I consider myself something of an expert on apologies. A quick temper has 36 me with plenty of opportunities to make them. In one of my earliest 37 , my mother is telling me , “Don’t watch the 38 when you say, ‘I’m sorry’. Hold your head up and look at the person in the 39 , so he’ll know you 40 it.”
My mother thus made the key point of a(n) 41 apology: it must be direct. You must never 42 to be doing something else. You do not 43 a pile of letters while apologizing to a person 44 in position after blaming him or her for a mistake that turned out to be your 45 . You do not apologize to a hostess, whose guest of honor you treat 46 , by sending flowers the next day without mentioning your bad 47 .
One of the important things we should do for an 48 apology is a readiness to 49 the responsibility for our careless mistakes .We are used to making excuses ,which leaves no 50 for the other person to 51 us .Since most people are open-hearted ,the no-excuse apology leaves both parties feeling 52 about themselves .That ,after all ,is the 53 of every apology .It 54 little whether the apologizer is wholly or only partly a fault :answering for one’s 55 encourages others to take their share of the blame.
36.A.provided B.mixed C.compared D.treated
37.A.dreams B.courses C.memories D.ideas
38.A.side B.ground C.wall D.bottom

43.A.hold on B.put away C.look through D.pick up
44.A.poorer B.weaker C.worse D.lower
45.A.fault B.reason C.result D.duty
46.A.cruelly B.freely C.roughly D.foolishly

第三部分:阅读理解(共15小题;每小题2分,满分30分)
A
If you do not use your arms or your legs for some time, they become weak; when you start using them again, they slowly become strong again. Everybody knows that. Yet many people do not seem to know that memory works in the same way.
When someone says that he has a good memory, he really means that he keeps his memory in practice by using it. When someone else says that his memory is poor, he really means that he does not give it enough chance to become strong.
If a friend says that his arms and legs are weak, we know that it is his fault. But if he tells us that he has a poor memory, many of us think that his parents are to blame(责备), and few of us know that it is just his own fault.
Have you ever found that some people can't read or write but they have better memories This is because they cannot read or write and they have to remember things; they cannot write them down in a little notebook. They have to remember days, names, songs and stories; so their memory is the whole time being exercised.
So if you want to have a good memory, learn from the people: practise remembering.

How Room Designs Affect Our Work and Feelings
Architects have long had the feeling that the places we live in can affect our thoughts, feelings and behaviors, But now scientists are giving this feelings an empirical(经验的, 实证的)basis. They are discovering how to design spaces that promote creativity, keep people focused, and lead to relaxation.
Researches show that aspects of the physical environment can influence creativity. In 2007, Joan Meyers-Levy at the University of Minnesota, reported that the height of a room’s ceiling affects how people to think. Her research indicates that the higher ceilings encourage people to think more freely, which may lead them to make more abstract connections. Low ceilings, on the other hand, may inspire a more detailed outlook.
In addition to ceiling height, the view afforded by a building may influence an occupant’s ability to concentrate. Nancy Wells and her colleagues at Cornell University found in their study that kids who experienced the greatest increase in greenness as a result of a family move made the most gains on a standard test of attention.
Using nature to improve focus of attention ought to pay off academically, and it seems to, according to a study led by C. Kenneth Tanner, head of the School Design &Planning Laboratory at University of Georgia. Tanner and his team found that students in classrooms with unblocked views of at least 50 feet outside the window had higher scores on tests of vocabulary, language arts and maths than did students whose classrooms primarily overlooked roads and parking lots.
Recent study on room lighting design suggests that dim(暗淡的)light helps people to loosen up. If that is true generally, keeping the light low during dinner or at parties could increase relaxation. Researchers of Harvard Medical School also discovered that furniture with rounded edges could help visitors relax.
So far scientists have focused mainly on public buildings. “We have a very limited number of studies, so we’re almost looking at the problem through a straw(吸管), ”architect David Allison says. “How do you take answers to very specific questions and make broad, generalized use of them That’s what we're all struggling with. ”
64. What does Joan Meyers-Levy focus on in her research
A. Light B. Ceilings C. Windows D. Furniture.
65. The passage tells us that____.
A. the shape of furniture may affect people, s feelings
B. lower ceilings may help improve students’ creativity
C. children in a dim classroom may improve their grades
D. Students in rooms with unblocked views may feel relaxed
66. The underlined sentence in the last paragraph probably means that _______.
A. the problem is not approached step by step
B. the researches so far have faults in themselves
C. the problem is too difficult for researchers to detect
D. research in this area is not enough to make generalized patterns
67. Which of the following shows the organization of the passage
CP: Central Point P: point Sp: Sub—point(次要点)C: Conclusion
D
Advice to “sleep on it” could be well founded, scientists say. After a good night’s sleep a problem that couldn’t be solved the night before can often appear more manageable, although the evidence until now has been anecdotal (个人体验的).But researchers at the University of Luebek in Germany have designed an experiment that shows a good night’s sleep can improve insight (顿悟) and problem-solving.
“If you have some newly-got memories in your brain, sleep acts on these memories and restructures them , so that after sleep the insight into problem which you could not solve before increases,” said Dr Jan Born , a neuroscientist (神经科学家), at the university. To test the theory, they taught volunteers two simple rules to help them turn a string of numbers into a new order. There was also a third, hidden rule, which could help them increase their speed in solving the problem. The researchers divided the volunteers into two groups: half were allowed to sleep after the training while the rest were forced to stay awake.Dr Jan Born and his team noticed that the group that had slept after the training were twice as likely to figure out the third rule as the other group.“Sleep helped,” Born said in a telephone interview.“The important thing is that you have to have a memory representation in your brain of the problem you want to solve and then you sleep, so it can act on the problem.” But Born admitted that he and his team don’t know how restructuring of memories occurs or what governs it.Pierre Maquet and Perrine Ruby of the University of Liege in Belgium said the experimental evidence supports the anecdotal suggestions that sleep can help develop creative thinking.Although the role of sleep in human creativity will still be a mystery, the research gives people good reason to fully respect their periods of sleep, they added.
68. The underlined phrase “sleep on it” in Paragraph 1 probably means .
A. to delay deciding something until the next day
B. to get as much sleep as possible
C. to go on sleeping without being disturbed
D. to sleep till after the time you usually get up in the morning
69. Jan Born and his team carried out the experiment through _____.
A. comparison B. interview C. survey D. imagination
70. What would be the best title for the passage
A. How Sleep Works B. Sleep Helps Solve Problems
C. No Evidence, But Well Founded D. Born’s Discovery On Sleep

Canada’s wealth comes from the exploitation of its rich natural resources and from the work of its citizens. Canadians are employed in a variety of jobs. All of these jobs can be grouped into one of three categories: extractive industries, manufacturing industries and service industries.
Industries that take raw materials from the natural environment are called extractive or primary industries. Canada has a wealth of natural resources. The extractive industries that have been developed to exploit these natural resources make an important contribution to the wealth of our economy. Without these extractive industries, and the money they bring from other countries, Canada’s economy could not exist in its present form. Yet only a small percentage of Canada’s labour force works in extractive industries. Extractive industries rely on labour-saving machines instead of human labour.
Manufacturing industries process the products of extractive industries into finished products Manufacturing industries transform raw materials into many different forms to be used by consumers or by other companies. This processing may be done in one or more stages. For example, iron ore is transformed into steel in factories. This is called primary manufacturing. The steel is then sent to companies for further processing into cars, mining equipment, machines, nails, and other products-such as bicycle frames. This is called secondary manufacturing.
Manufacturing industries are located in many towns and cities across panies try to build their factories in densely populated areas because they want to near the people who buy their products. If they locate near their customers, then they save money on shipping costs. Manufacturing industries provide more jobs to Canadians than do extractive industries. Yet the number of people employed in manufacturing is still small in comparison to the third category, services. As with extractive industries, manufacturing process use many machines that require relatively few workers.
Service industries provide services needed by the extractive and manufacturing industries, and by society in general. Without these services, society could not operate. The majority of Canadian workers do not produce “goods” in their jobs. Instead, they provide “services” for others. The range of services is very great and includes such things as retailing, office work, education, health care, communications, government, transportation, and personal services.
Service industries in one form or another are spread over the entire country. In every community there are stores, banks, schools, police forces, and dozens of other services. The majority of service industries are found in town and cities because services are provided for people and there are many more people in urban areas, Canada’s economy depends upon the creation of jobs in all three types of industry.

A possible version:
Recently our class has held a heated discussion about whether it’s good for teenagers to surf the Internet through mobile phones. Opinions are divided on this matter.
About 60% of the students support it. They think by surfing the Internet through mobile phones, they can know about the latest information anytime and anywhere they like, which will broaden their views. Moreover, it’s convenient for them to keep in touch with their parents and friends. At the same time, it provides many functions, thus making them relaxed.
However, about 40% of the students hold the opposite opinion, arguing that it’s a waste of time and money to play games and chat online through mobile phones. Worse still, there is a lot of harmful information online, which surely has a bad influence on teenagers. Being addicted to online games does great harm to their life as well as their studies.
In my opinion, teenagers can surf the Internet through mobile phones on condition that they can make good use of it. Besides, our government should take measures to ensure a safer online environment for teenagers.
