Passage
1
Our
children
feel
stressed
out
by
an
educational
system
that
actually
uses
stress
as
an
educational
technique.It's
a
constant
pressure
of
homework
deadlines,essays
and
exams.And
our
children
are
told
at
a
young
age
that
failing
a
test
means
that
they
are
failures
in
life.They'll
end
up
nowhere
if
they
don't
pass
this
or
that
exam.Our
educational
system
is
based
on
a
very
Western
idea
that
life
is
a
struggle
and
you'd
better
measure
up.It's
survival
of
the
fittest.While
there
is
some
truth
to
this,not
as
much
as
people
think.
Our
ancestors
didn't
develop
a
constant
stress
environment.
Back
then,stress
came
quickly
and
was
over
quickly,it
wasn't
like
the
stress
of
modern
education.Stress
was
originally
just
a
short?term
biological
response
to
danger;however,the
constant
stress
of
modern
education
rarely
stops.It's
long
term,at
least
ten
years
and
usually
more.
Recent
research
has
shown
that
the
neurological(神经系统的)response
to
stress
is
the
same
response
that
is
found
in
depression.
So,what's
the
solution?
A
number
have
been
proposed,including
but
not
limited
to
the
following.
________.Exercise
consumes
energy
that
would
otherwise
build
up
in
the
stress
response
and
could
cause
physical
and
mental
problems.
Teach
relaxation
exercises.Allowing
the
mind
and
body
to
relax
cuts
off
the
stress
response
and
reduces
the
neurological
fatigue,enabling
the
individual
to
recover
at
least
somewhat.
Pay
attention
to
thinking.Training
the
stressed
student
to
pay
attention
to
his
or
her
own
mind
to
a
point
where
he
or
she
is
sufficiently
aware
to
shut
off
the
stress
response
when
necessary.
Of
course,there's
a
logical
answer
to
the
problem.Just
rearrange
our
teaching
methods
to
encourage,rather
than
prevent,the
natural
curiosity
and
joy
in
learning
that
we
are
all
born
with.This
would
remove
the
stress
and
probably
cut
learning
time
in
half.
1.What
is
the
main
idea
of
the
passage?
A.Dealing
with
stress
in
modern
education.
B.Helping
children
live
a
happy
life.
C.Getting
rid
of
the
modern
education.
D.Taking
measures
to
learn
at
school.

Managers
and
office
busybodies
might
be
keen
on
a
clean
desk-but
it
seems
that
in
terms
of
productivity,they
could
have
it
all
wrong.A
messy
desk
can
actually
lead
people
towards
clearer
thinking,say
researchers
from
Germany.
The
researchers
found
in
a
series
of
linked
studies—using
a
messy
desk
and
a
messy
shop
front-that
people
actually
thought
more
clearly
when
all
around
was
chaos,as
they
sought
to
simplify
the
tasks
at
hand.That
is,visual
and
mental
clutter(杂乱)
forces
human
beings
to
focus
and
think
more
clearly.For
instance,famous
thinkers
and
writers
such
as
Albert
Einstein
and
Roald
Dahl
have
been
notorious
for
their
untidy
desks.
“Messy
desks
may
not
be
as
detrimental
as
they
appear
to
be,as
the
problem?solving
approaches
they
seem
to
cause
can
boost
work
efficiency
or
enhance
employees'
creativity
in
problem
solving,”
say
the
authors.
Oddly,the
effect
seems
to
work
most
on
conservatives—political
liberals
are
less
liable
to
be
worried
about
mess
in
the
first
place,say
the
researchers.
“Business
and
government
managers
often
promote
‘clean
desk’policies
to
avoid
disorganized
offices
and
messy
desks,for
the
purpose
of
boosting
work
efficiency
and
productivity,”
writes
a
researcher,Jia
Liu
of
the
University
of
Groningen.“This
practice
is
based
on
the
conventional
wisdom
that
a
disorganized
and
messy
environment
can
clutter
one's
mind
and
complicate
one's
judgments.”
“However,not
all
evidence
supports
this
conventional
link
between
a
messy
environment
and
a
messy
mind.”
The
scientists
tested
people's
response
in
various
“messy”
environments,including
a
messy
shop
front,a
disorganized
desk,and
even
a
work
environment
where
a
language
task
“reminded”
people
of
messiness.
The
authors
found
in
the
series
of
six
studies
that
people
tended
towards
simplicity
in
their
thinking.
“They
categorized
products
in
a
simpler
manner,were
willing
to
pay
more
for
a
T?shirt
that
depicts
a
simple?looking
picture,and
sought
less
variety
in
their
choices,”
said
the
researchers.
1.According
to
the
text,a
proper

B.simplify
the
tasks
at
hand
C.follow
famous
people

MIT
researchers
and
their
colleagues
are
working
to
find
out
whether
energy
from
trees
can
power
a
network
of
sensors
(传感器)
to
prevent
spreading
forest
fires.
What
they
learn
could
also
raise
the
possibility
of
using
trees
as
silent
guards
along
the
nation's
borders
to
discover
potential
threats
such
as
smuggled
(走私的)
radioactive
materials.
The
US
Forest
Service
currently
predicts
and
tracks
fires
with
a
variety
of
tools,including
remote
automated
weather
stations.But
these
stations
are
expensive
and
sparsely
(稀疏地)
distributed.Additional
sensors
could
save
trees
by
providing
better
local
climate
data
to
be
used
in
fire
prediction
models
and
earlier
warnings.However,recharging
or
replacing
batteries
by
hand
at
very
hard?to?reach
locations
makes
it
impractical
and
costly.
The
new
sensor
system
seeks
to
avoid
this
problem
by
developing
trees
into
a
self?sustaining
power
supply.Each
sensor
is
equipped
with
a
battery
that
can
be
slowly
recharged
using
electricity
produced
by
the
tree.“A
single
tree
doesn't
generate
a
lot
of
power,but
over
time
the
trickle
(细流)
charge
adds
up,just
like
‘________’”,said
Shuguang
Zhang,one
of
the
researchers
on
the
project
and
the
associate
director
of
the
MIT's
Centre
for
Biomedical
Engineering
(CBE).
The
system
produces
enough
electricity
to
allow
the
temperature
and
humidity
sensors
to
wirelessly
send
out
signals
four
times
a
day,or
immediately
if
there's
a
fire.Each
signal
spreads
from
one
sensor
to
another,until
it
reaches
an
existing
weather
station
that
sends
the
data
by
satellite
to
a
forestry
command
centre
in
Boise,Idaho.
Scientists
have
long
known
that
trees
can
produce
extremely
small
amounts
of
electricity.But
no
one
knew
exactly
how
the
energy
was
produced
or
how
to
take
advantage
of
the
power.
1.What
are
the
disadvantages
of
the
remote
automated
weather
stations?
a.They
cost
too
much.
b.They
are
of
poor
quality.
c.They
are
not
enough.
d.They
can't
reach
remote
places.
A.a,b
B.b,d
C.a,c
D.b,c

to
Gabe

by
the
city's

that
it
darkened
the

admitted
town

Astronomers—scientists

There
was
once
a
tiny
country
that
was
suffering
from
a
long
drought.It
had
gone
so
long
without
rain
that
the
people
there
were
starting
to
go
hungry
because
of
the
bad
harvests.
It
just
so
happened
that
a
group
of
musicians
were
traveling
the
country,trying
to
make
a
living
from
their
concerts.But
with
so
many
problems
in
the
land,no
one
felt
like
listening
to
music.“But
music
can
help
overcome
any
problems,”
said
the
musicians,without
anyone
paying
them
the
slightest
attention.
So
the
musicians
tried
to
find
out
the
reason
it
wouldn't
rain.It
was
very
strange,because
the
sky
was
overcast,but
no
one
could
provide
an
answer.
“It's
been
cloudy
like
this
for
many
months,but
not
a
single
drop
of
rain
has
fallen,”
people
told
them.
“Don't
worry,we'll
bring
rain
to
the
country,”
the
musicians
responded,and
they
began
rehearsing
for
a
concert
at
the
summit
of
the
highest
mountain.
Everyone
who
heard
the
music
was
seized
by
curiosity
and
went
up
the
mountain.And
the
conductor
of
this
strange
orchestra
gave
the
order,and
the
musicians
began
to
play.
From
their
instruments
came
small,playful
musical
notes
that
rose
and
rose
into
the
clouds.The
music
was
so
joyous,happy
and
fun,and
the
notes
started
playing
with
the
clouds'
soft,fluffy
bellies,running
here
and
there,up
and
down,and
the
whole
sky
turned
into
one
big
game
of
tickle
torture.Before
long,the
giant
clouds
were
thundering
with
laughter.
The
musicians
continued
playing
joyfully
and
a
few
minutes
later
the
clouds,crying
with
laughter,soaked
the
little
country
below
with
their
precious
tears,bringing
happiness
to
all.
And
in
memory
of
that
musical
rain,everyone
in
the
country
learned
how
to
play
an
instrument
and,taking
turns,would
go
up
the
mountain
every
day
to
bring
joy
to
the
clouds
with
their
beautiful
songs.
1.Why
did

Imagine

30,000
years,and
then
taking
the
seed
out
and
planting
it.Do
you
think
a
flower
would
grow?
Amazingly,scientists
have
just
managed
to
do
something
very
similar.They
found
the
fruit
of
an
ancient
plant
that
had
been
frozen
underground
in
Siberia—a
region
covering
central
and
eastern
Russia—for
about
31,800
years.Using
pieces
of
the
fruit,the
scientists
grew
plants
in
a
lab.The
new
blooms
have
delicate
white
petals.They
are
also
the
oldest
flowering
plants
that
researchers
have
ever
revived
from
a
deep
freeze.
“This

like
regenerating
a
dinosaur
from
tissues
of
an
ancient
egg,”
said
Jane
Shen?Miller,a
biologist
of
University
of
California,Los
Angeles.
The
plant
has
a
long
history.Back
when
mammoths
and
woolly
rhinoceroses
walked
on
the
land,an
Arctic
ground
squirrel
buried
seeds
and
fruits
in
an
underground
chamber
near
the
Kolyma
River
in
northeastern
Siberia.The
ground
became
permafrost,a
layer
of
soil
that
stays
frozen
for
a
long
time.
Recently,Russian
scientists
dug
out
the
old
squirrel
hole
and
found
the
plant
remains
38
meters
below
the
surface.Back
at
the
lab,the
team
fed
nutrients
to
tissue
from
three
of
the
fruits
to
grow
shoots.Then
the
scientists
transferred
the
shoots
to
pots
filled
with
soil.The
plants
produced
seeds
that
could
be
used
to
grow
even
more
of
them.
It's
important
for
scientists
to
know
that
plant
tissues
can
still
be
revived
after
being
frozen
for
a
long
time.That's
because
many
researchers
are
trying
to
preserve
the
seeds
of
modern
plants
by
freezing
them
and
then
storing
them
in
giant
lockers
at
various
spots
around
the
globe.One
such
endeavor,an
underground
facility
in
Norway,is
called
the
Svalbard
Global
Seed
Vault.It
stores
hundreds
of
thousands
of
frozen
seeds.If
a
plant
ever
goes
extinct,scientists
could
bring
it
back
by
taking
its
seeds
from
the
Svalbard
or
other
storage
lockers.
“No
one
knows
how
long
they
are
able
to
live
for,but
freezing
is
basically
the
format
for
many
plant
conservation
attempts
nowadays,”
Jane
Shen?Miller
said.It's
a
good
thing
that
at
least
some
plants
are
tough
enough
to
survive
in
the
experience.
1.How
were
seeds
and

originally
in
the
underground
chamber?
A.They
were
placed
there
by
an
animal.
B.They
were
trapped
there
during
the

C.They
were

As
computers
become
more
popular
in
China,
Chinese
people
are
increasingly
relying
on
computer
keyboards
to
input
Chinese
characters.
But
if
they
use
the
computer
too
much,
they
may
end
up
forgetting
the
exact
strokes(笔画)of
each
Chinese
character
when
writing
on
paper.
Experts
suggest
people,
especially
students,
write
by
hand
more.
Do
you
write
by
hand
more
or
type
more?
In
Beijing,
students
start
using
a
computer
as
early
as
the
primary
school.
And
computer
dependence
is
more
wide?spread
among
university
students.
Almost
all
their
assignments
and
essays
are
typed
on
a
computer.
All
the
students
interviewed
say
they
usually
use
a
computer.
It's
faster
and
easier
to
correct
if
using
a
computer.
And
that's
why
computers
are
being
applied
more
and
more
often
to
modern
education.
But
when
people
are
taking
stock
in
computers
increasingly,
problems
appear.
“When
I'm
writing
with
a
pen,
I
find
I
often
can't
remember
how
to
write
a
character,
though
I
feel
I'm
familiar
with
it.”
“I'm
not
in
the
mood
to
write
when
faced
with
a
pen
and
paper.”
Many
students
don't
feel
this
is
something
to
worry
about.
Now
that
it's
more
convenient
and
efficient
to
write
on
a
computer,
why
bother
to
handwrite?
Many
educators
think
differently.
Shi
Liwei,
the
headmaster
of
a
famous
primary
school
in
the
capital
said,“Chinese
characters
enjoy
both
practical
and
aesthetic(审美的)
value.
But
those
characters
typed
with
computer
keyboards
only
maintain
their
practical
value.
All
the
artistic
beauty
of
the
characters
is
lost.
And
handwriting
contains
the
writer's
emotion.
Through
one's
handwriting,
people
can
get
to
know
one's
thinking
and
personality.
Beautiful
writing
will
give
people
a
better
first
impression
of
them.”
To
encourage
students
to
handwrite
more,
many
primary
schools
in
Beijing
have
made
writing
classes
compulsory(必修的)and
in
universities,
some
professors
are
asking
students
to
turn
in
their
homework
and
essays
written
by
hand.
1.Which
of
the
following
can
be

importance
of

to

C.Writing

D.Practical

B.they
can

the
mistakes
they

not

D.computers

years
ago,he
played
his
first
piece
Moonlight
Sonata(奏鸣曲)by
Beethoven.He

around
him.

of
music
and

piece

so
difficult
that
many
professional
pianists
can't
play
it.Samuel
says
confidently,“It's
all
about
super
memory—I
guess
I
have
that
gift.”
However,Samuel's
ability
to
remember
things
doesn't
stop
with
music.His
family
says
that
even
when
he
was
a
young
boy,Samuel
heard
someone
read
a
story,and
then
he
could
retell
the
story
word
for
word.
Samuel
is
still
only
a
teenager.He
doesn't
know
what
he
wants
to
do
in
the
future.For
now,he
is
just
happy
to
play
beautiful
music
and

his
studies.

A
study
suggests
playing
video
games
that
might
help
dyslexic(诵读困难的)
people
learn
more
quickly.
Vanessa
Harrar
of
Britain's
University
of
Oxford
led
the
study.She
reported
the
findings
in
the
journal
Current
Biology.The
study
suggests
that
dyslexic
people
may
have
trouble
moving
quickly
from
what
they
read
to
what
they
hear.
In
the
study,Doctor
Harrar
tested
17
people
with
dyslexia,and
19
others
without
reading
problems.The
volunteers
were
asked
to
push
a
button
as
quickly
as
possible
when
they
heard
a
sound,saw
a
light
or
experienced
both
together.Doctor
Harrar
compared
the
speed
of
their
reactions.She
found
that
people
with
dyslexia
were
just
as
fast
as
the
others
when
they
saw
only
a
picture
or
heard
only
a
sound.But
the
Dyslexics
had
a
slower
reaction
time
when
they
heard
a
sound
and
saw
a
picture
at
the
same
time,this
may
have
an
effect
on
how
dyslexic
children
are
taught
how
to
read.
Doctor
Harrar
feels
like
playing
video
games
could
help
dyslexic
people
shift
from
seeing
to
hearing
more
quickly.She
adds
that
images
in
video
games
force
the
eyes
to
move
and
focus
quickly.“Video
game
types
of
things
pop
out
of
here
and
there,they
move
your
eyes
around
the
screen
quite
quickly
in
response
to
things
quite
quickly,and
the
more
you
play
a
video
game
the
faster
you
get
that
kind
of
thing.So,the
video
game
is
really
training
the
attention
system
to
move
quickly,”
said
Harrar.When
children
learn
the
alphabet,they
usually
see
the
letter
first
and
then
hear
the
sound,or
they
see
and
hear
the
letter
at
the
same
time.The
study
shows
that
Dyslexics
might
learn
more
quickly
if
they
hear
the
sound
of
a
letter
or
word
first
before
seeing
it.
