Lesson 3 Epidemic Explained
The teaching aims :
To practise reading strategies for sequencing of information.
To practise using the vocabuary of illness.
To learn to use synonyms.
The important teaching points :
To improve reading ability
To practise reading skills

How to improve reading ability
How to use the synonyms correctly.
Teaching tools :cassette,small blackboard.
Teaching steps: five steps
Step 1 Revision
Ask the students to revise the main points of the last lesson,after three minutes, teacher can ask questionsabout the main words and expressions.
Eg:put off ,get down ,get out of ,go over ,find out ,go through ,bring up ……
Step2 ,Pre-reading
show the following words on the blackboard
AIDS, cancer, headache,flu ,heart disease,stomachache
Ask : Which of these can be epidemic
2 Tell them to discuss in pairs ,Encourage studentsto share the information with each other.
3 Then collect their answers. Choose some of the points to show the class.
4 Do Ex2.,check their answers ,Teacher can give more information about the epidemics to the class.
Step 3 ,While-reading
Read the text quickly ,and match the five paragraphs A –F with gaps 3,5,8,10 and 12 in the text.
Check the answers ,if they can not find the answer ,Teacher may help them to finish the task by giving the key words .
Read the text again ,and try to complete these sentences about the text in your own words .

An epidemic may have been one of the key causes of the fall of the Roman Empire …
The Black Death spread rapidly in Asia and Europe because…
SARS spread from Hong Kong to Canada, Vietnam and Singpore because…
Many doctors and nurses became ill with SARS because …
Ask them to do first ,then ask them to form groups of three or four and take turns to read out their sentences to the rest of the group and see if any of the sentences are the same.
Have one or two students read out their sentences for each item for the class to hear.
Check the answers with whole class.
