Reading
Tips
在阅读时,要注意综合运用略读(skimming)与扫读(scanning)这两种方法。
略读(skimming)只看文章标题、下标题以及每个部分或者段落第一行,关注文章中反复出现的关键词。
略读时,要用充足的时间读懂段落的第一句和第二句,因为第一句往往是该段的主题句(topic
sentence),而第二句往往是对前句的延伸(extension)或进一步的解释(explanation)。
通过略读把握文章大意
运用扫读(scanning)迅速浏览从第三句开始的后面部分,搜寻作者对开头两句的支持句(supporting
sentences),并同时注意文章中间是否有转折词(transition),因为这些词常常会把文章的思路逆转或加入其它重要的信息。当读到段落的最后一句时,我们又要使用略读,这时必须再次放慢速度(slow
down
your
pace)直到完全消化作者对段落的小结(conclusion),因为该小结有可能与主题句截然相反或引导读者进入下一个段落。
通过扫读寻找特定信息或特定词组

He
believed
that
because
he
had
done
no
training,
it
must
have
been
his
spirit

made
him
come
third,
and
so
after
the
bicycle
marathon
he
believed
that
he
could
accomplish
anything
by

Background
People
have
always
been
interested
in
knowing
about
world
records.
They
want
to
know
about
the
biggest,
smallest,
fastest,
slowest,
longest,
shortest,
oldest
and
youngest.
The
first
book
of
this
kind
was
The
Gunnies
Book
of
World
Records.
The
idea
for
this
book
came
from
Hugh
Beaver.
One
day,
after
watching
some
birds,
he
told
his
friends
that
he
thought
those
birds
were
probably
the
fastest
birds
in
Britain.
Several
of
his
friends
disagreed
with
him.
However,
when
they
tried
to
solve
the
problem
by
looking
it
up,
they
found
none
of
the
books
they
had
contained
the
information
that
they
were
looking
for.
As
a
result,
Hugh
Beaver
decided
to
put
out
a
book
that
would
contain
all
kinds
of
world
records.
Hugh
Beaver
began
to
look
for
someone
who
could
help
him
write
the
book.
Soon
he
heard
of
two
brothers
who
had
a
small
fact
agency
in
London.
They
worked
on
finding
and
checking
facts
for
people.
Hugh
Beaver
went
to interview
the
two
brothers
and
found
their
knowledge
amazing.
He
offered
them
jobs
in
his
company.
On
August
27,
1955,
The
Gunnies
Book
of
World
Records
went
on
sale.
In
four
months
it
became
a
best
-seller.

Why
I
Break

Ashrita
with
Sri
Chinmoy
As
a
kid
I
had
a
huge
fascination
with
the
exotic
places
and
people
listed
in
the
Guinness
Book
of
Records,
but
being
a
non-athlete,
I
never
imagined
ever
actually
getting
a
world
record
myself.
Years
later,
as
a
teenager,
I
became
interested
in
Eastern
spirituality
and
began
studying
meditation
with
Sri
Chinmoy.
Suddenly,
I
was
filled
with
an
inner
joy
and
a
seemingly
inexhaustible
energy.
Sri
Chinmoy
also
taught
me
about
his
philosophy
of
self-transcendence,
that
when
you
have
access
to
the
divine
power
we
all
have
within
us,
nothing
is
impossible.
Under
my
teacher’s
guidance,
I
eventually
learned
how
to
incorporate
my
newfound
energy
into
my
spiritual
life
while
pursuing
athletic
goals,
and
I
realized
that
it
was
time
to
fulfill
my
childhood
dream
of
becoming
a
Guinness
record-holder.
In
1979
I
set
my
first
record
by
doing
27,000
jumping
jacks,
and
it
was
such
a
thrill
that
I
immediately
began
training
for
the
next
record
and
I
haven’t
stopped
since!
I
have
also
been
fortunate
enough
to
travel
with
the
group
that
often
accompanies
Sri
Chinmoy
on
his
international
concert
tours
of
music
dedicated
to
world
harmony,
and
I’ve
had
the
opportunity
to
set
records
at
some
of
the
most
magnificent
wonders
of
the

Now

about
a

to
attempting
records?
7.
Why
was
it
amazing

Why
did
Ashrita

he

He
believed
that
because
he
had
done
no
training,
it
must
have
been
his
spirit
that
made
him
come
third,
and
so
after
the

he

that
he
could
accomplish
anything
by

why
not?

he
goes

Subject
The
subject
of
a
sentence
is
the
person,
place,
thing,
or
idea
that
is
doing
or
being
something.
1.
What
is
Subject?
You
can
find
the
subject
of
a
sentence
if
you
can
find
the
verb.
Ask
the
question,
“Who
or
what
‘verbs’
or
‘verbed’?”
and
the
answer
to
that
question
is
the
subject.
Noun,
adjective,
nonfinite
verb,
it,
nominative
personal
pronoun
and
the
subject
clause
and
so
on.
2.
What
can
be
used
as
Subject?
A
tree
has
fallen
across
the
street.
The
ambulance
is
arriving.
名词、代词、数词、不定式、动词的
ing形式、从句等可作句子的主语。
1.
名词作主语
You
are
a
middle
school
student.
He
lent
me
his
new
bike.
Three
is
enough.
Two
from
five
leave
three.
2.
代词作主语
3.
数词作主语
To
find
the
truth
is
very
difficult.
It’s
is
very
difficult
to
find
the
truth.
Smoking
is
bad
for
your
health.
Seeing
is
believing.
4.
不定式作主语
5.
动名词作主语
A
动名词与不定式都可在句子中作主语。动名词作主语时一般来说指的是一个概念或一个既成事实。如:
Teaching
English
is
my
job.
Teaching
English
是一个概念名词,而不是一个动作。
B
当一个不定式短语作主语时,我们常用It作形式主语,而把真正的主语——动词不定式放到句子后边。
这样的句型还用在It’s…for
sb.
to
do…It’s…of
sb.
to
do…中。如果It’s后边的形容词与人的天资、秉性有关时,必须用It’s…of
sb.
to
do…;这类形容词包括
good,
bad,
clever,
stupid,
wise,
foolish,
cruel,
mean
等。如果It’s后边的形容词与人的天资、秉性无关时,则要用It’s…
for
sb.
to
do…。
The
rich
should
help
the
poor.
Old
and
young
walked
side
by
side.
The
disabled
are
being
carefully
taken
care
of.
6.
名词化的形容词作主语
7.
名词化的过去分词作主语
Whenever
you
come
will
be
fine.
8.
从句作主语
作主语的从句称为主语从句,
可由that,whether,wh-词等引导。
Between
six
and
seven
in
the
morning
is
the
time
I
go
jogging.
Nearby
is
a
good
place
for
camping.
9.
有时介词短语、副词或其短语
位于主语位置是倒装结构
(1)
It
is
+
形容词(possible,
clear,
true,
necessary,
likely
,
nice
等)
+
that
(2)
It
is
+
名词
(a
pity
,
no
use
,
a
fact,
no
wonder
等)+
that
用
it
作形式主语的句型有:
(3)
It
+
不及物动词(follows,
happens,
turns
out,
goes
without
saying)+
that
(4)
It
is
+
过去分词(thought,
known,
mentioned,
said,
expected,
suggested,
may
be
safely
said,
must
be
admitted,
has
been
decided
)+
that
在以上句型中It是形式主语,
真正的主语是that引导的从句。在这样的主语从句中that不能省略,
就其本质讲,用That…is
well-known;
That…is
said也是可以的。但是经过长期使用,
上述句型已经被固定下来。
What
he
had
already
forgotten
about
computer
repair
could
fill
whole
volumes.
3.
A
simple
subject
can
be
more
than
one
word,
even
an
entire
clause.
4.
In
English,
the
subject
of
a
command,
order,
or
suggestion
-
you,
the
person
being
directed
is
usually
left
out
of
the
sentence
and
is
said
to
be
the
understood
subject.
e.g.
1.
You
step
lively
there,
or
I’ll
leave
you
behind.
2.
Before
assembling
the
swing
set,
you
read
these
instructions
carefully.
5.
For
purposes
of
sentence
analysis,
the
doer
or
the
initiator
of
action
in
a
sentence
is
referred
to
as
the
agent
of
the
sentence.
In
an
active
sentence,
the
subject
is
the
agent.
e.g.
1.
The
Johnsons
added
a
double
garage
to
their
house.
2.
The
jury
returned
a
verdict
of
manslaughter.
6.
In
a
passive
sentence,
the
agent
is
not
the
subject.
In
fact,
sometimes
a
passive
sentence
will
not
contain
an
agent.
e.g.
1.
The
dean’s
report
was
reviewed
by
the
faculty
senate.
2.
Three
cities
in
the
country’s
interior
were
bombed.
A.I
thank
you.
B.I
never
heard
of
it.
C.It
looks
like
it.
D.It
sounds
like
common
sense
to
me.
E.It
serves
him
right.
7.
In
familiar
speech,
the
subject
is
sometimes
left
out
when
it
is
a
pronoun.
We
call
it
omission
of
the
subject.
In
spoken
English
we
often
hear
sentences
like
this:
A.Thank
you.
B.Never
heard
of
it.
C.Looks
like
it.
D.Sounds
like
common
sense
to
me.
E.Serves
him
right.
Underline
the
subject
in
these
sentences.

whether
you
agree
with
the
ideas
in
the
sentences
or
not.

A:

No,
it
wasn't

C:
Why
did
you

A:
I
know
it
seems
strange

I
wanted
to
do
something
different
to
the
usual
kinds
of
events.
B:
Well,
it

certainly
that!

I
stopped
!
B:
Yes,
I'm
sure
you
did.
How
did
you
prepare
yourself
mentally
for
the
event?
A:
When
I
was
training
and
felt
like
I
couldn't
go
on,
I
would
just
keep
telling
myself
I
could
do

A:
Oh
yes,
I
had
some
friends,
my
family
and
a
few
colleagues
from
work.
That
was
really
important.
B:
Oh
yes?
Why

Subjects.
Subject
The
subject
of
a
sentence
is
the
person,
place,
thing,
or
idea
that
is
doing
or
being
something.
1.
What
is
Subject?
You
can
find
the
subject
of
a
sentence
if
you
can
find
the
verb.
Ask
the
question,
“Who
or
what
‘verbs’
or
‘verbed’?”
and
the
answer
to
that
question
is
the
subject.
For
instance,
in
the
sentence
"The
computers
in
the
Learning
Center
must
be
replaced,"
the
verb
is
"must
be
replaced."
What
must
be
replaced?
The
computers.
So
the
subject
is
"computers."
Noun,
adjective,
non-finite
verb
(动词不定式
Infinitive、动名词
Gerund、分词
Participle),
it,
nominative
personal
pronoun
and
the
subject
clause
and
so
on.
2.
What
can
be
used
as
Subject?
A
tree
has
fallen
across
the
street.
The
ambulance
is
arriving.
名词、代词、数词、不定式、动词的
ing形式、从句等可作句子的主语。
1.
名词作主语
You
are
a
middle
school
student.
He
lent
me
his
new
bike.
Three
is
enough.
Two
and
two
makes
four.
2.
代词作主语
3.
数词作主语
To
find
the
truth
is
very
difficult.
It’s
is
very
difficult
to
find
the
truth.
Smoking
is
bad
for
your
health.
Seeing
is
believing.
4.
不定式作主语
5.
动名词作主语
A.
动名词与不定式都可在句子中作主语。动名词作主语时一般来说指的是一个概念或一个既成事实。如:
Teaching
English
is
my
job.
Teaching
English
是一个概念名词,而不是一个动作。
B.
当一个不定式短语作主语时,我们常用It作形式主语,而把真正的主语——动词不定式放到句子后边。
这样的句型还用在It’s
…
for
sb.
to
do
…
It’s
…
of
sb.
to
do
…中。如果It’s后边的形容词与人的天资、秉性有关时,必须用It’s
…
of
sb.
to
do
…;这类形容词包括
good,
bad,
clever,
stupid,
wise,
foolish,
cruel,
mean等。如果It’s后边的形容词与人的天资、秉性无关时,则要用It’s
…
for
sb.
to
do
…。
The
rich
should
help
the
poor.
Old
and
young
walked
side
by
side.
The
disabled
are
being
carefully
taken
care
of.
6.
名词化的形容词作主语
7.
名词化的过去分词作主语
Whenever
you
come
will
be
fine.
8.
从句作主语
作主语的从句称为主语从句,可由that,whether,wh-
等词引导。
Between
six
and
seven
in
the
morning
is
the
time
I
go
jogging.
Nearby
is
a
good
place
for
camping.
9.
有时介词短语、副词或其短语
位于主语位置是倒装结构
(1)
It
is
+
形容词
(possible,
clear,
true,
necessary,
likely,
nice
等)
+
that
(2)
It
is
+
名词
(a
pity,
no
use,
a
fact,
no
wonder
等)
+
that
用
it
作形式主语的句型有:
(3)
It
+
不及物动词
(follows,
happens,
turns
out,
goes
without
saying)
+
that
(4)
It
is
+
过去分词
(thought,
known,
mentioned,
said,
expected,
suggested,
may
be
safely
said,
must
be
admitted,
has
been
decided)
+
that
在以上句型中It是形式主语,真正的主语是that引导的从句。在这样的主语从句中that不能省略,就其本质讲,用That
…
is
well-known;
That
…
is
said也是可以的。但是经过长期使用,上述句型已经被固定下来。

3.
A
simple
subject
can

4.
In
English,
the
subject
of
a
command,
order,
or
suggestion
—
you,
the
person
being
directed
—
is
usually
left
out
of
the
sentence
and
is
said
to
be
the
understood
subject.
e.g.
1.

Step

or

leave

2.

C.
It
looks
like

D.
It
sounds
like

familiar
speech,
the
subject
is
sometimes
left
out
when
it
is
a
pronoun.
We
call
it
omission
of
the
subject.
In
spoken
English
we
often
hear
sentences
like
this:
A.

you.
B.

Background
People
have
always
been
interested
in
knowing
about
world
records.
They
want
to
know
about
the
biggest,
smallest,
fastest,
slowest,
longest,
shortest,
oldest
and
youngest.
The
first
book
of
this
kind
was
The
Guinness
Book
of
World
Records.
The
idea
for
this
book
came
from
Hugh
Beaver.
One
day,
after
watching
some
birds,
he
told
his
friends
that
he
thought
those
birds
were
probably
the
fastest
birds
in
Britain.
Several
of
his
friends
disagreed
with
him.
However,
when
they
tried
to
solve
the
problem
by
looking
it
up,
they
found
none
of
the
books
they
had
contained
the
information
that
they
were
looking
for.
As
a
result,
Hugh
Beaver
decided
to
put
out
a
book
that
would
contain
all
kinds
of
world
records.
Hugh
Beaver
began
to
look
for
someone
who
could
help
him
write
the
book.
Soon
he
heard
of
two
brothers
who
had
a
small
fact
agency
in
London.
They
worked
on
finding
and
checking
facts
for
people.
Hugh
Beaver
went
to interview
the
two
brothers
and
found
their
knowledge
amazing.
He
offered
them
jobs
in
his
company.
On
August
27,
1955,
The
Guinness
Book
of

went
on

What
are
the
four
reasons
why
Luke

Josh
want
their
school
to

the
record.
1
What
record
is
their
school
going
to
try
to
break?
2
What
gave
Luke
and
Josh
the
idea
to
break
a
Guinness
record?
The
most
bodies
painted
at
the
same
time.
They
were
looking
at
the
records
set
by
groups
of
people
in
a
book
of
Guinness
World
Records.
3
Why
won’t
the
record
be
as
easy
to
break
as
Luke
and
Josh
first
thought?
They
can’t
paint
just
one
symble
on
each
body.
Everyone
has
to
be
painted
from
head
to
toe
with
a
design
approved
by
the
Guinnesss
organisation.

5
Who

It
needed
another
two

them.
6
What
are
the
four
reasons
why
Luke
and
Josh
want
their
school
to
try
to
break
the
record.
It
would
be
great
fun.
2)
It
would
create
a
bit
of
school
spirit.
3)
It
would
bring
people
in
the
local
community
together.
4)
When
they
are
old,
they’ll
be
able
to
tell
their
grandchildren
what
they
did.
