In the just-released燭he Playbook: 52 Rules to Aim, Shoot, and Score in This Game Called Life,燗lexander aims to inspire readers to dream big and reach for their goals.
Time For Kids:
What can you tell us about燭he Playbook?
Kwame Alexander:
I wanted to write a book about how important it is to persevere (坚持) and accept the challenges that come, because they only make you stronger. And I wanted to do it in a really cool and fun way, using sports as a metaphor (隐喻), so students would be interested in reading a book that is telling them how to make their lives better.
TFK:
Where did you get the idea for the book?
Alexander:
In燭he Crossover, the father of the main characters, Josh and Jordan, gives them these rules for life, called Basketball Rules. Well, I was having breakfast with a friend of mine in New York City. He said, 揔wame, I love those Basketball Rules you have in燭he Crossover. You should think about writing a whole book on those. That抯 where it all began.
TFK:
Is it hard to mix sports and poetry (诗歌)?
Alexander:
I love sports, and I’ve been writing poetry since I was a kid. So those two things are as natural to me as breathing, laughing and walking.
TFK:?
You’ve said teachers need to make learning poetry fun. Did you have a teacher like this as a kid?
Alexander:
My mom. She read poetry to my sisters and me when I was a kid, and she would make the words jump off the page!
TFK:牋
What advice would you give to young writers?

揥ait. You抳e always wanted to do that, too?! Why don抰 we do it this summer?!
That was how it started. My sister and I were talking on the phone when the topic of forest firefighting arose.
Fighting wildfires as a summer job may sound strange, but it抯 not uncommon in the western United States. There are at least 50,000 wildfires annually in the U.S., a high number of which happen in the western states. And of course, most happen during the hot months of the year, between May and September. So the need for people willing to spend summers fighting these fires is real!
Federal agencies, such as the U.S. Forest Service and the Bureau of Land Management, as well as private contractors (承包商), employ thousands of seasonal firefighters each year. Through a friend, my sister and I were introduced to one of these private contractors. He agreed to employ us for his crew if we took a training course and passed the pack test.
Our training consisted of a two-day course on the basics of wildfire management. We learned what causes wildfires, the tools and techniques for fighting them and safety guidelines.
The pack test requires a person to walk three miles in under 45 minutes while carrying a 45-pound pack. Since most beginners work on Line, Engine or Hotshot Crews all extremely physical everyone needs to pass this test. And we did!
燱e learned that fighting forest fires includes more than simply spraying (喷出) water on flames. The goal is to?contain?the fire, not put it out entirely. This is done mainly with tools used to remove plants and roots from the ground, creating a line of dirt around the fire. After this, crews watch the line to ensure the fire doesn抰 burn more brightly. We also did 搈op-up tasks going into the burned areas and burying hot spots, such as burning tree trunks. Though firefighting is difficult and dangerous, it抯 definitely rewarding.
25. What does Paragraph 3 mainly explain?
A. Why there抯 a great need for forest firefighters.
B. Who is the right person for the firefighting job.
C. When is the best time to take the firefighting job.
D. Why so many wildfires happen in the U.S. every year.

A. received formal training for beginners
B. got permission from the U.S. Forest Service
C. had never heard any information about this job
D. had a heated discussion about the safety of the job
27. Which of the following can best describe the pack test?
A. Safety-related. B. Terribly dangerous.
C. Record-breaking. D. Physically exhausting.
28. What does the underlined word 揷ontain in the last paragraph probably mean?
A. Fight.
B. Build.
C. Detect.
D. Control.

A new report from the International Bar Association (IBA) suggests machines will most likely replace humans in a growing number of occupations. One of the authors of the report, Gerlind Wisskirchen, believes that governments need to introduce human quotas (配额) in some sectors in order to protect jobs.
The report suggests that the jobs at risk are common ones, such as accountants and lawyers. Financial services are more at risk than legal roles though, as algorithms (计算程序) are easier for a computer to solve when compared to keeping client relationships and making new laws. Simple physical work is also in the firing line, the authors mention.
As the world population heads towards 7 to 10 billion, futurist Morris Miselowski says, 揑抦 not sure that this nine-to-five, Monday to Friday work as we understand it, will continue for many of us for the next couple of decades. He forecasts that the biggest changes will be a shift (转变) away from the traditional work schedule.
“Artificial intelligence (AI) ... and all sorts of new technologies are just about to happen; all of that’s going to change where, how and when we do work.”
Ms Wisskirchen was surprised by how far-reaching the effects of automation (自动化) are.
“Even though automation began 30 years ago in the blue-collar sector, the new development of artificial intelligence and robotics affects not just the blue-collar sector, but the white-collar sector,” said Ms Wisskirchen.
Toby Walsh, professor of Artificial Intelligence at UNSW, said there was a silver lining when it came to technology and the future of jobs.
揑t抯 always good to remember that although technology will take jobs away as they raise in this report, there will also be new jobs created by technology, he said. 揑n fact if we look at the history of technology since the Industrial Revolution, more jobs have been created than destroyed.敔
29. What message does the new report from the IBA send?
A. More jobs will be offered to humans.
B. Someday humans won抰 need to work.
C. More jobs will be created because of AI.
D. Someday robots will take over your job.
30. According to Morris Miselowski, what will happen in the future?
A. AI will make humans life easier.
B. Physical work will disappear from sight.
C. The traditional work hours will be changed.
D. Automation will have little effect on lawyers.
31. Who is optimistic about the future of jobs?
A. The author.
B. Toby Walsh.
C. Morris Miselowski.
D. Gerlind Wisskirchen.

What does Shakespeare offer English language learners apart from the theatrical and literary experience awaiting anyone who hears or reads his poems and sees or reads his plays? A great deal. Shakespeare is in many ways the perfect advanced teacher he shows us how to use the resources (资源) of a language as effectively (有效地) as possible.
He has of course been an important general influence on the development of English, because many of his words and sentences have become part of everyday modern use.?You are quoting Shakespeare when you say that truth will out, the game is up, and you haven’t slept a wink (haven’t slept at all).?If you look in the unabridged (未删节的) Oxford English Dictionary (OED), you’ll find over 2,000 words which have their first recorded use in Shakespeare, such as assassination, outswear, and weather-bitten.
Far more important, though, is the way his linguistic strategies (语言学策略) provide guidelines for modern users. He added un- to make new words, such as unbuild and unmusical; today we do the same thing with uncool and unfunny. He added -less to make airless and languageless; today we say such things as computerless and iPadless. He also turned nouns into verbs: his characters nose things as well as smell them; they ear things as well as hear them; they are windowed (displayed in a window) and mudded (covered by mud). Today, the Internet provides many examples of people texting, googling, and tweeting, and doing many things that were originally nouns. This is well within the spirit of Shakespeare.
Shakespeare teaches learners how to be daring in their use of English. It is a sign of real fluency when learners can take a rule and change it to suit their purposes. Perhaps we should view Shakespeare the greatest writer in the English language in a new way: the best English teacher.牋
32. Why does the author regard Shakespeare as a great teacher?
A. He had very advanced teaching skills.
B. He offered much learning resources.
C. He made more people love plays.
D. He made the best use of English.
33. What can we infer about the expressions in the underlined part?
A. They are quite confusing.
B. They are frequently used.
C. They are collected in the OED.
D. They are recorded by Shakespeare.
34. What can we learn about the method of creating words like 搇anguageless?
A. It proved to be a wrong way to use words.
B. It was Shakespeare抯 way to invent words.
C. Modern people seldom make words in this way.
D. Shakespeare based the way on traditional strategies.
35. What does the text mainly discuss?
A. Why Shakespeare was daring in his use of English.
B. How Shakespeare’s plays influence teaching.
C. How well Shakespeare could use English.
D. Why Shakespeare is so influential.?

Last term I joined in a geography research group. Our topic was environment pollution and protection. We took many pictures show the present pollution problems of our city. To our surprise, there are still a lot of people doing silly thing to our surroundings. Some people throw rubbish anywhere they like, but some cars give off harmful gases. What surprise us most is that waste water is sending into rivers by some factories. Worse still, people sometimes have to make their way through smog (雾霾) as result of the pollution. Through our research, we have come to realize that everybody must pay attention for our environment and taking some measures to protect it.

选做题
???????阅读下列短文,从每题所给的四个选项(A、B、C和D)中,选出最佳选项。
A
I search for ghost signs on city streets, in town squares, and along country roads. Some are weather-beaten billboards (广告牌); others are discolored pictures painted years ago on the sides of old buildings. The remaining words?—?Fruiteree ... Apothecary ... Gramophones ... Pan-Handle Coffee?—?are often not clear enough to read, but they are small parts of yesterday’s consumer (消费者) culture that should strike me as silly or sad. After all, there they are: advertising products and businesses that no longer exist. Yet, they themselves survive with their simple words and pale colors. The contrast (对照) draws me in every time.
I collect ghost signs. Not the signs themselves, but photos of them. I started my collection one cold October evening, driving home from school. I had made the same drive many times before, but I had never noticed the sign.
Then there it was, an ad for?“Joe’s Café”, placed on the top of a metal pole, which was disappearing under the protection of vines (蔓生植物). Maybe it was the way the setting sun lighted up the yellowing plastic. Maybe it was the small hole, evidence of someone抯 destructive act or of a heavy storm. Something about the sign touched me. I pulled over. I got out of the car, took a picture with my phone, and sent it to some friends. I wanted to return with my camera to better catch the beauty of my discovery. Since that dusky evening, I have been happily attracted by ghost signs.
Once in a while, I take a friend with me on my searches. People who know of my collection will direct me to where they think they have seen a ghost sign. Favorite finds include an ad for sliced bread, one for a “modern” motel, and yet another for fountain pen repair services. As fun as it is to have company, my best hunts have been solo (独自的) trips. I appreciate the beauty of ghost signs more when I, like the signs, am alone.

For many years doctors have warned us about the dangers of stress (压力) and have given us advice about how to cut down our stress levels. Everyone agrees that long-term stress, for example having to look after someone who has a chronic (慢性的) illness, or stressful situations where there is nothing we can do, for example being stuck in a traffic jam, should be avoided whenever possible. However, some medical experts now believe that certain kinds of stress may actually be good for us.
Dr Marios Kyriazis, an anti-ageing expert, points out that what he calls 揼ood stress is beneficial to our health and may, in fact, help us stay young and attractive and even live longer. Dr Kyriazis says that good stress can strengthen our natural defences which protect us from illnesses common among older people, such as Alzheimer抯 and heart problems.
According to Dr Kyriazis, running for a bus or having to work to meet a deadline are examples of 揼ood stress, that is situations with short-term or low stress. The stress usually makes us react quickly, and gives us a sense of achievement we did it! However, in both situations, the stress damages the cells (细胞) in our body or brain and they start to break down. But then the cells’ own repair mechanism?“switches on”?and it produces proteins which repair the damaged cells and remove harmful chemicals that can gradually cause disease. In fact, the body’s response is greater than is needed to repair the damage, so?it?actually makes the cells stronger than they were before.
“As the body gets older, this self-repair mechanism of the cells starts to slow down,” says Dr Kyriazis. “The best way to keep the process working efficiently is to ‘exercise’ it, in the same way you would exercise your muscles to keep them strong. This means having a certain amount of stress in our lives.” Other stressful activities that Kyriazis suggests as being good stress include redecorating a room in your house over the weekend, packing your suitcase in a hurry to reach the airport on time, or shopping for a dinner party during your lunch break.
So next time your boss tells you that she wants to see the report finished and on her desk in 45 minutes, don’t worry; just think of it as “good stress” which will benefit your long-term health!
6. What is Dr Kyriazis’ opinion probably based on?
A. The benefits of doing physical exercise.
B. The relationship between stress and health.
C. How to get a sense of achievement.
D. How to cut down our stress levels.
7. What does the underlined word “it” in Paragraph 3 refer to?
A. The daily stress.
B. Long-term stress.
C. The increasing stress.
D. Short-term or low stress.
8. According to Dr Kyriazis, which of the following may be “good stress”?
A. Being stuck in a traffic jam.
B. Being late for work for several days.
C. Packing for a trip at the last minute.
D. Looking after a patient with heart trouble.
9. What would be the best title for the text?
A. Stress beats success
B. Stress attracts illness
C. Get stressed, stay young
D. Less stress, better health

???????Good morning, everyone. I’d like to share my ideas about books in the future with you.
?????? I think books in the future will be quite different from what they are now. First of all, they will look like the Pads of today, but their size will be changeable. Secondly, the color of the books will be adjusted according to how our surroundings change, which will be good for our eyes. What’s more, they will be more interactive. For example, if you come across a question when reading, you can get an answer by “talking” with the book directly. All in all, I think books in the future will be more useful and fascinating.
?????? That’s all. Thank you!?
