On the day the tornado hit, there was no sign severe weather was on its way—the sky was blue and the sun had been out. My husband Jimmy and I were watching TV upstairs.
No sooner had we got the coverage of the tornado than it was on top of us. It was the loudest thing I have ever heard. The bones of the house shook, and the power went out. We had three flights of steps to get through to get to the relative safety of the first floor.
As we struggled to reach the last flight of steps, our front door blew out. Pieces of glass that looked like crushed ice flew everywhere. Suddenly, a three-foot-long tree branch flew over our heads, missing us by inches. Had we been one step up, it would have impaled us.
By the time I reached the closet, Jimmy pushed me down to the closet floor, but he couldn抰 get inside himself because of the wind. I grasped Jimmy抯 arm and tried to bring Jimmy with it. My knees and head were full of glass, but in that moment, I felt no pain. If I had let go, Jimmy would have flown right out the back of the house and into the bay.
揌old on! Hold on! he yelled. But there was nothing in this closet to hold on to.
All of a sudden, Jimmy lifted off his feet like people in tornadoes do in the movies. I thought he was gone. And then everything stopped. He landed on his feet. In those first quiet moments, I couldn抰 believe it was over. Jimmy said he抎 go outside to check. 揘o, I said. 揇on抰 leave me. Don抰 leave me.

If you don抰 use it, you lose it. At least, that抯 how the old saying goes. It refers to the idea that something which does not get used regularly quickly falls into a state of decline. Muscles, for example, will waste away without use. In order to resist this, people take regular exercise to keep their skills sharp.
Well, what about the brain? As we age, our brains can naturally begin to decline. In some cases, this can lead to certain mental conditions such as dementia (痴呆), which I’m sure you will agree, no one wants. However, all is not lost because these days it’s relatively easy to train your brain. Smart phones and apps have put programmes into our hands that can test, maintain and even improve our memories, mathematical skills and a lot of other mental abilities. With a little practice every day, we can keep our brains nice and sharp, right?
Well, no, actually. According to a report from the Global Council on Brain Health, even though many people thought it was important to play online games, such as puzzles and mind games, which are designed to improve brain health, the evidence of the benefits was 搘eak to non-existent.
There are other ways to promote the old grey matter. It recommends seeking out new activities that challenge the way you think and are socially engaging, while leading to a healthy lifestyle. Among their suggestions are practising tai chi, taking photography classes, learning new technologies, gardening, art projects or volunteering.
There抯 more good news, too. James Goodwin, chief scientist at Age UK has said that brain decline is not inevitable (不可避免的). As long as the activities are “new to you and require your concentrated attention”, they can provide benefits for brain health. So, hurry up, get out there and try something new. Maybe it’s time to try that hobby you’ve always wanted to do. And as for me? I抦 off to learn the piano.
8.From which is the text probably taken?
A.A biology textbook. B.A research paper.
C.A travel brochure. D.A healthy magazine.
9.According to the passage, what can the brain training apps help you?
A.It will improve our brain health. B.It can make us smarter.
C.It does little to sharp our brain. D.It can prevent us from aging.
10.How to maintain brain health according to the author?
A.Using smart phone regularly. B.Trying something new.
C.Playing games online. D.Doing what you are good at.
11.What does the passage mainly tell us?
A.How to spend time meaningfully at an old age.
B.How to keep brain sharp.
C.Disadvantages of using smart phones.
D.Advantages of trying something new.

Dear students,
I feel proud knowing your interest in Chinese set phrases. Now let me tell a story about "Look at the sky from the bottom of a well"
There is a frog. He lives in a well and he never goes out of the well. He thinks the sky is as big as the mouth of the well.
The set phrase means sitting in the well to watch the sky, which is often used to describe and satirize the people with limited vision or superficial knowledge.
From this set phrase, we can learn a lot. In our life, we can not think that the world is only as big as the city we live, and we should go out to see the vaster world. As the saying goes, it is better to travel ten thousand miles than to read ten thousand books. So we have to go out to see the outside world. We can not learn from the small frog at the bottom of the well, only to see the sky as big as the well. We should go to other countries to learn more knowledge and skills.
