This was the call that announced there
was about to be a whale hunt.
“that announced there was about to be a
about to do sth.”
①“be going to+动词原形”,be going to
Look! It’s going to rain.
There is going to be a parents’ meeting
tomorrow.
What time shall we go there tomorrow
I will / shall go to visit her next week.
如: come,go,
arrive,leave,move,fly等。
例如:Mr. Brown is leaving for Beijing
tomorrow.
I won’t leave here until you come back.
⑤“be about to+动词原形”意为“正要做某
They are to come to Guangzhou in
November.
Are you free tomorrow
2. I had already heard that George didn’t
like being kept waiting, so even though I
didn’t have the right clothes on, I raced
after him.
a. Even though I have to walk all the way,
I will get there.
b. I can still remember, even though it
was so long ago.
“even if”。 连词as though=as if意为“好
He behaved as though / as if

human friends.
In groups, describe the relationship between Old Tom and the whalers. What other animals help out humans in hunting
Group work
Old Tom had a strong relationship with the whalers. There was obviously a great deal of understanding and cooperation between them.
There are many other animals that help out humans in hunting such as dogs, cormorants(鸬鹚), otters(水獭) and ferrets(雪貂). In the past, raptors(肉食动物) were used to hunt rabbits, and cheetahs(猎豹) were used to hunt wild animals.
The last whaling station in Australia closed
in 1978. Whales are now an endangered
species and protected by an international
ban, but some countries oppose the ban.
In groups discuss the reasons for and
against banning whaling.

A Killer Whale
Whales are huge, intelligent sea
mammals. They breathe air through
blow-holes into lungs (unlike fish who
breathe using gills). Whales have
smooth, shiny, streamlined (流线型)
bodies that move easily through the
water.
What is a whale
There are two types of whales alive today:
toothed whales (齿鲸类) and baleen whales
Toothed whales have teeth and a
single blowhole. They feed on eat fish and
other sea mammals. Baleen whales are
larger than toothed whales. They are filter
feeders (滤食者) that use baleen to sieve
(过滤) food, and have two blowholes.
Classification of whales
Killer whales (虎鲸) belong to toothed whales, who are the largest of the dolphins and king of the sea, biggest carnivore(食肉动物) of the sea, killing all kinds of animals in the sea, even the huge blue whale, like tigers on land, working in a team.
Average lifespan: 50 to 80 years
Size: 7 to 9.7 m
Weight: up to 6 tons
Killer whales
Baleen whales are characterized by having baleen plates for filtering food from water, rather than having teeth. Baleen whales are generally larger than toothed whales, and females are larger than males. This group includes the largest known animal species, the Blue Whale.
