A
Having
lived
in
California
until
1970,my
family
has
felt
a
number
of
earthquakes.We
have
been
fortunate,however,to
have
suffered
no
bodily
harm
or
property
damage.
There
is
a
website
that
lists
all
California
earthquakes
recorded
from
1769
to
the
present.The
site
lists
the
dates
and
times
as
well
as
the
magnitude
(震级)
and
the
exact
location
of
any
quake
that
measured
more
than
6.0.There
are
only
a
few
quakes
that
stand
out
in
my
memory
and,luckily,none
is
shown
in
the
website.So,my
personal
experience
with
earthquakes
might
be
considered
insignificant.
There
are
three
earthquakes
that
are
difficult
to
forget.The
first
one
was
in
1955
and
our
oldest
daughter
was
walking
with
me
in
our
backyard
in
Redwood
City
in
California.As
the
shaking
became
stronger
I
held
her
to
me
with
one
arm
as
I
held
on
to
one
of
our
fruit
trees
with
the
other.All
three
of
us
(my
daughter,I
and
the
tree)
shook
for
two
or
three
minutes
that
to
us
felt
like
hours.
The
second
one
was
in
1963.Our
entire
family
was
visiting
Disneyland
in
Southern
California.The
earth
started
to
shake
just
as
we
were
beginning
to
walk
from
our
hotel
toward
the_famous_landmark.
My
third
experience
with
an
earthquake
was
a
lonely
one
in
California.It
was
in
my
sixties
and
I
was
alone
in
an
old
church.As
the
building
started
to
shake,I
quickly
headed
for
the
door
to
go
outside.I
remember
I
said
a
little
prayer—something
like“Help
me
get
out
of
here
in
time,Dear
Heavenly
Father”.Minutes
later,I
was
safe
outside.

B
Natural
disasters
have
hit
Asia
hard
in
recent
years,taking
hundreds
of
thousands
of
lives.But
while
these
tragedies
have
destroyed
homes
and
lives,they
have
also
created
heroes.
The
hero:Muelmar
Magallanes
The
story:As
the
heavy
rain
was
destroying
homes
and
villagers
in
Manila,the
18?year?old
worker
jumped
into
action.Muelmar
swam
through
the
floods
(洪水)
and
pulled
30
of
his
neighbors
to
safety.After
pushing
a
mother
and
baby
to
shore
on
a
small
boat,the
tired
hero
was
lost
in
the
water,and
his
body
was
discovered
the
next
day.“He
gave

said
Menchie
Penalosa,the
child’s
mother.“I
will
never
forget
him.”
The
hero:
Tilly
Smith
The
story:You
never
know
when
those
lessons
learned
in
geography
class
will
be
put
to
good
use.For
Smith,just
10
years
old
at
the
time,being
able
to
recognize
the
warning
signs
of
a
tsunami
(海啸),saved
about
100
lives
at
a
holiday
center
in
Thailand.The
English
schoolgirl
was
walking
on
a
beach
in
Phuket
when
she
noticed
the
water
was
coming
in,but
it
wasn’t
going
out
again.A
tsunami,she
realized,was
just
minutes
away.Her
father
told
everyone
to
leave
the
beach.That
beach
was
one
of
the
few
in
Phuket
where
no
one
was
killed
or
seriously
injured.
The
heroes:Aisah,Neneh,Azmi,Nuraida
and
Sulastri
The
story:For
these
five
women
from
the
village
of
Lampaseh,the
tsunami
took
everything.That
day,Aisah
lost
her
17?day?old
granddaughter,Neneh
lost
seven
of
her
nine
children,Azmi
lost
her
parents,Nuraida
lost
three
of
her
sisters
and
brothers,and
Sulastri
lost
her
husband,daughter
and
youngest
son.All
lost
their
homes.Everything
was
gone
except
for
their
strong
belief.Soon
after
the
tsunami,the
five
women
went
back
to
clean
up
the
village.These
women
lost
nearly
everything,except
their
determination
(决心)
to
rebuild
their
lives.
5.What
happened
to
Muelmar?
A.He
lost
his
family
in
a
flood.

was
found
dead
on
a
boat.

her
father

be
described
as________.
A.clever
B.honest
C.strong?minded
D.kind?hearted
8.What’s
the
best
title
for
the
text?
A.Meet
the
heroes
created
by
disasters
B.Create
a
better
world
together
C.The
worst

C
That
woman
carried
a
new
blanket
(毛毯)
over
her
arm.Wordlessly,she
gave
it
to
me.
“Is
it
finished?”
I
asked.
She
shook
her
head.“No.It
is
ready,”
she
replied.I
handed
her
the
money
and
took
the
blanket.
“It
is
beautiful,so
skillfully
woven
(编织),”
I
said
to
my
mother.“But
what
did
she
mean
when
she
said
it
was
not
finished?How
can
it
be
ready
if
it
is
not
finished?”
“I
will
tell
you
later,”
my
mother
said,“but
first
I
will
take
you
to
the
Navajo
village.”
We
went
down
to
the
village.A
group
of
young
men
were
making
sand
pictures.We
walked
through
the
whole
village,watching
the
different
things
the
people
were
doing.
It
was
not
until
that
evening
that
my
mother
finally
explained
the
Navajo
woman’s
words.
“Did
you
notice
anything
about
the
things
the
people
were
making?”
my
mother
asked.
“What
should
I
have
noticed?”
I
looked
at
her
and
asked.
“Each
thing
the
Navajo
make
has
one
small
part
that
is
not
complete.The
designs
(设计)
in
their
sand
pictures
are
often
not
perfectly
done,for
example—the
line
of
a
circle
may
not
quite
close.If
you
look
carefully
at
your
blanket,you
will
probably
find
a
stitch
(一针)
missing.”
I
took
the
blanket
off,but
it
looked
as
perfect
as
any
design
could
be.Then
suddenly,I
noticed
that
sure
enough
a
stitch
was
missing!
“But
why
do
the
Navajo
intentionally
leave
some
tiny
part
unfinished?”
I
asked.
“They
believe
that
when
anything
is
completed
or
finished,it
means
the
end
has
come—it
will
not
be
perfect
until
then.Then
too,with
a
circle,they
believe
that
they
must
leave
a
pathway
for
the
bad
spirits
to
run
away
and
the
good
spirits
to
come
in.So,often,they
do
not
make
the
line
close.”
9.The
blanket
the
author
received________.
A.was
poorly
woven
B.made
her
think
a
lot

her
a
lot
of
money
D.was
finished,but
not
ready
10.Why
was
the
author
shown
around
the
village?
A.To
buy
more
things
made
by
the
Navajo.

make
friends
with
some
of
the
Navajo.
C.To
have
a
deeper
understanding
of
the
Navajo.
D.To
look
for
the
woman
who
sold
her
the
blanket.
11.Which
of
the
following
may
the
Navajo
believe?
A.A
stitch
in
time
is

only
becomes
perfect
when
you

at
making
things.

brave
and
hard?working.

blanket
tells

Ⅱ.阅读理解
A
Everybody
hates
rats.But
in
the
earthquake
capitals
of
the
world—Japan,Los
Angeles,Turkey—rats
will
soon
be
man’s
best
friends.
What
happens
after
an
earthquake?We
send
in
rescue
dogs.Why?Because
they
can
smell
people.Dogs
save
lives.They
help
rescuers
to
find
living
people.But
dogs
are
big
and
they
can’t
get
into
small
spaces.So
now
a
new
research
project
is
using
a
smaller
animal
to
save
lives:the
rat.
How
does
it
work?First,the
rat
is
trained
to
smell
people.When
this
happens,the
rat’s
brain
gives
a
signal
(信号).This
is
sent
to
a
small
radio
on
its
back,and
then
the
rescuers
follow
the
radio
signals.When
the
rat’s
brain
activity
jumps,the
rescuers
know
that
someone
is
alive.The
rat
has
smelled
that
person.
Although
there
are
already
robots
which
can
do
this
job,rats
are
better.Christian
Linster
at
Cornell
University,New
York,says,“Robots’
noses
don’t
work
well
when
there
are
other
smells
around.Rats
are
good
at
that.”Rats
can
also
see
in
the
dark.They
are
cheaper
and
quicker
to
train
than
dogs,and
unlike
robots,they
don’t
need
electricity!
The
“rat
project”
is
not
finished,but
Julie
Ryan
of
International
Rescue
Corps
in
Scotland
says,“It
would
be
fantastic.A
rat
could
get
into
spaces
we
couldn’t
get
to,and
a
rat
would
get
out
if
it
wasn’t
safe.”Perhaps
for
the
first
time
in
history,people
will
be
happy
to
see
a
rat
in
a
building
(but
only
after
an
earthquake,of
course).
1.In
the
world
earthquake
capitals,rats
will

man’s
best
friends

they
can________.
A.
take

place
of

A.the
noise

rat
B.the
rat’s
unusual

D.the
smell

off
by
the

3.Rats

A.they
are
more
fantastic
than
other
animals
B.they
are
less
expensive
to
train
than
dogs
C.they
don’t
need
electricity
D.they
are
small
and
can
get
into
small
places
4.After
reading
the
passage
we

A.at
present
rats

the
place
of
dogs
in
searching
for
people
B.the
“rat
project”
has
been
completed
C.people
are
now
happy
to
see
a
rat
in
a
building
D.now
people
still
use
dogs
and
robots
in
performing
rescues
B
After
an
earthquake
most
survivors
can
be
expected
to
recover
over
time,particularly
with
the
support
of
family
and
friends.Some
families
will
be
able
to
return
to
their
normal
life
quickly,while
others
will
have
to
contend_with
the
destruction
of
their
homes,medical
problems,and
injury
to
family
members.Children
especially
will
need
time
to
recover
from
the
loss
of
a
loved
one
or
a
pet
or
from
the
closing
down
of
their
school.
Children
often
turn
to
adults
for
information,comfort
and
help.Parents
should
try
to
remain
calm,answer
children’s
questions
honestly
and
remain
understanding
when
they
see
changes
in
their
children’s
behavior.
Children
react
differently
to
an
earthquake
depending
on
their
ages,developmental
levels
and
former
experiences.Some
will
respond
by
withdrawing
(不与人交往),while
others
will
have
angry
outbursts
(爆发).Parents
should
remain
sensitive
to
each
child’s
reactions.Parents
should
spend
time
talking
to
their
children,letting
them
know
that
it’s
OK
to
ask
questions
and
to
share
their
worries.Although
it
may
be
hard
to
find
time
to
have
these
talks,parents
can
use
regular
family
mealtimes
or
bedtimes
for
them.They
should
answer
questions
briefly
and
honestly
and
be
sure
to
ask
their
children
for
their
opinions
and
ideas.Issues
may
come
up
more
than
once
and
parents
should
remain
patient
when
you
answer
the
questions
again.For
young
children,parents,after
talking
about
the
earthquake,might
read
a
favorite
story
or
have
a
relaxing
family
activity
to
help
them
calm
down.Parents
should
also
tell
children
they
are
safe
and
spend
extra
time
with
them.They
could
play
games
outside
or
read
together
indoors.Most
importantly,be
sure
to
tell
them
you
love
them.

Ⅱ.阅读理解
The
United
States
has
more
tornadoes
(龙卷风)
than
any
other
country
in
the
world.In
a
normal
year
there
are
800
to
1,000
tornadoes.Most
happen
in
the
middle
part
of
the
country.Tornadoes
form
when
warm
and
cool
air
meet.In
the
Midwest,the
warm
air
from
the
Gulf
of
Mexico
often
meets
the
cold
air
from
Canada.
The
usual
tornado
season
is
March
through
May.Tornadoes
form
most
often
in
the
afternoon
and
early
evening.There
is
often
no
warning
of
a
tornado.People
who
live
in
the
Midwest
know
the
signs
(征兆)
of
tornado
activity.The
sky
becomes
dark,often
a
greenish
color.Dark
clouds
appear
in
the
sky
and
there
is
often
large
hail
(冰雹).Suddenly,there
is
a
loud
sound,like
a
train
or
a
jet
plane.Sometimes,two,three,five,ten
or
more
tornadoes
can
form
over
a
large
area.
This
type
of
tornado
activity
hit
Oklahoma
and
Kansas
in
May
1999.The
day
was
stormy,with
heavy
thunderstorms
in
the
afternoon.As
the
storms
continued,tornadoes
began
to
form.Dozens
of
tornadoes
hit
towns
and
neighborhoods
in
Oklahoma,then
in
Kansas.Some
stayed
on
the
ground
for
several
hours,destroying
everything
they
touched.The
tornadoes
killed
43
people
and
injured
600
others.They
destroyed
thousands
of
homes
and
businesses.In
some
areas,not
one
home
stood.In
other
areas,the
tornadoes
destroyed
every
home
on
the
left
side
of
the
street,but
didn’t
touch
any
homes
on
the
right
side.The
tornadoes
lifted
people
and
cars
into
the
air
and
then
threw
them
back
down
to
earth.So
it
is
important
to
know
where
to
hide
and
how
to
protect
yourself
in
the
face
of
a
tornado.

Every
year
there
are
hundreds
of
earthquakes
in
different
parts
of
the
world.In
September,1923,Tokyo
and
Yokohama
were
both
destroyed
by
an
earthquake
and
the
fires
that
followed
it.They
had
to
be
completely
rebuilt.One
of
the
most
serious
earthquakes
was
in
China’s
Shanxi
Province
in
1556.It
killed
almost
one
million
people.
We
measure
an
earthquake’s
strength
on
the
Richter
Scale.The
Richter
Scale
was
introduced
in
1935
in
Southern
California
in
the
USA.It
measures
earthquakes
on
a
scale
of
one
to
ten.Any
earthquake
measuring
five
or
more
is
usually
serious.
The
Earth’s
crust
(地壳)
is
made
up
of
rock
called
plates.As
these
plates
move,they
sometimes
crash
(撞)
against
each
other,causing
the
crust
to
quake.In
cities
such
as
Tokyo,where
small
quakes
happen
quite
often,many
modern
buildings
are
designed
to
be
flexible
so
when
the
Earth
moves,they
move
with
it.
Earthquakes
can
also
break
up
gas
and
oil
pipes.This
can
cause
fires
to
break
out,which
can
do
as
much
damage
as
the
earthquake
itself.Another
effect
of
earthquakes
is
tsunamis.These
are
huge
waves
created
by
earthquakes
beneath
the
sea.They
can
be
many
metres
high
and
cause
great
damage
to
coastal
towns
and
cities.China,Japan,Russia
and
the
USA
have
the
highest
occurrence
(发生)
of
earthquakes
in
the
world.
1.The
