for their oil, since it's declining in value, so they exchange their dollars for Euros or other currencies. That pushes more dollars back out into currency markets, which in turn pushes down the dollar's value.
One expert told ABC News that Russia used to have 90 percent of its financial reserves in dollars. It now has 45 percent in dollars, 45 percent in Euros and 10 percent in British pounds.
In the US itself, the news is mixed. It’s good, because it makes what we produce here cheaper to sell in foreign markets, and that in turn spurs(刺激) exports of our products around the world. That translates into more manufacturing and more jobs.
But a weak dollar is bad, because it leads to inflation (通货膨胀) in this country. Imports from foreign countries will become more expensive, and in particular, oil will be more expensive. That puts pressure on businesses to increase prices for anything that uses oil or products that come from overseas. One benefit for American shoppers is that China has largely pegged its currency to ours, so that keeps the price of Chinese made goods low and therefore, keeps a check on inflation.
65.Which of the following would be the best title for this passage?_______________

A. the American economy is having a hard time
B. Russia is making the situation worse on purpose
C. American export businesses would like a stronger dollar

A. The rise of the price of oil.
B. More jobs in the USA.
C. The occurrence of inflation.
D. More imports in the USA.

A. show how hard the lives of Americans are

As a solo artist, Brightman has sold 26 million albums and two million DVDs in 34 countries. Her musical styles put opera, pop and jazz together. She is popular in the States but not here (Britain) – the image of her and her second husband, Andrew Lloyd Webber (he much older, she his muse) seems for ever frozen.
The 47-year-old singer talks about the new album Symphony that came out of a “very dark time”, including her decision to give up trying to have children. “People have suggested I could adopt,” Brightman says. “But work is central to my life now. And so I am going to put it to one side. After a while not having children becomes the norm and perhaps that might sound alarming, to parents especially, but I have never known anything different. I’m not hurt by not having children. My life and career are incredibly rich.”
Talking about growing up in a large family in Berkhamsted (father a property developer who later committed suicide), she says: “I was gifted as a child, and very musical. I seemed to be good at anything to do with the arts. At 5 I understood the music I was dancing to and had an eye for costume.” She first appeared in a West End musical at 11 and hated boarding school.
Brightman led the saucy dance troupe(辣妹三人舞) Hot Gossip and had her first hit with I Lost My Heart to a Starship Trooper in 1978. At 18 she married a music manager called Andrew Graham Stewart. “I was probably in love but I can’t remember. Girls change such a lot between 18 and 22. It didn’t really work out.” In 1981 she was spotted by Lloyd Webber. She became his leading lady in Song and Dance, Requiem and Phantom of the Opera. They married in 1984.
Brightman says she felt hostility(敌意) “from the beginning. I haven’t tried to understand it. I’ve done very well everywhere else, especially the US, where I now live, I just accept it for what it is. The more you are away from Britain, the more you appreciate it. But I don’t miss it, although I miss my family. Our profession can be uncomfortable but I enjoy what I do. I get on with it.”
70. The first paragraph tells us that______________.
A. Brightman is very popular around the world except in America
B. Brightman’s musical style is a mixture of opera, pop and jazz
C. the British people don’t like her for her style of music
D. Brightman is much older than Andrew Lloyd Webber
71. Brightman decided to give up having children because______________.
A. she could adopt one
B. her life and career were unbelievably rich without children
C. she felt it normal not to have children
D. she was too busy
72. What does the author try to say in the last paragraph by quoting Brightman’s words
______________
A. Brightman has to accept the fact that she is liked in Britain
B. Brightman lives in America but she loves her own country

Almost everybody in America will spend a part of his or her life behind a shopping cart. They will, in a lifetime, push the chrome-plated contraptions many miles. But few will know-or even think to ask-who it was that invented them.
Sylvan N. Goldman invented the shopping cart in 1937. At that time he was in the supermarket business. Every day he would see shoppers lugging groceries around in baskets they had to carry.
One day Goldman suddenly had the idea of putting baskets on wheels. The wheeled baskets would make shopping much easier for his customers, and would help to attract more business.
On June 4, 1937, Goldman’s first carts were ready for use in his market. He was terribly excited on the morning of that day as customers began arriving. He couldn’t wait to see them using his invention.
But Goldman was disappointed. Most shoppers gave the carts a long look, but hardly anybody would give them a try.
After a while, Goldman decided to ask customers why they weren’t using his carts. “Don’t you think this arm is strong enough to carry a shopping basket ” one shopper replied.
But Goldman wasn’t beaten yet. He knew his carts would be a great success if only he could persuade people to give them a try. To this end, Goldman hired a group of people to push carts around his market and pretend they were shopping! Seeing this, the real customers gradually began copying the phony(假冒的)customers.
As Goldman had hoped, the carts were soon attracting larger and larger numbers of customers to his market. But not only did more people come-those who came bought more. With larger, easier-to-handle baskets, customers unconsciously bought a greater number of items than before.
Today’s shopping carts are five times larger than Goldman’s original model. Perhaps that’s one reason Americans today spend more than five times as much money on food each year as they did before 1937-before the coming of the shopping cart.

23.B by accident“无意地,偶然地”;by design“故意地”;by choice“出于选择”;by mistake“错误地”。

25.B switch to转变,改变;switch off关闭,对……不理睬;switch on打开;switch over转变,转接。

say sorry to“向…… C项的正确形式应为make an apology。
nothing more than仅仅,只不过,选择B项。 不如;better than好于,胜过;other than不同于,除了。
31.C hold back克制,阻止,与from连用;hold off不接近;hold on握住不放,坚持,等一会儿;hold up举起,延迟。

39.C 由本空后的“showing not the least sign of artistic talent”可知,罗塞蒂认为这些画毫无价值,画的作者没有艺术天赋。
42.A lie to sb.“对某人说谎”,故选A。
44.D take up one's time“占用某人的时间”。
48.A 由下文“This young student,whoever he is,has great talent”可知,罗塞蒂认为这些画很“好”。
51.C stick to“坚持,不放弃”,相当于insist on。
55.C too soon在此修饰“gave up”。
56.D 根据第二段第2句“...toy bears were named “Teddy” after the president's nickname.”
根据文中关键信息“Charles Pajeau created a similar wooden set called Tinker Toys in the year 1914.”
After a while not having children becomes the norm and perhaps that might sound alarming, to parents especially, but I have never known anything different,布莱曼并没有觉得没有孩子有什么不正常的。
I just accept it for what it is说明布莱曼只有接受现实而已。
76. shopping carts
77. It was to make shopping easier and attract more business.
78.Because few customers used his carts.
79. Because he wanted to promote his shopping carts.
80.He was a smart businessman. He invented the shopping cart and made it accepted by customers. Or: He was smart but he shouldn’t have used tricks to attract customers.

Dear Peter,
I’m glad to receive your letter asking for my advice on how to learn Chinese well.
Here are a few suggestions. First, it is important to take a Chinese course, as you’ll be able
to learn from the teacher and practice with your fellow students. Then, it also helps to watch TV
and read books, newspapers and magazines in Chinese whenever possible. Besides, it should be a good idea to learn and sing Chinese songs, because by doing so you’ll learn and remember Chinese words more easily. You can also make more Chinese friends. They will tell you a lot about China and help you learn Chinese.
Try and write me in Chinese next time.
Best wishes.
Yours
Li Hua
