Teaching aims :
1 To improve the student s reading ability .
2 To read about athletes 。doping and gene-therapy.
3 To revise conditionals .

1 How to train the student s reading ability.
2 To learn the reading strategy
3 To use the main new words and expressions.
The difficult teaching points:
1 The using of the new words and expressions
2 The conditionals .
Teaching tools :the casstte,a small blackboard.
Teaching steps
Step 1:Pre-reading
Before they start,tell themto discuss in groups about the question
1 What champion athletes can you name
2 What were their achievemnets
Encourage them to say anyone they know .
For example :Michale Johnson,hold the world 400m world record ……
LiuXing broke the record of 110m world record ……..
Step 2 While- reading
1 Ask them to read the text quickly ,then work in pairs ,Try to get the general idea of the text .
2 Get the students to read the four options and decide which best describe the general idea ,Were any of their ideas similar
3 Teacher may help the students to decide .
4 Check the answers.
5 Careful reading, geive them limited time to read the text and answer the following questions .
1)Why would the athletes today have broken records if they had taken part in the first Olympic Games
2)What reasons are given for improved performance
3)What is doping and why is it illegal
4)How did the drugs affect world records in the 1980s
5)Why are drugs test at sporting events often one step behind
6)What would the effect of genetherahy be on sport
7) What is the Olympic spirit
Then ask some students to share their answers with class.
Check the answer with whole class.
Step 3 Post –reading
1,The difficult sentences
1) Many contemporary amateur would have broken world records if they had taken part in the first Olympic Games
(该句是于过去事实相反的虚拟语气,主句用 woule have done ,if 条件句用had done )
2) If a generationof sports stars with enhanced genes were created,it would contradict the whole spirit of sport

Ask the students to discuss about the meaning and use of the expressions.

Encourage the students to make sentences with the phrases,if they can not make the sentences ,The teacher may help them ,or they can imitate the sentences of the text.
