Step 1 Leading in
Show the following pictures to the class. Talk about them with the students.

Step 2 Warming up
Work in pairs. Ask and answer the questions about Lao She. (Activity 1 on Page 36)
1. Tell them to read the questions.
2. Ask them to work in pairs to ask and answer the questions.
3. Encourage some pairs to share their conversations.
Step3 Fast reading
1. Tell the students to read the headings. Make sure they understand them.
2. Let them read the three paragraphs. Then ask the students to match the headings with the paragraphs on their own.
3. Elicit answers from the whole class.

1. Complete the timeline with information about Lao She. (Activity 3 on Page 37)
(1) Make sure all the students understand the timeline. Pay attention to its order.
(2) Tell the students to read the passage again carefully. Look for the dates in Lao She’s life mentioned in the passage and complete the timeline with the correct events.
(3) Ask the students to check answers in groups.
(4) Elicit answers from the whole class.

1. The play has three acts and shows the lives of common people in China from the end of the nineteenth century to the middle of the twentieth century.该剧有三幕,展现了从19世纪末到20世纪中期中国普通老百姓的生活状况。
(1)show此处用作动词,意为“展示;显示”。show sb. sth. =show sth. to sb. 意为“向某人展示某物”。

if 连词,意为“如果;若”,引导条件状语从句。从句可以放在主句之前,也可以放在主句之后。

Step 7 Writing
1. Complete the table. (Activity 5 on Page 37)
(1) Get the students to answer the questions in the table about Teahouse. Ask them to think about the information without checking the passage.
(2) Ask them to write their answers in the table.

(1) Write question words “Where,When,What,Why” on the blackboard as tips for the sentences.
(2) Ask the students to use the information in Activity 5 to help write sentences.

The story of Teahouse takes place in a teahouse in Beijing. It starts at the end of the 19th century and finishes over 50 years later. The main idea of the play is the changes in Chinese society over this time. We learn about the life of the teahouse owner Wang Lifa and his customers and the changes to their lives in the first half of the 20th century. It is an interesting play because it shows the lives of common people in China. Lao She wrote the play in 1957. He is a very famous Chinese writer and many people think he is one of the greatest writers of the 20th century.
(4) Encourage some students to read their passage.
3. Ask the students to write a passage about his or her favourite play or film.
(1) Ask them to write the passage in class if there is enough time. Or ask them to write it as homework after school.
(2) Ask some students to read their passages to class.
A possible answer:
My favourite film is Star Wars. It takes place in the future when people travel into space from earth to other planets. The main idea of the film is a war between good and bad people, so in many ways it is quite a traditional story. Some dangerous things happen, but in the end the good people win. There are a lot of famous actors in the film and the music is also very exciting. George Lucas wrote Star Wars in 1977, but now millions of people still like to watch it.
